So I recently moved to a new place. Prior to moving, Emby for android worked perfectly, no playback issues. But now, at my new place, Emby on my android devices and google tv stutters and lags as if it were buffering the stream. Video plays for a few seconds and then stops to buffer anywhere from 5 to 30 seconds. this cycle will repeat indefinitely making watching anything virtually impossible. Does anyone know why this would be happening? When I moved, I kept my same internet provider, same network. When I play Emby on the host PC, it plays fine, no stutter. It's only when I try to play it on through the Android app or chromecast that it stutters. Any help is appreciated!

So I have a Emby Premiere subscription, which in theory should allow me to stream between my TV and on my phone and so on. I'm running my server on my main gaming PC, which is a high spec AMD config. My files are all stored on my B3 Excito server running debian. In theory there should be no issue in video playback, especially since my internet is a fiber connection here in Sweden with 250MB/s down and 250MB/s up. Even though all of the things listed above, sometimes my video playback doesn't play at all, lags or freezes. I read that subtitles may be the issue, it's not something I have encountered as being an issue but idk. Furthermore, my iPhone doesn't seem to be able to reach Emby when I'm outside - even though it could before - and Emby Connect has never worked for me. Would be very thankful for any help on the matter so I can solve these issues once and for all. Could different video formats slow down the playback? I know MKV formats are challenging for some video playback softwares for example.

Emby Server Lags out with 90-95% cpu usage but uses only 20-30% of Ram
ifti12 posted a topic in Linux
Our server is an Apollo server where HW's are Intel XEON E5-2620 32 core processor 128GB Ram 150TB of Raid 5 Storage. 16gigs swap mem 10gbps throughput Os is running on Latest version of Linux and Emby version is 4.7.10.0 The main issue occurs at the peak hour when 20-30 starts streaming at the same time. Transcoding is enabled on our server but the contents are maintained so that the transcoding is minimal. This last 30 day's data on PlayMethod But at peak time CPU usage racks up to 90-95% where ram is used for only around 20% of the whole lot. This is causing serious lagging even with just loading the front page. I know transcoding consumes a lot of reso urces but wasn't this build is relatively okay for handling this much of data? What should we do? Here is the log file. embyserver.txt Should we add a GPU? What is the root issue here? Thank you. embyserver.txt- 3 replies

Hi there, I've set up my old PC as a standalone server running Emby, along with Windows AD, DHCP and DNS Services. Specs are an i5-7400, 16GB of DDR4 RAM, 120GB SATA boot drive, and a Storage Space with 2x4TB HDDs and a 500GB NVMe SSD for cache. I've mostly been using the server for streaming my music collection (which I'm still building on!) However, I've been trying streaming films/TV Shows from my server, and I've started to have a few problems. The issues I've been having mainly relate to my LG Smart TV (43UN8100), but also my Xbox One S. When I stream video on the Smart TV, it usually stutters and results in me not being able to comfortably watch the video. This seems to happen regardless of the resolution of the video/whether I'm direct-playing or transcoding. When I'm playing the videos on the Xbox, they start off playing fine, but then the Xbox will start dropping frames like a madman while still playing the audio. This has been tested using the Emby Theater apps and the native DLNA apps on both the Xbox and the LG TV. This perplexes me as the videos play fine on my Windows 11 PC, my Samsung Tab S7+, and also on my Note20 Ultra (I've even tested this over 5G and it plays fine). With regards to my network setup, the LG TV, Windows 11 PC and the Xbox are connected via Ethernet. My Note20 and Tab S7 are both on Wi-Fi or 5G. It seems like the issue could be device-related, but I'm unable to work out where the issue would lie. I've also taken a look at my Task Manager on the server while streaming, and the server doesn't seem to be overloaded or stressed at all. I've noticed that the network speed on the NIC fluctuates while streaming, but I'd assume this is normal? The videos themselves are encoded as H.264 with the highest bitrate being 44Mbps. Some of the videos are 1080p/30fps, others are 4K/24fps. I genuinely can't figure out what I'm doing wrong here, so I'm hoping someone can set me on the right path. Thank you! embyserver.txt

Disk Activity/Latency when running Emby in a VM on Hyper-V
RedBaron164 posted a topic in General/Windows
I've been running Emby in a VM on Hyper-V for a couple of years now. Recently I've been trying to resolve some disk activity/latency issues that have been causing delays while loading and moving around in Emby from various clients. I think I've finally found my solution and wanted to share what I learned on the off chance it might help someone else. Long story short, move the cache/metadata/transcode-temp directory to a separate virtual hard disk (vhd). I noticed that when an Emby client would take a long time to load or start to timeout, disk activity on the server would jump noticeably. I also found that running the disk cleanup task would cause the same kind of usage. While monitoring the disk performance in task manager and resource monitor I would see that disk activity would max out, the disk queue length would be around .90 - 1.5 and average response time for the disk would hit 500ms. All this even though the disk throughput was only being reported at about 500kbps. I had two vhdx's on the VM, a Fixed size Disk for C: and another Fixed size disk for D: which is where shows are recorded. The first thing I did to try and improve the situation was reconfigure my Hyper-V's host storage as a Raid 10 array instead of Raid 5. This helped a little but not significantly and the issues were still present. I kept monitoring disk usage and noticed that the cache directory was being accessed rather frequently so I decided to move the Emby cache to a different disk. I added a third 10gb Fixed size disk and changed the cache path. This helped a little but I would still see performance issues when the Library.db was being accessed heavily. After looking into if I could move the Library.db to a different directory (and finding out it would be rather difficult) I noticed that the Metadata directory would show up frequently so I decided to move that instead. I moved the metadata location to the same drive as the cache and after refreshing the metadata in my libraries I finally noticed a significant improvement in performance. I also decided to move the transcoding-temp directory to the third drive as well just to cover all my bases. I originally did not think that moving the cache/metadata directories to a different virtual disk would make a difference since all the VHD's were on the same physical volume. But doing just that appears to have resolved my issue and now I regret not doing it sooner, I've been running performance tests since making the changes and so far I have not been able to re-produce my original performance issues with a variety of different clients including FireTV/Web/Theater. My Emby clients are much more responsive and not having to sit around and wait while browsing my music library is refreshing. And if I never see that VolleyError timeout message again I'll be very happy. I'm going to keep a close eye on my disk utilization and performance for the next few days but wanted to share what I was experiencing and what I did in case anyone else runs into the same issue. Also, on a side note, I did try enabling Quality of Service Management on the Virtual Disks but it ended up making the situation worse. I'm also not sure if this solution applies to only Hyper-V or also VMware. I'm not running VMware ESXi at home so I can't say for certain. But if you are running Emby in VMware and are having a similar issue then maybe this will help you as well.- 21 replies

When playing a video on my iPhone with lots of and/or heavily stylized subtitles, the video + subtitles would lag for a while (but audio still plays). This occurs even when I download the episode. The video runs perfectly fine through VLC (via UPnP) or when I disable the subtitles in Emby. Is there any way to fix this? I've attached an example video + server logs (no ffmpeg) embyserver.txt 04:48:35.777 Extra Info: IPhone SE 2nd Gen iOS 14.6 Emby App 2.0.8 Emby Server 4.6.4.0 slow_subtitles.mp4

I had been running Emby on Windows Server 2016 for some time and watching movies and TV shows on my Mi Box S (MiBox4) Android box on Kodi with Emby plugin without any problem. Last week I migrated my PC to Windows 10 Pro and reinstalled Emby server on it, also did a fresh install of Kodi on my Android box to re-sync everything. Since then, it's been a debugging nightmare for me as no matter what video, large and small, high bit-rate and crap sd, video playback stops randomly every few minutes! First I thought that it might be my router configs (It's a 2.4GHz running at 40MHz wide channel 150Mbps N)... I kept playing with the configs, replaced DD-WRT with OpenWRT, then with the original D-Link firmware, then back to the latest version of DD-WRT; no matter what I did the videos kept stopping. Then I started messing with Kodi on Android's advancedsettings.xml's cache/buffer values, I even installed Emby's Android app, still the same, video drops randomly, sometimes with the "source too slow" message. I then came to my PC, changed the Realtek NIC's configs, Windows registry values, Firewall settings, routes, even reinstalled and reconfigured Emby numerous times, it even got worse! Now I come to thee completely exhausted and out of ideas, looking for help... Any ideas? Here's the most usual error on Emby's logs: 2020-07-20 10:20:55.583 Info HttpServer: HTTP Response 206 to 192.168.0.155. Stopped at 713000 ms I bet it's some kind of f*-up on Microsoft's side as I did not have ANY problem with the same PC, Router, and Box on Windows Server 2016 even with playing very-high-bitrate 30GB 1080p 4-hour movies! If it needs mentioning, there's no problem playing videos on Emby server localhost.

Hello! I use a raspberry pi 4 2gb as my server. I have a little issue with it now. The higher bit rate movies (1080p, 18000+) freeze/stop in fix points. In the TV app (LG tv, its my main client) its just 1-2 sec freeze than play, than freeze again. On chrome browser, it completely stop and I can't resume playing. I tried to change some path (cache, transcode temporary files, metadata etc) but it changed nothing. On the tv it has direct play, with chrome it use direct streaming. In chrome I see the playback position and the transcode position. I thought the transcode not fast enough, but its not the case. Doesn't matter how long I wait to transcode and how long the transcode position increase, it stop the exact same moment, all the time. I didn't see any suspicious on the log files, but maybe I just didn't see something. I attached 3 log file. 1 and 2 is the same movie, 2 try. The 3rd is another movie. In the 3rd I fast forward where its free because it start freezing on the 7-9 min. All log file from chrome play, because I don't know how to attach tv play log. So if anyone could help, it would be great. I don't know what is the problem. It can be the movie file, the server, some settings the problem. Or maybe the pi not powerful enough. p.s.: Sorry for my English, its not my mother tongue. emby log.txt emby log 2.txt emby log 3.txt

I recently put together my first NAS . Took a bit of time and effort but the server is on it and running. I can play local movies just fine but my friend in another state is experiencing stuttering every other second and is unwatchable. All settings are default. I have 1000 up and down and my friend has 300+ down. Not sure quite what is wrong as I am new to this. Maybe something to do with bitrate and transcoding?

Hi, I have my Emby Server (4.3.0.30) set up on a QNAP TS431P and am accessing it via the Emby WebApp (Chrome). I have noticed that some of my H265 content is acting up and lagging. As far as I can tell this has to do with Chrome not supporting the codec. Playing the file via Edge seems to work better but there is still considerable lag. Playing the file on my AppleTV (through Emby) as well as using VLC to play directly from the server (with Windows) both works without any issues or lag. I am assuming that's when the local hardware kicks in as compared to my NAS and/or Chrome restrictions. Is that assumption correct? So I am thinking about getting a Premiere subscription in order to get the Emby desktop applications, assuming that this will my laptop do the "heavy" lifting. Can I expect that this would resolve my issues of having laggy HEVC playback? Please let me know if you need any other information - looking forward to your feedback!

Hi all, Let me start off by saying I am glad to be done with Plex and Emby feels MUCH more consistent if not a little quirky so I bought a lifetime preimer pass, love it. So I'm stoked to be using emby. I started using emby in a VM but noticed my disk ops were bottle-necking emby so I installed Emby on a dedicated machine with the following specs: Intel Core i7-4770K 16GB DDR3 Ram Drives: OS Drive 128GB SSD, DVR Drive 1TB 7200RPM HDD, Media Drive 3TB 7200RPM NAS HDD Operating System: Window 10 Pro Build 1909 Patched all the way up HD Home Run PRIME TV Tuner while up front everything will be on 1 3TB disk I will be going out later today to buy 2 more 3TB Disks so that each library can live on their own disk. My Questions concerns are these: Why is there a considerable lag when loading titles? It takes about 12 seconds for a movie to start playing after I choose play.Full disclosure I'm still copying over media to this server but I don't think that should be an issue. There are gaps in guide. I can see all the channels my HD Home Run is reporting but some channels have no guide info but will stream. I have read on the sub that putting in a 10-series GPU helps? Can anyone explain this or let me know where I can go to read more about this / enable? The android app doesnt seem to be working great. It always gives me the option to sign into connect even though I'm pretty sure I've already done that, It's laggy and I'm not sure if that's my server or the app, other issues I'm not able to articulate quite yet. does the community have any thoughts on my setup and how I can solve the 4 issues above? Thanks!

Server: 6HDs, FX6300, 4GB RAM, Win 10, Emby Server Version 3.2.60.0, disabled active monitoring and disabled subtitle extract. Transcoding between Emby Server and FFMPEGX take 100% of all 6 CPU threads and about 80% of RAM. Client: Apple TV 4K, Auto quality playback, On 1080p video files, its 30-60 seconds from clicking "play" on a video before it actually begins playback. I'm relatively new to Emby, so I'm not sure how to approach it. On the same machine in Plex, it would be near instantaneous. See logs. edit: oops, forgot to mention. Only has the integrated GPU and I do not believe I enabled any HW encoding/decoding. ffmpeg-transcode-edbdca80-791a-40c9-8bb9-3d78519747e2.txt server-63650233373.txt

I have just moved across from Plex to Emby on my Unraid server as I prefer the interface. One of the key features for me with Plex was sync'ing and downloading a copy of a TV show onto my device to watch whilst on the move. I encoded and syncronized 3 episodes of a TV show yesterday to watch on my journey to work. However, every episode was terrible. Stuttering and Video frame dropouts making the video impossible to watch. All three episodes were the same. I couldn't find where the files were stored so could not test with another player. If this is not resolvable I will have to dump my subscription and move back to Plex as this is a key feature for me. I have searched the forums and although there are similar cases raised in the past, I have found no potential resolution to the issue. The device I am sync'ing to is Google pIxel 2 XL. Plenty of horse power. thanks in advance, Gary

Hey guys, just wondering if anyone's experiencing laggy/choppy emby theater desktop user interface? i've had this issue since day dot of the new theater, across multiple PC's, multiple TV's, and still unable to pinpoint it. Both boxes I've tried it on have been dedicated HTPC's, with nothing but NVidia drivers, emby server, emby theatre, windows 10 and windows 10 with CU, mpchc, lav, madvr. The current hardware it's running on is asus maximus ix rog mobo, i7-7700K, 16gbddr4-3200mhz, m.2 intel ssd, and gtx 1070, displayed on a Samsung KS9000 tv. Surely this hardware is capable of running the UI smoothly? I've also tried changing the increasing the priority on the electron and emby.theatre processes in taskmanager, running as administrator, adjusting NVidia driver settings to run exe's with different quality/performance settings, etc. I've tried reinstalling NVidia drivers, and re-installing emby theatre. I've noticed the emby theatre UI doesn't load up true full screen no matter what, but instead as a full screen sized window. I found in older versions I was able to shrink to a smaller window, and then re-maximize which would go proper full screen, and I'd get slightly better UI performance, but no dice this time around. Has no effect at all. I'll get a few good seconds of buttery smooth UI transitions, and then jitter city like I've gone back into 23hz. What I've just thought of now but haven't tested is wiping out all artwork, and getting it to re-download it all to a single location (cache area of emby theater on the ssd).. if that's possible.. instead of the media folders.. or does emby server grab the artworks from the local media folders and cache them anyway? accessing it from there? another thing to note: emby server is pointing to local drives, ie: G:\Storage\, as opposed to network location \\MEDIA-PC\Storage, as Emby Theater is also running on the same box as the server app. anyone experienced it or know anything else I can try? Cheers

Hey there, I was just wondering if you guys can suggest any settings, tweaks, hacks, plugins, etc. for pushing the overall streaming performance when multiple users stream media. When I start a 1080p mkv movie ( in this case with dts) which triggers transcoding at 10 mbps the movie runs like it should... but as soon as another user starts streaming a movie like this, it sadly turns into a wallpaper-picture-show. While the overall performance of my server should be more then enough (100+mbit bandwidth, 2 cores, 32gb ram) there seems to be a pretty tight performance bottleneck somewhere and I hope you guys can help me fix that. My goal is to be able to stream for up to 5 users (from different sources like browser, fire stick, apple tv, and so on) at the same time without any lags. what do I need to know and understand here? how to manage this? how/what to tweak? what topics should I look deeper into? Any input on this topic is greatly appreceated for I am new to this software. Thanks in advance Soki

Converting all of my devices over to Emby as I would like to support the community and I enjoy the interface. Unfortunately the Tizen version of the application is (for my model at least) unusable to say the least. My media collection is large (Nearly 2k movies, mostly HD) which I know plays a part in the issue ~ I hate to mention Plex, but it handled this collection with no issue whatsoever. I don't have the option to sort by release date like I do on the Android version of the Software I'm able to navigate through TV shows, and other smaller collections however it's extremely slow and falls behind when clicking the navigation buttons. After enough scrolling it completely times out and causes the TV to stop responding and requires a full shut down. If I'm able to provide any further information to help resolve these issues I'd be glad to.

I hope this is the right place to put this topic in, I haven't posted before and it felt like the most relevant place. I use Emby regularly, and I primarily watch subbed anime. And as with any tv/movie style there will sometimes be multiple things conveyed on screen. So the problem is that whenever there is a large amount of subtitles on screen (Large being above the average single line) the web app will freeze up. So when a sign with multiple slanted lines of text shows up the app freezes on that frame without showing the subtitles and the audio continues without me being able to pause it. Another example from today: The episode ends and the ending theme plays, with one line horizontally in English and one vertically in Japanese. The video plays but the subs freeze and the controls don't show up when I move the mouse or click. On a related note; is split OP/ED+EP, which is common for blu-ray anime releases, in planning at all? Please excuse if my English is wrong anywhere.

I am having trouble streaming shows from my media storage to my players. I have a FireStick which appears to stream the TV shows fine, but can not handle any of the movies I have downloaded. It pauses frequently to let them buffer. I also have a WD TV Live that can find the EMBY server but then reports an error that it cannot play the file type of the movie when accessed as a mediaserver. If I connect it as a windows share, it will play the files but again there is a lot of lag and buffering. Still new to this whole setup. Let me know if there is more information that you need.

Hello @all, I have an Upload speed of 6mbps but Emby only uses 4mbps no matter what transcoding and playback settings I choose. So, I tried a lot, including VPN access to the LAN, prioritisation of process and traffic but nothing worked so far. The google chrome browser is the culprit, it uses only half of the available bandwith of the media browser server! When using firefox it uses the whole bandwidth and so I have no annoying stuttering anymore. Anyone here who had the same problem? Thanks @EmbyTeam - You are the best!

Hi guys, As another long time MB user who just recently upgraded to MB3 and MBC, I find I have a disappointing problem. My PC is more than powerful enough to run MBC just fine, but when I run it through my XBox 360 extender on a wired connection (not wifi) the interface slows down (lags) so much that it is unuseable. This happens with the 4 themes I have: Classic, Subdued, Chocolate and Xenon. I don't have any other plugins installed. The only solution I have found so far is to turn off all backdrops, everywhere. This makes it useable, but still slow. On my PC, there is no problem using backdrops. All of my files play just fine, with no lagging or stuttering, both on thed PC and the extender. It's only the interface that is laggy over the extender. BTW, all my artwork is from metadata, not custom stuff. MB2 ran all of this just fine. I hope there's a solution to this problem, because it seems a shame to have the possibility of a beautiful interface with lots of nice artwork, but be required to shut it off to make it useable. I'm not a programmer, but it seems illogical to me that MBC can stream HD video files to my extender correctly, but lags when it has to handle a bunch of 0.5 MB jpg files. Can this have anything to do with the fact that I enabled chapters for all my files? I can't post the log file because it's too big (36 MB, is that normal?). Any help would be appreicated. Keith

Poor Performance due to scanning media set to be ignored
Andrew@Brisbane posted a topic in General/Windows
Just upgraded from MB2 about four days ago. My wife complained to me that video was randomly becoming laggy and stuttering for short periods. I noticed it myself and had a look. Looks to me like whenever the library scan kicks in the performance drops way down. I noticed that everytime a scan occurs it starts hitting the internet for metadata, but MBS appears to ignore the [dontfetchmeta] tag and everytime a scan occurs it requests metadata for the same stuff it failed to find last time it ran. Runs for about 5-10 minutes and then performance picks back up. I disabled getting metadata from the internet and this solved the problem, but makes me sad. :-( Currently running MBC and MBS on same machine.
