Hi! Maybe anyone faced the same or similar issue and can show me the direction to solve it. I faced the issue that Emby can't decode H265 (HEVC) on my hardware that suppose to do it. My hardware: Intel NUC 5I5RYH (Intel Core i5 5250U, Intel HD Graphics 6000). I use Proxmox. Emby installed via LXC. Hardware acceleration works fine as long as it is for H264. It works via Quick Sync as well as via VAAPI. But recently I tried to play HEVC movie and faced issue that direct play works fine but any video transcoding (bitrate limit) leads to full stop. As far as I know my hardware must be able to decode HEVC well. Emby shows me such an option in advanced settings. I attached a few logs: 1) Hardware detection log 2) Emby server log 3) Transcode H265 -> H264 log (with issues using Quick Sync) 4) Transcode H264 -> H264 log (no issues using Quick Sync). There is also no issues H264 -> H264 using VAAPI but didn't attach the log. ---- A few highlights: >>>>>> FindVideoEncoder - MediaType: h264, UseHardwareCodecs: True, HWA-Mode: Automatic Info Checking: 'VAAPI HD Graphics 6000 - H.264 (AVC)' Info Check successful - selecting 'VAAPI HD Graphics 6000 - H.264 (AVC)' >>>>>> FindVideoDecoder - MediaType: hevc, UseHardwareCodecs: True, HWA-Mode: Automatic Info Checking: 'QuickSync HD Graphics 6000 - H.265 (HEVC)' Info Check successful - selecting 'QuickSync HD Graphics 6000 - H.265 (HEVC)' >>>>>> Processing Plan Name CanDoInHW WillDoInHW Reason QuickSync HD Graphics 6000 - H.265 (H... >> True True Hardware Codec VideoInput >> False False Incompatible hardware context. Single Button Transcode Feature: Auto DoubleTap of Playback Correction
godbodian posted a topic in Feature Requests
Okay, given the workaround to the HEVC playback issues described here (Android TV 2.0.48 but Playback thru VLC for Android TV because of HEVC), I've abandoned the need for a fix that doesn't involve utilizing the workaround of double tapping 'Playback Correction' when video playback of HEVC stutters. I'm just requesting a single clickable button or prompt that would automatically undertake the same process of essentially double tapping Playback Correction. Here's the reason as to why; each time you click "PC", is essentially 14 button presses and to do such twice and quickly is difficult, as the rush is to complete such prior to the true start of whatever is being watched. Not to mention the processing of the first initiation of PC often slows down the processing of the second. Whereas a single button would streamline the processes of the workaround. Just a thought.- 3 replies

When streaming a video encoded in x265, the video plays fine on my android device. The video is not transcoded by the emby server and playback is good. But on Windows 11, when streaming the same video, the server transcodes the video from x265 to x264. This causes playback to stutter as the server cannot transcode the video fast enough. Ideally, the video should stream directly without transcoding. Does Emby Theater support x265 playback on Windows 11? If not, will it in the future?

Android TV 2.0.48 but Playback thru VLC for Android TV because of HEVC
godbodian posted a topic in Android TV / Fire TV
Okay this is somewhat of two problems together but the initial problem, I've found a viable work around so I don't really care about it as much. First, I use VLC as an external player on my AndroidTV with Emby because the playback on HEVC formatted movies is very inconsistent. I don't know if it's on my end or what (it very well could be) but enabling VLC as an external player makes every video play with the same smoothness. (That's the first "issue". Second, in using the above workaround VLC, regardless of formatting, unless the subtitles are embedded within the video file itself, they are .sub formatted external file or a .srt file labeled properly as "forced", VLC will not see it nor will the subtitles play. In addition, what I believe is happening is Emby is transcoding with the forced subtitles into VLC because although forced allow them to play, it's at the sacrifice of functions like rewind, fast forward and/or any manner of skipping via VLC. With any other video all said features operate correctly. I would love not to have to use VLC and be completely within the app but if not the VLC as the player is perfectly fine and doesn't make that much of difference but with watching movies with alot of subtitles, it does throw off the experience significantly. Thanks for any help you can provide. Emby 4.7.0.17 embyserver.txt- 76 replies

UPDATE: The results shown here are not reproducible. I'll re-post when I figure out what's going on. Converting a file from .mkv, H264 to .mp4, HEVC results in a file with a black screen and normal audio. I managed to destroy about 100 files this way. My fault for choosing "replace original media" without doing proper QC, but frustrating none the less. Emby Server on MacOS has been quite reliable of late and it lulled me into a sense of overconfidence. This is different from the HEVC conversion problems I encountered running the server on Linux. There the conversion fails but simply makes infinite attempts to convert the file. On MacOS the "conversion" runs to completion and simply results in an unusable file. Interestingly doing the conversion spawns one ffmpeg-transcode job and then several ffmpeg-remux tasks. Logs attached. This is running on a late 2012 27-inch iMac with a 3.4 GHz Core i7 procesor with 32GB of RAM. The OS is Mohave (10.14.6), and the graphics system is an NVidia GeForce GTX 680MX (2GB). Here are the conversion settings for the test case shown in the logs: embyserver.txt ffmpeg-remux-1fc0d893-38cd-4d4c-9cd7-30c5281b765c_1.txt ffmpeg-remux-6bd5e18e-5ff9-4380-9af1-0bd5e07724a4_1.txt ffmpeg-remux-63f63e3e-39ad-4c15-af2b-f5a13911526c_1.txt ffmpeg-transcode-211ed0ff-88d2-4285-ae8a-76464a1c27f2_1.txt

Couldn't find this searching the forums, so apologies if it's already been covered elsewhere.... Beginning in July, noticed some files just failed to play in the emby app on my Roku 2 4210R, cycling on "Retrieving". Server log showed too many errors and giving up on playback, and I could see multiple ffmpeg processes being spawned until the CPU on my emby server maxed out and I had to force an OS restart. What was odd was that these were media files I'd streamed before from my emby server to this specific roku with no problems. Wanted to blame windows updates (emby server is Win10, pulling files from a Synology NAS*), but I noticed my Roku Premiere+ on a different TV was able to play the same streamed files without issue. No problems when using the web player from my laptop, and the emby app in my android phone. Eventually figured out that the problem combination is HEVC coded files streamed to my Roku 2, but only after it updated to v10 of the Roku software (build 4209). Ran the files through MKVToolNix, no change - definitely only this combination seems to hit the issue. It is a 6 year old Roku, so I can't say I'm surprised it's not working, but it appears that Roku broke HEVC support for some older Roku devices with the latest software update. Hope this saves someone else some pain (if this already hasn't been covered elsewhere) [*I tried running emby server on my Synology, but it didn't work well and I had a spare NUC to use as an emby server] embyserver.txt

Transcoding HEVC with subtitles have some problem, while transcoding HEVC without subtitles are normal.
yukinon244 posted a topic in Web App
Hello, i have a big problem with some movies on my library. this happen for some HEVC mkv videos. in most cases, I can see movies correctly, even if it also transcodes, yet without any problems. for other case, with the subtitile, the movie frequently shows the fanart picture, but from dashboard I can see my cpu has no pressure on transcoding and it has already transcoded for a few seconds more. But after few seconds, it suddenly turn to the fanart picture (just like the loading page) and then show that "No compatible streams are currently available". If I turn off the subtitle, the movies transcodes correctly without problem. One point to note is that when there are no subtitles, it can be transcoded without any problem even if transcoding is required. But when it has to transcode with subtitles, the problem occured. By the way, the problem only occured on the emby website which it must transcode on the server, while on windows client it can be played normally and show the subtitles correctly because it transcodes in native. for example, I recorded the screen to show this complicated situation. https://1drv.ms/v/s!AlY_WtrxBUtlgp9BlwI0cdCRPMe8dg?e=a6dZJp the file are all in .mkv+HEVC format and the ass subtitle. if i disable subtitle, the film transcodes and plays correctly. If there isn't enough infomation, please tell me what I should do to provide it for you. what is the cause of this problem? how can i solve? thank you very much! -
Hey there, looks like Hardware Acceleration for HEVC is broken in latest Release. Emby switch to Software Transcode, but for this my Synology DS918+ is too slow. From reports in this Forum it looks like only 10bit Files are affected. On older Versions this was working fine. Is that a known Problem? Hello, I have something of a versions question, although I think mine differs a bit from typical. What's the recommended method, or advice, to manage multiple encodings of the same video, and, as a side question, how does Emby handle that? I want to keep an h.265 and h.264 encode of the same thing. Ideally, they'd look like a single video, and the engine would choose, preferentially, h.265 for remote clients, where supported and not explicitly over-ridden by by the client. i.e. take the 3Mbps h.265 preferentially to the 12Mbps h.264, if not manually selected from the client side. There's enough h.265 direct streaming support now amongst my friends/fam hardware that I'm finding it beneficial to keep both an h.265 version around. I've seen for multiple versions, a collection is usually recommended, but I don't really find that to be that great of a solution for this, and I'm hoping there might be some other approach. In particular, expecting/training my users to select the correct version may be a bit much. Thanks!

HI guys, I'm getting issues playing my 4k HEVC content on my 4k Firestick and Fire Cube. On the Firestick I get about a minute in when it starts stuttering and then stops completely. On the Cube I can get a couple of minutes in before it does the same. I've attached the log from the Cube and I sent the app log at about 11:20am today, Emby user is WOZZA.

Hi @@ebr, Android TV stats show that this movie is transcoding due to "Video Bitrate Exceeds Limit" Audio was expected to transcode due to playback through TV/headphones Playback rate set at Auto in ATV app Home Network Quality set to 4k - 120Mbps User Transcoding: Audio and Video Allowed Ethernet connection An ffmpg "Transcoding" log was produced which suggests Video encoding happened when it shouldn't have as the shield is capable of Direct Playback of this video - as proven when Video Trancoding is turned OFF As a test, I set Video transcoding = Not allowed and ATV Playback rate to 100Mbps This time, an ffmpg "Remux" log was produced - for the Audio i presume. Why transcode video when only audio can't be DirecStreamed?
Alefielm posted a topic in General/Windows
Hi, I'm trying to play this from Emby 4.4.0.40 Linux to Chromecast ultra using the Android app. When paying it says is transcoding because of the unsupported audio (i'ts ok, Chromecast doesn't support AAC 5.1), my question is, why is Emby transcoding the video too to x264? My server is on a RaspberryPi, so I try to get versions that doesn't need video encoding/conversion, so far I am streaming 4k 5.1 without problems. Is there any configuration to force emby to transcode only the audio whem the problem is audio? I hope that can be achieved with a lot less cpu power than converting video too. Thank you! Hello everyone, I installed Emby Server (3.5.3.0) on my DS3617 and installed the app on both iPhone and AndroidTV. When I use my phone or TV to play video files in H.264 format (I am at home, LAN connection, video files are about 5GB), the video will not be transcoded by emby server, drag the playback progress during playback. The article is very sensitive and there is no such thing as a Caton. But when I use the phone or AndroidTV to play the HEVC/H.265 format video file (1.6GB), the file is forced to be transcoded by the emby server. At this time, I drag the playback progress bar to buffer for a while (because The server is transcoding the video file, and my DS3617 CPU usage is almost 100%. When I try to use the Kodi app on AndroidTV to play video files in the HEVC/H.265 format at Emby server, it can be played directly. Can we not transcode when playing video files in HEVC/H.265 format by setting some options? Thank you for your answers.

Hi, I have my Emby Server (4.3.0.30) set up on a QNAP TS431P and am accessing it via the Emby WebApp (Chrome). I have noticed that some of my H265 content is acting up and lagging. As far as I can tell this has to do with Chrome not supporting the codec. Playing the file via Edge seems to work better but there is still considerable lag. Playing the file on my AppleTV (through Emby) as well as using VLC to play directly from the server (with Windows) both works without any issues or lag. I am assuming that's when the local hardware kicks in as compared to my NAS and/or Chrome restrictions. Is that assumption correct? So I am thinking about getting a Premiere subscription in order to get the Emby desktop applications, assuming that this will my laptop do the "heavy" lifting. Can I expect that this would resolve my issues of having laggy HEVC playback? Please let me know if you need any other information - looking forward to your feedback!

Still new to Emby, ive been a premire member for about 9 mo. i read somewhere if i got a better cpu that i could transcode on the fly better. So i got an i5-8400. Hello guys, I've noticed something about the filter option in the v4.0.0.2 of Emby. I'm not saying it's a bug, it may be the normal behavior but I want to confirm with you. When you have multiple versions of the same movie (let's say a 1080p and a 4k one), the filter feature does not handle it. It can be reproduced with the following: Venom - 1080p.mkv Venom - 2160p - 8bit.mkv Venom - 2160p - 10bit.mkv All 3 files are in the same folder /Movies/Venom/ All 3 files appear when you click on the Venom cover (screenshot below) Go to "Movie" and filter only on HEVC for video codec. Results : The movie Venom - 2160p - 10bit.mkv is not displayed. It seems that "filter" only takes into account the "default" version of the movie which seems to be the last one you added. (I'm not sure about this behavior, i'm only sure about the results explained above). I can post the logs but I could not find anything relevant inside. Some screenshots.

HEVC / x265 quicksync / hardware transcoding not working?

Evening all, just replaced my old Xbox One for a new Xbox One X with one of the reasons the support for x265 content however when trying to play a 1080p HEVC file through ET the server is transcoding the file rather than direct play. Tried the same file with Ember for Emby which does direct play the file but with no sound, any ideas what the issue is? Hi All, I've got a problem with playback of 1080p HEVC content on Android Mobile in combination with Emby Server on Windows. Server specs: CPU: i7 4770 GPU: 1050ti I bought the 1050ti specifically to be able to transcode HEVC content for streaming to my Android tablet (First gen Galaxy TAB S 10.5), the tablet is a couple of years old and therefore isn't capable of direct playing HEVC. 4k HEVC 10bit content Playback of 4k HEVC 10bit content works really well using NVENC hardware acceleration. The tablet off course has a sub-4k resolution and therefore the server transcodes to a lower resolution and from HEVC to h264. After a little jittering at the start of playback the rest of the video plays flawlessly. 1080p HEVC Playback of HEVC content with a resolution/bitrate however causes problems. I tried it with a 1080p, HEVC, 4mbit source. To my understanding the server should transcode this source from HEVC to H264 because the client isn't capable of direct playing HEVC content. Weirdly the server says the video is direct playing on the android client and playback of the video is actually pretty good. Occasionally there is some stuttering but its very watchable. Problem is that battery consumption on the tablet is very high (more then it can get from charging, so after three hours the battery is drained), which makes me think the client is somehow transcoding HEVC to H264. Question: Is there a way to force the server to transcode HEVC content if the Client isn't able to direct play HEVC content?

I am wondering if Emby may need to modify the commands for transcoding HEVC content? I've also attached my ffmpeg log for reference. I am using a Radeon RX 560 with VA API. Thanks! ffmpeg-log.txt emby-log.txt

Hi, I'm a currently a Plex user, but planning to switch to Emby, because Plex's UWP app is very buggy and unstable. The one thing that is stopping me now, is hevc support in Emby Theater UWP, AFAIK UWP apps support hevc natively through the extension app: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/store/p/hevc-video-extension/9n4wgh0z6vhq (And both Movies & TV app and Plex UWP support it very well) But in my testing, the UWP app always transcode hevc content. Is it disabled in the app? And when do you plan to add it?
