    Transcoding Monitor

Is it possible to create another panel in Dashboard, where we could monitor transcodings in progress? Would be very helpful to understand whether is your Emby transcoding, for which media, for which reason (if possible), and for which user. Maybe some CPU % data, threads in use, etc...etc...
  2. sorry for the NOOB question. im looking into setting up emby to play with, and was wondering if i can enter my own ffmpeg encode string for transcoding to myself when im connecting from an external ip? ive searched this forum, and the wiki, and can only find where says to set max bitrate, but ive found that low bitrate encodes might require other settings to have an enjoyable playback experience. many thanks in advance, Dam0
  3. Evening all, I'm basically looking for an answer to the title - Direct play XviD and transcode DivX. Possible? It seems I'm only allowed to specify "mpeg4" in the DLNA profiles so my server has to unnecessarily transcode Xvid videos. If this isn't possible, could I request that this be something to consider in a future release? I'm running version 3.0.5821.0 on Windows. Thanks very much!

    Roku Playback Issue

Hi, I installed this a few hours ago on my MacBook Pro and Roku 1. The Roku 1 connects to and sees all the media in my folder, even creating thumbnails from the media. But once I press Play, the blue "retrieving" bar gets just under half way across and freezes. It stays like that for a minute or two, then returns to the previous screen. A transcode log is created, but no transcodes are created in the "transcoding-temp" folder. I've tried AVIs, MOVs & MP4s using an h264 or MP4 codec. Please note that if there's a preferred codec / wrapper combo that would make streaming easier or more efficient, please let me know as I would have no problem transcoding my files as needed to accommodate the process. As instructed, I'm attaching the server log and transcode log. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Chaz server-63588030976.txt transcode-d0856d29-1297-4f13-8946-1b69116bbd0e.txt
  5. I have two files which for test purposes I have encoded using FFMPEG: ffmpeg -t 10 -i bunny.mp4 -map_metadata -1 -codec:v libx264 -profile:v high -level 4.0 -b:v 1000k -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ac 2 Bunny1.mkv ffmpeg -t 10 -i bunny.mp4 -map_metadata -1 -codec:v libx264 -profile:v high -level 4.0 -b:v 1000k -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ac 2 Bunny2.mp4 Bunny1.mkv seems to require transcoding to playback, where as Bunny2.mp4 does not. I understand there might be some sort of issue with Emby on the AFTVS and MKVs (which is not an issue with Kodi on the AFTVS). I don't understand why the video would be re-transcoding when transcoding for the stick. Wouldn't it make sense for the Video (and Audio) streams to be copied by ffmpeg (with only the container format being changed)? If we could just change the container format the CPU overhead for the emby server would be MUCH lower. I'm guessing the answer might be that we need some control over keyframes to allow for HLS streaming, but if direct playback of the MP4 is possible, is it not possible to use this container format and not use HLS streaming? The AFTV is set to 40mbps and to play via VLC. I see Trans/I for Bunny1.mkv and Direct/I for Bunny2.mp4 Below is some more info that might be helpful... Transcode yes, transcode no

Hi, i did an interesting test tonight. When playing an mp4 (1280x720) on my android, it runs nice and smooth and no transcoding takes place. If i try to run the exact same movie on my desktop via firefox, it starts jumping and not play smoothing. I see that the transcode folder has an webm file while playing in the browser but not when playin on the android. REducing the bitrate in the web browser doesn't help. Why does Emby think it needs to transcode in web client (21" screen on pentium i5 3Ghz) and not in android (samsung galaxy 10"). THe server is install on DELL POweredge (quite old with pentium 4 2.8 Ghz and 0.5 GB ECC RAM). Any thoughts on possible reasons and what I can do to stop transcoding when not necessary? Custom DLNA Profile

All, I have 90%of my movie collection in Video_TS folders which contain all of the vob, bup, and ifo files (the other 10% is in MKV, avi, or MP4). They play great on the emby mobile apps, and on the web, but they are not playing on my samsung TV's, the vobs that is. Therefore i think what i have to do is create a custom DLNA profile for my tv's, correct me if im wrong. I tried to do this for my upstairs samsung tv, but i don't even know where to begin, i tried a couple of things, but to no avail. Can someone help me get started setting up a profile that will transcode my video_ts folders/vobs to mkv or another compatible container. Thank you in advance for any guidance you may give me.
  8. App Description: Server Don't know the situation in other countries, but most videos in my collection have all their subs inside the e.g. mkv. Thanks to the help from @@Luke and @@ebr I finally got a clue that in Emby external subs are much more handy than the internal because they don't need to be extracted before playback starting. I'm referring to this two threads: http://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/21988-default-to-external-subtitle/ http://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/23769-problem-with-videos-with-subtitle/ The problem: Most internal forced subs are also flagged as default. So even when the user exports internal subs, Emby still prefers the internal one flagged default and forced and the Auto subtitle settings in preferences become obsolete. This leads again to the long period until the movie starts because of the sub extracting process. Only but very long and uncomfortable solution would be remuxing all movies with forced subs (for me around 400, pretty sure a lot people have also a big amount of movies like that). Request: Is a setting possible to prefer external over internal subs or a switch to ignore internal subs if external is present? The Goal: Using files with exported subs without remux them all or manually choose when the stream already runs, because other tools handle internal subs well and like this we have a maximum compability for different usages of the files.

May be transcode problem but ...

Hi, installed Emby last night as I want to replace Plex (don't like closed source). Quite impressed up to now although still haven't managed to see one film yet. Can't see film in web client or android client, both saying "There was an error playing the video.".Music plays correctly. Emby Version 3.0.5781.0 with ffmpeg version 0.8.17-6:0.8.17-1 (basically a fully updated Debian Wheezy to a few minutes ago) Now, this I think it's a transcode problem as I see "Unrecognized option 'codec:v:0'" in the transcode log (see below). One thing that I did like of Plex is the "Direct streaming" option which i think Emby doesn't have. It tries to transcode even videos that are not transcoded on Plex (I have Plex also running on the same machine). Am i correct in thinking that there is no direct streaming with Emby? Thanks Antonio TRANSCODE LOG (also attached){"Protocol":"File","Id":"6920af97c4418d11be79207c0722539b","Path":"/exports/zeusmedia/Movies/Good Copy Bad Copy (2007)/Good Copy Bad Copy 10. How do I configure Emby Server and Clients on Windows to give same quality playback as when playing direct from the filesytem? On our laptops we generally get better quality driving Windows Explorer to \\emby-server\media\show.mkv (or .flv or ...) and playing with VLC than we do pointing a browser (Firefox, Chrome) at http://emby-server:8096/. While playing a show in browser clicking the cog icon at top right sometimes shows "Direct" as a playback option and sometimes not. Sometimes the max rate is "720p - 10 Mbps" and sometimes "720p - 8 Mbps". (Our tv is 720p so we don't usually store videos of greater resolution). Sometimes even playing a 480p video in through Emby is noticeably more grainy than VLC direct (played minutes apart, with no difference in ambient network conditions). The server is 100mbit wired ethernet to the wifi router. while the clients are WiFi (mixed 11/54Mbps). So it's not a great network, but still shouldn't Emby at least be able to match VLC? And if not, how to add an additional "play" button to launch VLC via "file://emby-server/media/show.mkv" file association?
  11. What can I say here... well its great the menus are clean and simple, in line with the fire TV sticks own so users are at home straight away Its fast and responsive and looks good on the screen But it is limited to 3GPP (.3gp) and MPEG-4 (.mp4) (video anyway) (source - https://developer.am...specifications) Any other video needs to be transcoded and when you want to watch 1080p video with 7.1 sound not even my server can do it just maxs out the CPU My server is a Fujitsu Primergy MX130 S2 2 CPU x 2.99 Ghz 32GB of RAM If you have android TV or the fire TV (not stick) then you can install VLC and Emby can use it to play other media with out the need to transcode, I am told this works wonderfully (not yet seen it first hand) But at the moment no VLC for fire TV stick so no real use for this app its such a shame as the app is great and I was about to buy a Fire TV stick for all my rooms and replace my old Windows 7 Media Centre hosts If any one knows of a way around this I would grateful for the information and would update this straight away
  12. Transcoded audio sounds wrong, almost like reverse stereo. I can't really explain it. This happened before a long time ago on 3.0.5238.39498, and it went away with an update. I just noticed that its doing it again on 3.0.5724.3 I don't want to make a new video, so I will link my old one. I just tested the video file featured in my example clip and it's back to sounding wrong. See video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vIiFOblQ6UA Media info for the source file that was demonstrated in the video I linked - as detected by media-browser: (avi) <streamdetails> <video> <codec>mpeg4</codec> <micodec>mpeg4</micodec> <bitrate>826041</bitrate> <width>624</width> <height>352</height> <aspect>16:9</aspect> <aspectratio>16:9</aspectratio> <framerate>23.97602</framerate> <scantype>progressive</scantype> <default>False</default> <forced>False</forced> <duration>49</duration> <durationinseconds>2951</durationinseconds> </video> <audio> <codec>mp3</codec> <micodec>mp3</micodec> <bitrate>128000</bitrate> <scantype>progressive</scantype> <channels>2</channels> <samplingrate>48000</samplingrate> <default>False</default> <forced>False</forced> </audio> </streamdetails> </fileinfo> Media info for the video I tried to play today that had the same audio issue: (mkv) <streamdetails> <video> <codec>h264</codec> <micodec>h264</micodec> <bitrate>3451213</bitrate> <width>1280</width> <height>720</height> <aspect>16:9</aspect> <aspectratio>16:9</aspectratio> <framerate>23.97602</framerate> <scantype>progressive</scantype> <default>True</default> <forced>False</forced> <duration>21</duration> <durationinseconds>1277</durationinseconds> </video> <audio> <codec>aac</codec> <micodec>aac</micodec> <language>eng</language> <scantype>progressive</scantype> <channels>2</channels> <samplingrate>48000</samplingrate> <default>True</default> <forced>False</forced> </audio> As you can see, there's no correlation between the two formats. However, some video files exhibit this issue while others do not. All play fine from WMP/VLC/MPCHC/Direct Playback in chrome.
  13. I previosly posted this as a question in the thread for evolving the folder sync plugin but I will post here also as an official feature request. http://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/19887-help-emby-sync-evolve/page-3&do=findComment&comment=218415 I would like to see either the folder sync plugin or maybe some separeted function that would allow me to do the following: specify a folder for incoming media eg. movies and episodes specify one or several transcoding settings according to my preference have the funtion transcode the media and then move it into my media collection a select option to specify if i want to remove the original or archive it in some other location This would let me make sure that I always have my media collection in a uniformed state. With optimal configuration I could avoid most on-the-fly transcoding. I am using the folder sync plugin for this purpose today by transcoding all new arrivals to an external drive and then manually moving them back into my media collection and removing the originals. The proposed change would allow me to completely automate this. P.S Thanks to all developers involved in the projects involving Emby. The work you done so far is amazing.

    Transcode audio only

Can we add a video pass thru option to the transcode settings? I have a roku directly connected to a TV that doesnt support DTS/DD, which unfortunately means that everything that doesnt have 2 channel audio is being transcoded. Which is virtually everything, putting my server under massive strain. If we had video pass thru and the transcoder was only downmixing the audio then I wouldnt need to use folder sync to pre-transcode everything (which is great having the option, but a bit painful).

    New transcoding seems much worse

Downloaded Emby Server 3.0.5621 Beta yesterday afternoon. There is supposed to be a new transcoding method that reduces CPU usage but it is providing poor results compared with the previous version, for me at least--when I'm watching movies that are transcoded now there are artifacts that come and go throughout the entire video which was not an issue before the server update. The CPU usage is about 30% and nothing else is running but the transcode process is no longer seamless like it was before yesterday's update.

To transcode or not to transcode

Hi everybody, I am running: - Emby Server version 3.0.5572.0 - Roku app version 1.87 (but I also bought Android, Windows 8 and ios apps) My Roku 3 outputs its HDMI content to a 7.2 amp with DD (AC3) and DTS support. The Roku is, thus, configured in order to pass-through audio streams to be decoded by the amp. It occurs, though, that when various movies (MKVs with DTS audio streams) are played, I get no "Direct play" but, instead, a transcoded stream. I am unable to realize why the app decides to translate these movies but this result on a big loss (surround audio is reduced to stereo). On the effort to understand why these movies are translated, I remembered this Roku still has a previous version of the MediaBrowser app (1.17.6). To my surprise this old version not only plays these files directly (thus correctly passing through audio streams) but also supports subtitles playing all these "suspect" files gracefully. I understand Emby's development efforts are not focused on the Roku app on this moment. I am personally waiting for a long time for just a test and validation on this other issue. Even though, I ask for some attention to this platform/app. Though I get excited about Emby's new features, I have basic problems which are almost preventing me to use Emby on my central home theater room. I can quickly send logs, mediainfo or any other info required to understand this problem's scenario (it is even possible to directly connect to my server) but I would like it very much to use latest Emby's Roku app version to watch all my movies… Thanks for the attention,

Subtitles out of sync on transcoded media

I have two Rokus 3 both running version 1.78. One is connected to a 7.1 amp and it accordingly passes DTS/AC3 streams to the amp. It, thus exhibits a "direct play" on almost all MKVs. The second one is directly connected to a TV set. It transcodes the same MKVs that the other plays directly. As they are both configured to the maximum 20MHz bitstream I regard this transcoding relates to the sound stream. Problem is that subtitles "arrive too early" on this second Roku. The same movies that shows correct subtitle sync on the first Roku, show them two seconds early on this device. I got the impression server gets delayed by initiating the transcode process but the subtitles are served to the device just as the movie were not transcoded. I made some additional tests playing/transcoding the same movies to both the web and android clients but was unable to reproduce the behavior. Though I am not certain, It seems this behavior started with the last app update (1.78). Server version is 3.0.5490.2 Thanks for any advice,

    Stopping playback doesn't

HI, Was just doing some testing for other purposes and have found that terminating playback via the app does not really terminate everything. Was testing out some 3D playback that ended up getting transcoding and when I hit the stop button the app return to the movie details screen and then I backed out of the app. When looking at the MBS Server details page it does not appear that anything is still being transcoded, but when I look at my external USB drive caddie I can see that the drive is still active. As well, the is still an ffmpeg process running on the server. This has happen three times now today, twice from the same TV and once from a Samsung BD Player that has the app installed on it Not sure if the server and transcoding logs will help, but I attached them anyway Cheers CrashKelly EDIT: Just testing direct streaming and that functions as it should transcode-c9469d48-56ed-42a4-8772-7798efaf2a26.txt server-63557197753.txt server-63557195903.txt
  19. I unfortunately have this issue quit frequently. While watching a movie all is going well, and then the movie just ends. It is as if it thinks it has reached the end of the movie, as the progress is lost. I can then just go to the scene's and continue watching the rest of the movie with no issue, so not a problem with the files as far as I can tell. Server ver: 3.0.5464.40000 Watching in web client on Xbox one.
  20. Hi all, I was wondering about the plugin for xbmc. So xbmc can use mediabrowser3 as a backend for xbmc, does it offer transcoding on the fly? and how is the media shared between mb3 and xbmc, is it upnp/multicast? I'm searching for a non-upnp/multicast solution that supports transcoding on the fly and can be a media source for xbmc. thx in advance!!

    Channels Transcoding

I just recently started playing with the channels. I have been using XBMC for years, but as I have been moving to XBMB3C, I thought that I would experiment with using MB3's TWIT and Revision 3 channels instead of the XBMC/Kodi add-ons. As I experimented, I noticed that the video playback was listed in XBMB3C as transcoding. Quick check of my server confirmed it. Thinking it might be an XBMB3C thing, I switched over to MB Theater and discovered the same thing: all channels video is being transcoded. I can't speak to the video in all of the channels, but I know that the Revision 3 feeds are all mp4, so how why would it need to be transcoded for XBMB3C? Is there a way to force direct play for channels, or do I need to make a profile for XBMC, or is transcoding just the way it has to be? Thanks for any help or feedback anyone can offer.
  22. I rebuilt my entire server this is a fresh install of Win 7. MB Server 3.0.5416.0 / Media Browser for Roku 1.64 External Roku connects and plays content fine, even though the server reports the user is constantly disconnecting/reconnecting. It also appears that its just dumping a bunch of tiny 15-20 sec transcode clips, the directory is currently sitting at about 700 files. I have my transcode location set to a specific path for server. Help would be appreciated to address this issue. Server Log Transcode Log
  23. I have started to play around with the live TV element of MB using NextPVR as the back-end (I don't have Windows Media Centre so I understand this means I can't use ServerWMC?). Everything seems to work reasonably well, however I noticed that when using the MB Theatre application (streaming rate set as 15mbps) the content is always transcoded (both SD MPEG2 and HD h264) - Since we are streaming to a pretty powerful machine with all LAV filters installed, why do we have to transcode the file first? M

    Scalabity question

Yes often times we direct stream the file through the server api, which as far as the client is concerned is identical to file playback through the LAN. Then other times we just do a container swap, keeping the audio/video in their original forms but just changing the container from say, mkv to mp4. These techniques are cheap and will scale to a large number of people easily.
  25. Hi, I've been using XBOX 360 as an extender and now i'm having pause/resume/skip issues. It seems that only transcoded files from server are unable to pause or skip. When I try it I receive an error and have to start from beginning. But when files are "Direct Playing" pause/skip.. works Do you have any solution to my problem? Reg, Arni Thor
