  1. Hello everyone I got recently a Shield Pro which should my LibreELEC to replace. And my plan is to switch directly to the Emby App instead of using Emby for Kodi. But now I have discovered three things, that triggers a unwanted transcoding: Subtitles in the "DVDSUB" format, m2ts container and DD+ 7.1 audio tracks (is supported by the speakers). On Emby for Kodi its all fine (on the Shield). So can I do something against these issues in the Emby App? Thanks.

    Does Emby support NVENC?

Does Emby support NVENC and if it support how do I pass the limitations with a GTX 1070?

    I got a surprise...

I purchased a Dell R720 server to use as a hypervisor. One of the VM’s I plan on running will be used for Emby Server. This Dell came with an Nvidia Tesla M2070Q graphics card installed, which was a surprise. I did plan on seeing how Emby ran on the VM first and if needed I would passthrough a graphics card to take over the transcoding roll. Does anyone know how the Nvidia Tesla M2070Q would perform, or should I just sell it on and use a more suitable card if needed? Transcodes would possible max at 4 streams and I’d ideally like to start using 4k content, so assume 4x 4k transcodes. Side note, I have an MSI HD R6950 Twin Frozr III Power Edition/OC graphics card in my current HTPC that should become free once the server is all up and running. Would this AMD card be a better pick for the transcoding, or should I stick to Nvidia for now? Thanks in advance for any info.
  4. For inf, I have solved an issue with .ts format files recorded from broadcasts and saved on a NAS, played through emby on a Windows 10 pc to a chromecast. I set up hardware acceleration using an Nvidia card but only direct play happened, which stuttered and then failed. Solution was to transfer files and library pointers to the pc, after which the Nvidia kicked in. Hope that helps someone. Much better for recording than Plex, btw.
  5. Hi, I'd love some help please with a frustrating playback issue that suddenly emerged on my Nvidia Shield running Emby for Kodi (native/direct paths). Native/direct sync works. Kodi very briefly shows "Working..." when I press play, then goes back to the menu, all within half a second. My quick and highly uneducated look at the log file showed some errors around demuxing, but I don't know if that's significant. Recent changes to server I imagine it's relevant to point out I've recently upgraded my OS X version on my server machine, and also tinkered with its static IP address (but I ended up returning the address to what it was before the issue) - see below for more details. I'm sorry, I realsie it would be very helpful to be clear when the behaviour started in relation to both of those changes, but I cannot be sure which of those was responsible. Native vs Dynamic The playback error only seems to happen in my preferred native/direct path configuration, so that's a pretty good hint that it's a path/network issue I guess (I'm no IT expert). If I go through the emby for kodi app and select folders with (dynamic) written next to them they work ok, but I'd love to get the snappier native playback working again. Issue on: The playback issue is only encountered on my Nvidia Shield P2897 box, which I use Emby for Kodi (4.0.5) add-on on Kodi 18.4 (native/direct paths setup). Unaffected - these stream fine When I run Emby on my Android phone (galaxy s10e) I can access and stream videos on the server fine via Emby and VLC on the phone, but I guess they use the dynamic playback mode as well. Server My Emby Server (4.2.1.0) is running on a late 2014 iMac, which I recently updated to OS X Catalina (10.15.1). I'm sorry I cannot be specific with times, but the Kodi issues started around this time, and I saw a post about clicking on and off the sharing on the mac to get things running again, and I've done that. As mentioned above, I also changed the IP address of the server for a brief period, as my phone was taking the same IP address, but I then moved my mac back to it's original IP when I worked out how to set a static IP for my phone to stop them clashing. The server's IP is now back to the same value it was when it worked, which is the same as that in the "Shared Network Folder" in the library, and I've done Emby for Kodi database resets and resyncs to be sure the Shield has the right IP paths, but to no avail. The log is available here - I'd value the interpretations of a skilled user (scroll to 2019-11-18 at 19:16 to 19:17).

Nvidia Shield Wake up on LAN

Good morning! I saw two threads discussing this, but didn't see a conclusion to them yet (for one the last reply was from over an year ago, so I'm hoping it's been updated since then). I recently transitioned my Emby server from my PC to my Nvidia Shield. I have my media on an external hard drive that is directly connected to the Shield (I don't have a NAS yet). Although I don't mind having the Shield running all the time, I didn't want my external hard drives to be continuously running, so I have it currently set for them to shut off when the Shield goes to sleep. However, I did notice when I did that, I was no longer able to access the Emby Server. I tried the Wake Server option, and I get the following message: "Wake On LAN packets were sent to your server machine, but we're unable to connect to your Emby Server. Your machine may need a little more time to wake, or Emby Server may not be actively running on the machine." Am I doing something wrong, or does Android not have a WOL option?
  7. I Got a Ryzen 7 2700x with a 1070 on my server pc 4K its Intense even on a 2700x I will like to know if emby will manage both or if it only uses CPU or GPU....It Will Be nice if you can turn on a feature that let's users use the 2 encoders on the card and other users to use the CPU encode depending on the order of demand..Tank You Guys In Advance!!!

    Hardware transcoding

Hi everyone ! I'm back after upgrading my graphic card ! I had trouble using transcoding because my old GT430 didn't support NVENC, but now i'm using an GTX980 I'm sure this big boy can easily transcode a lot of thing, but unfortunatly it won't... As u can see in dash board picture, it's using nvidia nvenc to encode but using sofware decode, i think this is the bottleneck here... How can i force using hardware decode instead of software ? Thanks for this awesome product Ben
  9. Hi there. Moving over from Plex I have set up Emby server on my shield (latest 16GB model) and it is all working well. I have all my media on a large external usb drive and have set all the temp folders (cache, transcode, metadata, sync etc) to said drive. When syncing files, larger mkv files especially seem to start converting at a good rate (about 4x ish) and then after around 20% (slightly varies per file) the conversion stage just hangs. The Device/sync settings page simply displays the percentage it is stuck on as does the same part of the iOS app. The ffmpeg log seems to cut off mid line and not be updated any further when this happens. Logs attached. Any help much appreciated. I have tried varying combinations of speed throttling, cpu cores etc to no avail. I have even opened the file in the sync folder on the server and it seems to play up until the point the conversion failed. Plenty of space on the drive and the file plays fine when simply watching via the iOS app or tv emby client (lg). Thanks, Richard. ffmpeg.txt HardwareDetection.txt embyserver.txt
  10. Hi, First post and hope I'm on right section for posting this. On going through the start up process on Nvidia Shield TV(2017) I put in the IP of my laptop. Now I want to delete this network so I need to delete the server right?. But when I do it seems to auto remember my network IP address next time i enter the emby app on Nvidia Shield. Also it seems its impossible to log out. Again it remembers my login and I cant get it to forget my login. Ive tried long pressing and selecting 'Forget Server' but it doesnt work. Nothing I have tried has worked to delete my server on Nvidia Shield. I have even tried a new account but no luck, Ive tried a data reset, and uninstall but nothing works!. Any suggestions?.
  11. Hi There, I just completed a migration of my Emby Server 4.1.0.1 beta running headless Centos 7.6 from a virtualized Hyper-V (2008 R2) to Bare Metal (Intel Core2 Quad Q9300 with Gigabyte [nvidia] GeForce GTX 1050 and SSD) for the added horsepower of dedicated CPU access and transcoding capabilities. I haven't done a whole lot to this OS in terms of setup. Clean minimal install of operating system update updated packages (yum) Install Emby Open Firewall Port install backup plugin restore backup from my VM What I'm struggling to determine is a) has emby detected my GTX 1050? is emby using my GTX 1050 to transcode? c) is there anything I might need to install (e.g. Nvidia drivers) to get this all working? I'm not 100% certain what it is I'm looking for in the logs to ascertain whether this is working or not. I'm attaching the latest Transcoding log and Hardware Detection Log. Thanks in advance HardwareDetection.txt Transcoding.txt
  12. Hi all, I've just updated my CUDA drivers to version 10 and I cannot get transcoding to work. I'm running emby (currently version 4.0.0.1) in Docker with the following Dockerfile FROM alpine:latest AS builder ARG VERSION=3.6.0.46 RUN apk update \ && apk add wget ca-certificates \ && wget --progress=bar:force -O /emby.deb \ https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Emby.Releases/releases/download/${VERSION}/emby-server-deb_${VERSION}_amd64.deb FROM nvidia/video-codec-sdk:8.2-ubuntu18.04 COPY --from=builder /emby.deb /emby.deb RUN (dpkg -i /emby.deb ; true) \ && echo /opt/emby-server/lib/ >> /etc/ld.so.conf \ && echo /opt/emby-server/lib/samba >> /etc/ld.so.conf \ && ldconfig ENTRYPOINT ["/opt/emby-server/bin/emby-server"] Logs embyserver.txt https://pastebin.com/8KTsdNUB hardware_detection.txt https://pastebin.com/xT52f9F1 ffmpeg-transcode https://pastebin.com/5wCQ9D6s Any clues why this might not work? executing ffmpeg in containers returns the following: root@259f4dbd38a3:/# /opt/emby-server/bin/ffmpeg ffmpeg version 4.0.2-emby_2018_12_09 Copyright (c) 2000-2018 the FFmpeg developers built with gcc 6.3.0 (crosstool-NG crosstool-ng-1.23.0) configuration: --cc=x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-gcc --arch=x86_64 --prefix=/home/embybuilder/Buildbot/x64/ffmpeg-x64/staging --pkg-config=pkg-config --disable-doc --disable-ffplay --disable-vdpau --disable-xlib --enable-fontconfig --enable-gnutls --enable-gpl --enable-iconv --enable-libass --enable-libfreetype --enable-libfribidi --enable-libmp3lame --enable-libopus --enable-libtheora --enable-libvorbis --enable-libwebp --enable-libx264 --enable-libzvbi --enable-version3 --enable-libsmbclient --enable-cuda --enable-cuvid --enable-libmfx --enable-nvenc --enable-vaapi --enable-cross-compile --cross-prefix=x86_64-pc-linux-gnu- --extra-libs='-lexpat -lfreetype -lfribidi -lfontconfig -liconv -lpng -lz -lvorbis -logg -lnettle -lhogweed -lgmp -laddns-samba4 -lasn1util-samba4 -lauthkrb5-samba4 -lCHARSET3-samba4 -lcliauth-samba4 -lcli-cldap-samba4 -lcli-ldap-common-samba4 -lcli-nbt-samba4 -lcli-smb-common-samba4 -lcom_err -lcommon-auth-samba4 -ldbwrap-samba4 -ldcerpc-binding -ldcerpc-samba-samba4 -ldl -lflag-mapping-samba4 -lgenrand-samba4 -lgensec-samba4 -lgse-samba4 -lgssapi_krb5 -llibcli-lsa3-samba4 -llibsmb-samba4 -linterfaces-samba4 -liov-buf-samba4 -lk5crypto -lkrb5 -lkrb5samba-samba4 -lkrb5support -lldb -lldbsamba-samba4 -lmessages-dgm-samba4 -lmessages-util-samba4 -lmsghdr-samba4 -lmsrpc3-samba4 -lndr -lndr-krb5pac -lndr-nbt -lndr-samba-samba4 -lndr-standard -lreplace-samba4 -lsamba-cluster-support-samba4 -lsamba-credentials -lsamba-debug-samba4 -lsamba-errors -lsamba-hostconfig -lsamba-modules-samba4 -lsamba-security-samba4 -lsamba-sockets-samba4 -lsamba-util -lsamba3-util-samba4 -lsamdb -lsamdb-common-samba4 -lsecrets3-samba4 -lserver-id-db-samba4 -lserver-role-samba4 -lsmbconf -lsmbd-shim-samba4 -lsmb-transport-samba4 -lsocket-blocking-samba4 -lsys-rw-samba4 -ltalloc -ltalloc-report-samba4 -ltdb -ltdb-wrap-samba4 -ltevent -ltevent-util -ltime-basic-samba4 -lutil-cmdline-samba4 -lutil-reg-samba4 -lutil-setid-samba4 -lutil-tdb-samba4 -luuid -lwbclient -lwinbind-client-samba4 -ldrm' --target-os=linux --enable-shared --disable-static libavutil 56. 14.100 / 56. 14.100 libavcodec 58. 18.100 / 58. 18.100 libavformat 58. 12.100 / 58. 12.100 libavdevice 58. 3.100 / 58. 3.100 libavfilter 7. 16.100 / 7. 16.100 libswscale 5. 1.100 / 5. 1.100 libswresample 3. 1.100 / 3. 1.100 libpostproc 55. 1.100 / 55. 1.100 Hyper fast Audio and Video encoder usage: ffmpeg [options] [[infile options] -i infile]... {[outfile options] outfile}...   13. Synology 1618+ on Emby 3.6.0.84-1-beta TV is mid-level 2016 Samsung (sorry don't have the model # on hand) Nvidia Shield (latest updates etc) So far all non-4k-hdr bluray rips I've created work very well. I have the hdmi 1 set to accept uhd color, the shield set to auto passthrough (I believe) the correct settings and in emby auto everything, plus the tv picture settings set to the uhd (but turned off the "hdr mode" which I read was just like an emulation of the hdr, it appears more washed out with it enabled). I think I read my tv doesn't do the 2020 color space and the result is a darker image. I try and lower contrast and increase brightness but it appears a bit washed out. I have a feeling purchasing a new tv that is fully hdr ready will solve this issue instantly but that is about a year away. I am collecting 4k movies now not even so much for the bumped resolution but the beautifully-rich color enhancements (for some not all transfers). Is there anything to be done in emby or the shield to help mitigate this issue until I can buy a new tv? I don't have many 4k hdr movies and don't plan on collecting a ton (just a select few I rewatch, dark knight, infinity war etc) but it'd be nice to enjoy them right now instead of the (still good) blu-ray rips I've already done.
  14. I'm in the process of trying to shift from Plex to Emby. On the Nvidia Shield Emby client there appears to be a limit of displaying favorites to just 50 TV shows. You can add as many as you want, but only scroll through the first 50. This seems arbitrary ... is there any way to eliminate the 50-show limit? I would think an app that can stream 100GB 4k videos could probably handle a tagged list of >50 ... say, 50,000 ... easily? I'd be delighted if I'm just missing a simple way to display more favorites.
  16. Suddenly today Emby will no longer play AVI video files. Have had no issue until today, with either nVidia Shield or on Fire TV 2nd gen. See attachments... EmbyServer.txt ffmpeg-transcode-cec27e80-6f99-455f-babd-83b17b2ed346.txt
  17. So, lately I've been using NVENC with a crf of 18, and the ultrafast preset. Most of the time this seems to be fine, but sometimes video's will just start glitching. This is usually the case with videos with AAC audio. So, I heard QuickSync is more reliable, but doesn't this run entirely on the CPU? I prefer encoding on the GPU, since it's stronger than my CPU. Anyways, I'd like to know what settings I should use. I don't really mind a little quality loss, just nothing too severe, but what I find most important is that every video plays back without any glitches, and that the encoding process is fast. My specs: 8GB RAM i5-4440 CPU GTX 970 GPU
  18. I have a strange issue with nvidia shield tv using emby app. It seems that the "Watched"/"Unwatched" status doesn't get updated after user sets the status on a show/episode/season unless user gets out of season and goes back into it or changes screen. STR 1. Go to a tv show screen/choose a show or episode 2. Press and hold remote button to set an episode to WATCHED or UNWATCHED 3. notice that the show/episode/season doesn't get a new status (green checkbox doesnt appear or disappear) 4. go out of current screen and go back in ** notice that the show or episode now has updated status. This looks like this may be a bug.
  19. Hi all! First of all, let me just say, I love Emby. As soon as I switched from Plex, I fell in love. Not just with the Kodi integration, but everything about the server and controls seem better for me. Seriously, awesome work to the devs and everyone involved. I went premium as soon as I could and recently just changed from a monthly to a yearly subscription. Which is why this next part is so hard... when I read the news about Plex getting a server app for Nvidia Shield TV, I was excited and disappointed. Excited because this could mean I can finally turn off my PC and only wake it for things like games. But I was disappointed that the news said Plex and not Emby. I really don't want to move back to Plex. I'm definitely going to give it some time to see how the server even works out. And regardless, I've still got 10-11 months on my year at Emby left. So it got me wondering if something like this is in the works, on the radar, or even possible with Emby. I don't know how closely Plex had to work with Nvidia to get this to work and I don't know if there is any kind of exclusivity deal with them. I mean, after all, Plex comes preloaded on the Shield TV. So I just thought I'd start a discussion to see if this is possible or planned, if anyone is interested/cares, or basically any of your feelings on this matter. Also, I apologize if this isn't the best place to post this. It's meant to be a discussion and not really a request for help or support. Also, I tried searching and didn't find anyone mention anything like this (but my search skills are often under par). Anyway... discuss?
  20. I have never been able to get Emby Theater (software not Win store app)to play on my desktop. It has 3 monitor setup. I hadn't gotten around to making a post about it. Emby theater will just play audio of live tv, but just show a black screen. Same black screen with audio plays with local H264 files. When i try to playback my live TV recordings (mpeg2) it just loads it for a sec(black screen) then stops going back to the video description page. Doesn't matter what monitor I load it up on. No change if I toggle the Video rendered form Madvr to EVR etc. I disable my 2 other monitors via the Nvidia control panel and only use my primary monitor, Emby Theater plays all media fine. Currently using Emby Theater 2.5.40. But this issue I noted even back when it first came out. I did it on my GTX 970 and still does it on my GTX 1080. Nvidia drivers made no differance but are current. Still using the same monitors. Windows 10. Not sure on how to get any logs or more info from the software itself. Nothing seems to be reported on the server or transcode logs on the server itself that would indicate an issue. They look the same each time i test it, multi monitor enabled or not.
  21. I'm running Emby on an old 4 core Lynnfield Xeon processor. It's running as a guest in Proxmox VE, along with several other VMs (OpenMediaVault, Nextcloud, Minecraft, etc). I've been thinking about building a dedicated box just for Emby since I've spread the gospel such that I'm regularly having 2-3 users on at any given time and the poor machine just can't keep up if titles need to be transcoded. I'm thinking a box a separate server would hold the files, so the Emby hardware would just serve/trancode. I've seen folks talk about hardware acceleration and I'm curious how robust it is in Emby. Is there a max number of users that, say, Quicksync can serve? Are other users denied access, or can it serve two users with Quicksync and the rest with CPU transcode? Are there any distributions that have a recent enough version of ffmpeg to work with hardware encoding or am I looking at installing a third-party package or compiling ffmpeg myself? Is anyone using Arch Linux with hardware encoding on Intel or Nvidia hardware? Are there any plans for a Radeon/Ryzen hardware acceleration solution? Does anyone think I would be better off encoding my library to minimize trancoding instead of fitting hardware to the problem I'm facing? Sorry if I'm asking too many questions. Thanks, folks.
  22. I'm having a strange problem that recently started occuring. While on the main page, or any page for that matter, the fanart for every item appears correctly. The problem is when I click on either a movie or a show to open its contents, the fanart stays for a second and then fades to black. It's as if it were toggling through the extrafanart of that selection but all the images seem to be black. This even happens on shows that have no extrafanart folder. Not sure what the problem is. Anyone have any ideas? I'm usting the Emby app on my Nvidia Shield TV first gen.
  23. It kind of sucks that this "recommendations row" can't be outright hidden but the fact it can't and the fact that Emby can use it, I think I see an opportunity. My understanding is that Emby can't give recommendations unless it has a user logged in. For personal SHIELDs, this isn't a problem but in a multi-user situation, no user is logged in by default so no recommendations are shown initially. Suggestion: If Emby for Android TV has no user logged in and therefore has no recommendations to offer, use a guest account and offer the Live TV channels as recommendations. If they back out of the Live TV channel they tuned to, give them the channel guide. If they back out of that, close Emby (assumption being they're not watching any more or a user is going to log in). Think a cable box or satellite receiver system...try to mimic that with "recommendations" being the portal to it. I could see regular users using this too due to simplicity. For example, a lot of people like turning on the news at certain times of the day. That's something that's really only viewed live and once it is over, they turn it off. Showing the news channel in recommendations would as closely mimic tuning to the TV channel normally with the added benefit of being able to pause it. I really hope this idea can be implemented. I think a lot of users I deal with (myself included) would really appreciate it.
  24. Last week Marshmallow was released for the nVidia SATV and after installing and testing Emby everything worked very well. Last night my wife and I were able to watch shows and we had no problem. Today my wife went to watch a movie and it wouldn't play. We get to the login screen, go in and find a movie, select the movie, choose play, and then it comes up with a gray screen. This happens for anything I select. Where can I look for logs to help troubleshoot? I have tried connecting with Emby on my LG G4 and it played fine. I tried using the web client from a Windows 10 box and it played fine. I have tried factory resetting the Shield, reinstalled Emby, and it still does the same thing. It actually hangs the Shield so I have to go the Home screen and sometimes kill the app. I can run the HD Homerun app and Sling TV from it just fine. Any idea on where to start would help. Thanks to anyone that can offer assistance.
  25. good afternoon, I am looking to enable hardware transcoding on my new emby server, as my current server just isnt cutting it anymore. I read over the Wiki but it appears to be a little outdated. So I figure id just ask here. 1. Is a nvidia GTX 660TI an adequate card for hardware transcoding? I need a minimum of 2 simultaneous streams. Its a Kepler GPU so it is capable of NVENC. but how many simultaneous streams can it handle? Also, what about a GTX730? id prefer to use the 730 if possible as its a single slot card and would use less space and power. 2. What is the proper procedure to enable hardware transcoding with an nvidia card? I have read the Wiki, but it seems like it might be outdated. If not please correct me. Thank You
