Regarding the Default Option for Chinese Subtitles After Version 4.9.1.80
vic4728 posted a topic in General/Windows
Since the server version was upgraded to Version 4.9.1.80, the default audio and subtitle options changed to “Chinese, Chinese (China), Chinese (Taiwan), Chinese (Hong Kong SAR)”. As a result, Mandarin audio tracks and Chinese subtitles are no longer recognized correctly. I personally believe this is because the internal names of audio tracks and subtitles in our movie videos are not labeled in Chinese. Our video files use English names for audio tracks and subtitles: Mandarin audio tracks are mostly labeled “Chinese,” Simplified Chinese subtitles as “Chinese Simplified” or “Simplified,” while Traditional Chinese subtitles for Taiwan and Hong Kong regions are named “Chinese Traditional” and “Traditional.” Therefore, I recommend reverting to the pre-4.8 design or adding a custom input option to improve the program's automatic recognition of audio tracks and subtitles. -
Not sure if something changed recently, so I'm posting this to see if others are having the same problem. My primary devices are Firestick and ShieldTV and Chrome browser AppleTV OS 18.2 Emby for AppleTV 1.9.2 (1) Video file used to test, Silo S01E01 WEB-DL with subrip subtitles (also used The Day of the Jackal, especially important, as there are foreign language parts that need forced english subtitles) Initiating play, playback quality set to Auto, file direct plays instantly, subtitles appear, skipping forward and backward is instant. During playback, if I force playback quality setting low enough that it needs to transcode, (1080p - 5Mbps), the video freezes, the video card disappears from the emby dashboard, after several seconds (10+), the video card appears in the emby dashboard, shows that it’s transcoding but no subtitles appear. The same video file testing playback, subtitles appear on Emby for Android and Emby for AndroidTV on phones, Firestick and ShieldTV and Chrome browser, regardless of direct play or transcoding with QuickSync. Attached logs, created a user for testing named “appletv” Testing was happening just before 10:06PM ET. embyserver.txt ffmpeg-transcode-cadc7b32-ed81-49aa-ba52-9d6a0c763251_1.txt

Hi there, first time poster and relatively new media server-hoster trying out Emby for a few weeks. Love the UX and just recently upgraded to Premiere. Currently running Emby and Jellyfin simultaneously in docker containers while I transition. Having an issue with playing media when using DVDSUB/PGS (image-based?) subtitles. I am able to play videos with SRT subtitles or no subtitles just fine, but whenever I load a media file with DVDSUB/PGS subtitles it seems to hang and my logs get filled with errors. I think that my issue may be related to the one described in this thread . For further context I have tested with both the web and chromecast clients and the error persists in each. Additionally, when I play the media with the DVDSUBs in Jellyfin it loads just fine. ffmpeg-transcode.txt

FYI: Subtitles not showing even though everything looks good
FatherSaint posted a topic in General/Windows
This is an FYI kind of post because I spent some time scratching my head before I figured it out... I use subtitles all the time in the form of external .SRT files and have never had any problems with them working. I just added Generation Kill to my library, ran Subtitle Edit in batch mode to strip out the HI stuff and it all looked good locally through MPC-HC. I copied it over to my Emby server to watch and found that it wasn't showing the subtitles. Emby knew all about the subtitles, they just weren't playing. To make a long story of troubleshooting shorter, I used Subtitle Edit in Batch Mode to "Fix Common Errors" and whatever that did, now the subtitles all worked without any issues. [For multiple Subtitles] Subtitle Edit: Tools > Batch Convert > Check FIX COMMON ERRORS [For a single subtitle] Subtitle Edit: Tools > FIX COMMON ERRORS The screen capture shows the batch settings that I use for every subtitle now. I hope that this helps someone, because it gave me an unwanted something to do for an hour. -
Does it support external PGS (.sup) subtitles? If not, are there any plans to support it?

Completed Remember audio and subtitles selection per TV show
capitaineflam25 posted a topic in Feature Requests
Hi, I’d love that audio and subtitles choice would be saved per show, according to what you select on the last episode you watched. The main audio/subtitles parameters is a good point but there are many cases it is not enough and you need to adjust audio and subtitles at the beginning of every episodes. For example i like to watch Casa de Pale in Spanish with french subtitles, The Big Bang Theory in English with french subtitles, French TV shows in french without subtitles, .... -
Is there any way to replace the embedded subtitles (at least I think that's what they are) in the original language with English from the SRT file I manually added so they aren't competing in the same area? For some reason I was able to find subtitles for "Legend of Zang Hai" on onopensubtitles.com, but Emby couldn't through the plugin & an in-app search. There are 40 episodes of this show's first season I think, so while it's watchable like this, I'd definitely prefer it cleaned up & displayed with a single language. Thanks.

Playback fails for anime with ASS subtitles unless "Disable Subtitle Filtering" is turned off.
solidsnakex37 posted a topic in Linux
I'm running Emby inside Docker on Unraid, and I'm having a recurring playback issue related to ASS subtitle rendering, especially with anime content. Here's what's happening: When "Disable Subtitle Filtering" is ON (toggle is green), playback fails or stalls on files that use detailed ASS subtitles. When "Disable Subtitle Filtering" is OFF (toggle is gray), playback works perfectly. This feels backward. Based on the label, I expected the green toggle (enabled) to help playback by disabling some kind of subtitle filtering. But it turns out the filtering is actually needed to get playback working. So I think the labeling or behavior of this setting may be confusing or reversed. The setting resets every time the container restarts. I run weekly backups that restart all containers, and the Diagnostic Options (including subtitle filtering) always revert to default. This means I have to manually disable this setting every week or playback will break again. Fonts for ASS subs are not reliably available. Even if I map a custom fonts directory into Docker, Emby’s ffmpeg build doesn't seem to support using mounted fonts. This makes subtitle rendering unreliable unless it’s done on the client. But some clients, like browsers or apps on other platforms, can't render ASS properly without server help. Burning in subtitles is not a good workaround. Anime files often have multiple subtitle tracks: Forced, Full English, and Full Translated. Burning in the wrong one removes user choice and breaks accessibility for multi-language households. Please add a way to persist Diagnostic Options across Docker restarts. Please consider allowing Emby to load custom fonts from a volume like /config/fonts so ASS rendering works properly without having to rebuild ffmpeg. If you have any suggestions on how I might be able to fix this, I am open to any suggestions. Thank you! Emby for Android - Subtitle Position Change During Playback (Like Emby for Android TV)
solidsnakex37 posted a topic in Feature Requests
As the title suggests, I want to have the subtitle position option put into the Emby for Android app, as it was in the Emby for AndroidTV app. When you are playing media, you can easily go into the settings, subtitles, then choose "Position..." and move it + / - to go up or down on the screen. I use this every single day based on what I am watching, and it's the one thing that is keeping me from moving off the Android TV app, because it's missing in the newer Android app. I really want to move to use the newer Android app but without this feature, I simply can't live without it. Example: -
Hello, I'm having an issue with the subtitle style in the Emby for Windows app. While color and size seems to be working, the drop shadow setting does not. It is stuck in "uniform" mode, and its quite thick at that. I compared to the web app version, where not only the uniform setting is less pronounced, but it also successfully switch from uniform, to drop shadow, to none. Here are some screenshots from the windows app: And here are some screenshots from the web app:

I've always named my external subitles using the format of MovieName (Year).en.srt Rednoah of Filebot helped me to craft a very specific script for naming and suggested that I use .eng for the subtitles instead of .en. I have a powershell script that makes renaming the subtitles from .en to .eng a super easy operation, but I wonder if it matters to Emby which language extension is used??

Hello @@Luke, Thanks for finally bringing Emby to LG AppStore I've tried the app on my TV (LG 43UJ701V / webOS 3.5) and unfortunately I cannot play with subtitles - they just don't show up no matter what language I choose. DLNA playback is OK and shows subtitles accordingly. I am using a custom profile named "LG Smart TV 2017" that is derived from the built-in "LG Smart TV" profile. The only difference is the support for HEVC; other than that, the profile is equal. You can find it attached below. I also noted in the logs that subtitle encoding is ANSI (aka windows-1252). Is this an issue? They work OK via DLNA or XPlay (plex). I've updated Emby server the latest version, also cleaned up the log folder before reproducing the issue so that you can have a clean slate of everything that is going on the server. I attached a zip with: The server log The subtitle file The custom profile that I'm using My tv model is: LG 43UJ701V / webOS 3.5 Waiting for an update! Thanks! server-63644482863.zip

Forced Subtitles are not meant to be played primarily, but additionally [Wrong subtitle choosing behaviour]
RokeWayne posted a topic in Android
Hi, together. Since a while I wanted to report some - in my humble opinion - wrong subtitle choosing behaviour in the emby player, at least on web, android and firetv-app. Maybe it could even be a server issue - I'm not sure, where this behaviour ultimately comes from. Lets start with my understanding, what standard and forced subtitle flags mean (cause different understanding could cause trouble when discussing) and please feel free to correct me, if I'm wrong: When a subtitle track is flagged "standard" in a media file, in most cases it means that a player should automatically select this track to show/play on your screen while playing your media. If you'd imagine watching an film or an anime with foreign dubs, the subtitle in your preferred language should/could be flagged "standard, so that you never have to actively select it with additional interactions in your player. When a subtitle track is flagged "forced", in my humble opinion (and how its typically implemented on film BDs and DVDs and on some subbed animes) the subtitle should be played "additionally" to the currently selected subtitle track, either "off", "standard" or whichever track is actually selected to play/show. When a subtitle track isn't flagged at all, the subtitle track should not be selected by the video player at all and is only used by discretion of the user. Forced and Standard flag on a subtitle track CAN be mixed together. If deselected from the user, a video player should anyways show whatever is in this track. Mostly used for foreign signs in films and animes. Now to my point, why I'm making the distinctions: My Emby players, either on my phone or on my fireTV stick - but also the webplayer, so maybe its an server issue? - always choose forced flagged subtitle tracks over any "standard" track which completely disrupts any watch or binging session, because its saved for every file/episode, so just manually correcting it for an episode is no help, because the next one starts with the wrong subtitle all again. It's even worse, when you don't use the subtitle configuration on the emby server, but try to use the audio and subtitle track config in your files, so rewatching a series results in the same wrong subtitle selection. An example from an episode of an anime: Thats how my subtitle options look in relevant casesright after starting playback and how it looks on the mkv-metadata config of the specific file: For your help the translation: Aus = off Ja = yes Nein = no "Erzwungen" / "Anzeige erzwingen" = "forced", here in this case "S&S" stands for "Songs & Signs", cause its an anime Starting this file locally on my pc with "vlc" or "media player classic" or starting it with kodi as a backend works perfectly fine: The Dialog subtititle track gets choosed, which is the important point here and depending of the player capabilites the forced subtitles additionally show up. But playing it over emby or emby apps always results in playing the "signs and songs" subtitle track and forcing the user to interact with the player. Could you look into this topic for the future? Regarding my expectations here: It's not a huge issue when watching films, and since I'm mostly using Kodi on my FireTV stick, the issue arises not that often. But occasionally I watch my stoff when commuting, and in these occassions I regularly notice the wrongly choosed subtitles. Anyway I don't expect you to rush here. Check, if the actual implementation is how you intended it and if you think that point could be corrected, do it whenever it works out for you guys. Keep up the nice work. Kind regards from a happy Lifetime license user Roke PS: I tried to find any related topics, but didn't see any. Feel free to move the topic or close it, if the point was already adressed elsewhere. -
Media skips back/glitches and subtitles starts from the beginning
Atreus22 posted a topic in Synology
Hello everyone, I've a very annoying issue ony my premiere emby server where e.g. an episode of a show is being played back with subtitles. After about 2/3 the playback suddenly glitches for a moment, rewinds for 2, 3 seconds and the subtitles start from the beginning catching up to the current timestamp which takes a couple of minutes. This behavior is reproducible on multiple Android and Windows (Emby Client) devices. I can also reproduce this issue if i simply skip forward a couple of minutes in the timeline. Every time i do that, the subtitles start from the very beginning trying to catch up. So far i noticed this behavior on 2 different shows. I don't know what to troubleshoot at this point. Only thing i can think of is to create a new emby server in a container and try to reproduce this behavior their again. Anybody has any tips or input how to solve this issue? If i can collect any logs, record the behavior or anything else to help you help me troubleshoot this, let me know. Thank you -
In-Progress Remember audio and subtitles selection per TV show
Carlonchis posted a topic in Feature Requests
Hi. I'm facing same issue. While "remember audio" works as expected and changes the audio of all episodes when you change it in one, "remember subtitles" option doesn't work at all. No matter what subtitle mode you set, subtitles are not propagated to other episodes. Do we have any update to this topic? -
In-Progress Remember audio and subtitles selection per TV show
65535 posted a topic in General/Windows
Seems to work as expected for audio tracks, but it's completely broken for subtitle tracks. I can't get the subtitles to stick for other episodes under any scenario. Even if I reach the end of one episode with the desired track selected and let it auto play the next episode, it starts with no subtitles selected (or whatever the default would dictate). -
Hi Team, I'm currently using the latest build of the Android Universal app (the version that works on Android TV). I've tested playback of the same file on Emby Web, and everything works fine there. However, I came across a thread mentioning issues with SRT and ASS subtitles on the Universal app. Is this a known issue with the current version? Edit: I converted a SRT subtitle file to an ASS subtitle file using Aegisub, and it seems to work on Universal? Thanks in advance!

External subtitles naming convention for Hearing-impaired/CC/SDH
morpheus65535 posted a topic in General/Windows
This post is probably intended mainly for @Luke but I will appreciate comment/upvote or anything else that would benefit the discussion I'm the dev behind Bazarr and currently having discussion with the devs teams of major media servers/players (eg: Plex, Jellyfin) and I would like to bring Emby to the discussion table to get all the major teams to adopt a mutual standard regarding those subtitles. So, would it be possible in Emby to interpret correctly the language name for subtitles filename that would look like this? Film.en.hi.srt Film.en.cc.srt Film.en.sdh.srt They should be detected as English subtitles and it would be nice to see a custom tag to make the user aware of the hi/cc/sdh content. Thanks for joining the discussion. I hope will reach a consensus for that standard! -
Hello There, When i want to look at a movie with subrip subtitles in it, the webos app can't find a good stream, when i put it to no subtitles movie will start normal. If i put subrip subtitle on during the movie de movie just won't continue, The other app in the webos store called "Screenplay" will play the movie without any problem. I know it is not a server problem because on all devices it works fabulous, only the webos app has this problem. When i download a subtitle and load it, there is no problem, the problem only exists when the subtitle is packed in the movie. (*.mkv file)

Emby client on Nvidia Shield Pro 2019 is skipping lines from srt file
Amdir posted a topic in Android TV / Fire TV
Hello, This is most certainly a very annoying bug. Emby client (Android TV) on Nvidia Shield Pro 2019 is skipping lines from srt file while Emby for Android on Shield and Emby for Android on an Android phone is not doing that. Maybe this will help you in debug: In additional tests, Plex client on Shield is having the same bug! Haven't find the time to test Jellyfin but why 2 different media servers' clients having the same bug on the same place. (Skipped lines from srt files are at the same place for both clients) From the attached subtitle. 87 is missing from video screen: There lots of missing lines on screen from subtitle file from now on. It begins with this line. Sharing screenshot from Android client and AndroidTV client: Jujutsu. Kaisen. S01E01. 1080p. WEB-DL. x265. 10Bit. 2CH. HEVC-sLaX.srt- 12 replies
