Hello , I have a windows Emby server which is supposed to provide the video content to ios and android users (80% ios and 20% android). ios user use Safari and android user use chrome to get access to server. The PC that I`m using has the Intel Core i7 8th Gen with 16DDR4 and NVME SDD and no GPU. My question is , what is the best Video format/codec to use to make the least transcoding and smooth play for both Safari and chrome users. I already tried MKV/MP4 with H264 and AAC 5.1-AC3 audio codec. AAC is not working well with chrome and I had to convert it to AC3 and video pause randomly. I would like to get your opinion to setup my Emby server and prepare my video content to make them easy for server. Thank you.

Convert AAC 5.1 to AC3 5.1 on the CLIENT side rather than the SERVER?
unrais posted a topic in Android TV / Fire TV
Hey, I have a Sonos Beam 5.1 setup & Nvidia shield. The Beam doesn't support AAC 5.1, so I need to use the 'transcode unsupported audio' option inside of the Emby App. However, I've noticed that this forces it to transcode on the server side, while other players like Kodi can easily transcode it on the fly on the client side. Is there a way to convert AAC 5.1 to AC3 5.1 on the client side of the Emby app instead? Would setting it to use an external player work? -
Hello, I have an odd one and I do not think it is emby directly. Read to the end.... I'm encoding some movies into HEVC using Hardware Acceleration. I decided to have two audio tracks (1. Original Audio Passthru, 2. AAC Track @ 960K). When I view the data in emby the second AAC audio track is wrong. It is being reported as 320K. So I figured maybe its the file itself. Here is the audio mediaInfo on the file. Perhaps it is the FFmpeg commands I am using for the audio. This is the main list of commands I have come up with for encoding HEVC with two audio tracks. Mind you the titles and names of the metadata for the audio tracks can change from title to title. I am not really sure why the second audio track is being mis-read. ffmpeg -y -vsync 0 -hwaccel cuda -i "inputFile.mkv" // First Audio Track (Source) Commands -map 0:v -map 0:a:0? -c:a:0 copy -metadata:s:1 title="Surround 5.1 Track" -metadata:s:1 handler="Surround 5.1 Track" -metadata:s:1 language=eng // Second Audio Track (AAC) Commands -map 0:a:0? -c:a:1 aac -metadata:s:2 title="AAC Track" -metadata:s:2 handler="AAC Track" -metadata:s:2 language=eng -b:2 960K -ac:2 6 -filter:2 aformat=channel_layouts=6.0

I am having trouble playing files encoded using AAC5.1 in Roku. Roku ultra simply down mix it to stereo and hence the surround sound is lost. I read some prior articles discussing about an option to transcode AAC to AC3 if 5.1 channel is present. Is that feature supported? I am using Emby for little over a year and always had this issue with no solution. (Roku Ultra #4660) https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/54801-roku-premier-and-aac-51/ I recently installed Plex and it does the transcoding automatically for AAC5.1 audio for Roku Ultra. Just wanted to know if I am missing out some config settings that prevents me from doing the same through Emby. Thanks in advance.

Why transcode video when only audio can't be DirecStreamed?
Alefielm posted a topic in General/Windows
Hi, I'm trying to play this from Emby 4.4.0.40 Linux to Chromecast ultra using the Android app. When paying it says is transcoding because of the unsupported audio (i'ts ok, Chromecast doesn't support AAC 5.1), my question is, why is Emby transcoding the video too to x264? My server is on a RaspberryPi, so I try to get versions that doesn't need video encoding/conversion, so far I am streaming 4k 5.1 without problems. Is there any configuration to force emby to transcode only the audio whem the problem is audio? I hope that can be achieved with a lot less cpu power than converting video too. Thank you! I have another wish. Get better audio quality for audio tracks by using . They're already good but in terms of quality not the best out there. Would it be possible to utilize fdk-aac for the transcoder? Or even better, qaac.

Years ago I used the Shark007 codecs and would configure AC3 filter to convert all my AAC 5.1 audio tracks to AC3 5.1. These days I'm using LAV filters (like most people here I expect) and I hadn't really considered what was happening with my older videos that have AAC multi-channel audio track (all my new stuff is DD or DTS). So, it appears that it just gets output as 2 channel PCM - does anyone know how to configure the LAV Audio Decoder to enable 5.1 PCM? Or do I have to resort to AC3 filter again?

Hi folks, Since a few days ago we've noticed the audio sometimes cuts out on our Chromecast. I've done some testing and found the following: It only cuts out when transcoding and the audio is mapped to AAC, MP3 works fine. It will cut out within the first few minutes. Usually between 1 and 3 minutes. Stopping and restarting playback fixes the problem for a few more minutes until it cuts out again. I've rolled back the server version to a time I knew it worked OK yet the problem remains. Can anyone replicate this problem for me, just so I know I'm not going crazy? Cheers,

1080p AAC playback problem on Android 5.5 (Crash due to VLC audio Settings?)
xyph posted a topic in Android
Hi, I accidentally misposted this in the Android TV forum - apparently it is supposed to be in the android mobile forum. I am SO looking forward to having a functional Emby experience... (after many, many frustrations) and appreciate advice/assistance. I recently posted a string of problems related to an AsusStor NAS running server. Most were solved by dropping the hope of running Emby on this device. Now I have it running on Windows and have a great experience with android apps and web apps - except on ONE problematic android set top box! The errors are very repeatable - but I cant grasp what might be the problem. GOOD: Old Set Top Box (AcRyan Veolo 4k) connected via HDMI to Old HD samsung TV 1. Go to youtube - play random video: Result: Video + sound 2. Go to emby (latest via play store)- play SD PCM video: Result video + sound 3. Still in Emby - play 1080p AAC video: Result video + sound 4. Go back to youtube or any other device and play stuff: Result: video+sound GOOD: Playback on Galaxy Note 5 emby app (latest via play store) 1. Go to youtube - play random video: Result: Video + sound 2. Go to emby - play SD PCM video: Result video + sound 3. Still in Emby - play 1080p AAC video: Result video + sound 4. Still in Emby - play 1080p AAC video: Result - EITHER: VIDEO plays for 2 secs then CRASH OR: VIDEO plays for a while with NO SOUND 4. Go back to youtube or any other app and play stuff: Result: Video but NO SOUND *** Only way to get sound back is to reboot android box. *Tried disconnecting/reconnecting HDMI (incase a handshaking issue) - no effect *Tried setting sound output to HDMI (vs Auto) in android tv settings - no effect *Tried playback via Kodi (using Emby plugin) of 1080p+AAC results in video not playing back Veolo Specs: working 4k version problematic 4KPlus version Processor 1.8Ghz ARM A17 2Ghz ARM A53 Ram 2GB DDR3 2GB DDR3 Android 4.4 KitKat 5.1 Lollipop Resolution 1080p 2160P@30hz I tried a factory reset of the box - then fresh install of emby. Same result. The device techs are willing to help but need something they can reproduce - so playback from my emby server is not an option from their service centre. NB - when exploring issues with the AsusStor NAS I installed Plex server/app of this set top box. Plex could stream the same file without issues, and I can view the same files on other emby android apps without issue... so I'm assuming its something Emby App Related... Since other android devices work, I assume it is not likely to be server related. NEW: It looks like Emby uses VLC to playback videos - I can REPRODUCE the crash/sound issue in VLC player as well! But in VLC I can SOLVE the problem: Changing a VLC audio setting however allows everything to playback just FINE in VLC - NO crash, no sound outages. I Need to change the Audio Output setting from 'AudioTrack' (which crashed or kills all further sound on the device until a reboot) to 'Open SL ES' (See attached photo of VLC settings) I cannot find a way to make this change in Emby though - so still playback in Emby effectively kills the device. I downloaded one of the sample MKV files and I can play back the MKV file (with sound, without crashes) in both of the other media players installed on the device! (Stock, and something else that came preinstalled (MX player if I recall) NEW: LOGS Of SERVER and of APP are uploaded - App logs show everything from startup to playing SD file to playing HD AAC file and CRASH. Server logs contain all sorts of other stuff - but rather than try to filter to save somebody time - and then have no meaningful response because I filtered something important - I am uploading the full days' log up to the above mentioned crash. To be clear - the uploaded logs are of the PROBLEMATIC device/server. If my non-technical descriptions are unclear please use the information in the LOGS to clarify. Any suggestions or detailed recommendations very welcome. Its been a few weeks now that I keep trying different combinations of ostensibly supported platforms and run into endless problems. I am about to give up on Emby completely - No home theatre solution should be this difficult to get working Especially not something paid. Thanks! X ServerLog.txt Android5.5MBApp.log -
Hello, so first here is my configuration : Emby 3.0.8300.0 myKodi 17 Krypton Beta 3 Emby for Kodi Beta 1.0.5 All that on a QNAP 253A to HDMI amp. I understand that my problem maybe comes from the Beta combo Kodi 17 x Emby for Kodi but maybe it's something else I'm missing. First of all I started by installing Kodi 17 without Emby, with my library on the same server and everything was working perfectly with audio passthrough enabled, the 5.1 sounds was working well either in AC3, DTS or AAC5.1 (I installed the last beta Kodi version because I have a lot of film in H265 and it's the only one that supports it perfectly for the moment). And so I decided to centralize all my library through Emby to manage it more easily from my laptop. I've installed the last version of Emby on my QNAP server who works nicely, and the last beta Emby for Kodi add-on finally (cause it's the only one that works on Kodi 17). I didn't have any issue to sync everything, all my films appear great in Kodi. I configured the playback in the Emby add-on options in native path and with no transcode option activated. And there my problem comes: I can play all the video really fine (H.264, H.265) with the audio passthrough in AAC 2.0 but when I play a AAC 5.1 file the back speakers have the same sound coming from the front speakers. And when I try to play AC3 or DTS file it's worst and no sound comes out at all. I tried to deactivate the audio passthrough and the sound is back but with no proper decoding of the 5.1 obviously. I don't know what to do, I only know that the problem comes from the sync with the Emby library because it was working well before I decided to use the Emby add-on, when I had my files directly linked to Kodi. Anyone can help me ? Thanks so much!

Live TV - Additional audio track aac/ac3 option on remuxing recordings
mlongpre posted a topic in Feature Requests
Hello there Emby Team, Using my HDHomerun Extend, the option to "Automatically convert recordings to a streaming friendly format" used with the option "Preserve original audio when converting recordings (when possible)" creates a file, either mp4 or mkv, with the original ac3 (dolby digital) audio track. This file usually needs transcoding if sending to a player without ac3 capabilities. What I'm proposing is what I used to do for my AppleTV/iOS files. Basically have two audio tracks in the file. One being a converted aac 2-channel track as well as the original ac3 track from the HDHomerun. That way we can maybe avoid some transcoding as the server would choose which audio track to play based on the output capabilities? If ac3 capable, choose the ac3 track, if not ac3 compatible like on web browsers, ios and some players, choose the 2-ch aac track. Does this sound like a possible feature? Thanks for your time. Marc -
Can someone show me how to do this, if possible.... All my movies are in an MP4 container with track 1: H.264 video, track 2: 2-ch AAC audio and track 3: 6-ch AC3 audio. The second audio track (track 3) is set as default. The reason my files are setup like this is because when I download some of these files to my iPad or iPhone the first audio track must be AAC to play correctly, but I have the AC3 track set as default because I want the AC3 track to bitstream to my AVR to play surround sound when I watch a movie on my HTPC. When I call up a movie on the Emby iOS app, the app causes the server to transcode the file because it plays the default AC3 audio file. However, when I manually switch to the 2-ch AAC track the server stops transcoding and the file direct streams (I believe?) to the iOS app. [i believe this is true because the CPU usage goes way down when I select the AAC track] I have "Play default audio track regardless of language" NOT checked. Is there a setting in the Emby Server or Emby iOS App that will say "hey, if the iOS app is calling up an MP4 file, I should play the compatible AAC audio track and not transcode an unsupported audio track because obviously I am on an Apple device!"?

Hello everybody, After updating to the latest iPhone version, I am receiving the below error (within and outside my network as well) when I try to play any mp4 movie that contains an 5.1 AAC audio. To give you an idea of my setup, I have converted all my movies to mp4 h264 and aac 5.1 so I can use the direct play feature with no problem. When I access my movies within the Samsung app on my TV, everything is working ok but from the iPhone it only allows me to playback aac 2.0 audio channel videos. Previously I was able of course to stream 5.1 in my iPhone without a problem. Naturally I am not going to add to every single film I have an additional 2 channel aac, as I prefer 5.1 cause of my home theatre system. I just need to be able to play them from my iphone as well (even though it won't be a real 5.1 through the phone, but that doesn't bother me). Strange thing is that my nexus tablet works fine with aac 5.1 audio so there must be something wrong with the iPhone app. Also to mention, I have the "allow video playback that requires transcoding" UNSELECTED as I had it before and that is why I have converted everything to mp4 and aac to begin with (meaning avoid transcoding as much as possible). Again, I had no issue previously and it still works with my android tablet so I can only thing that this is the iPhone's app bug. When I ticked back the transcoding option just to see what happens, I have encountered the "transcoding continues on server" issue from another thread below: http://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/28678-transcoding-contines-on-server-after-you-stop-video-on-ios/ so I really don't want to use that feature in any case if possible. Is there something I can do, to manually fix my 5.1 audio issue or I need to wait for another update? Sorry for the long message. Thanks in advance, George

Hey guys! Really nice work you have done so far! I would like to play my music (a lot of it is encoded as m4a) with the webinterface and without transcoding (my nas is not fast enought) Is it possible to implement this in a feature Release? Greets, 1ch_h4lt

Emby Version 3.0.5621.4 I've noticed that any of my MKV/MP4/AVI files that have AAC audio seem to be transcoding when I play them on my xbox one. I find this odd because it's an AAC codec being transcoded back into AAC but with out 5.1 output. I thought the xbox one handles aac audio. I'm using default profiles for the server. Is this just a bug or is there something I need to fix? These shouldn't need transcoding, right? I've attached two of my logs from transcodes I don't believe should be transcoding at all. The second is of an MP4 file not an MKV however if I put it into an MKV container and attempt to play it on the xbox one, it will transcode it. avi file.txt mp4 file.txt

Sorry for questions about “old technology” but my extender has its usefulness for now. Problem: My HP x280n Media Center Extender (MCE) will not play MP4 container AAC audio (2.0 or 5.1) using Media Browser 3 server (MB3) and Media Browser Classic (MBC) in Win7 Media Center. MP4 containers with a range of audio codecs are supported (see above). Tried Troubleshooting: PC Server tested: MP4 container files play audio/video in Media Browser Web Client , Media Player 12, Media Center Pictures/Videos and in MBC. HP Extender tested: The extender has a local, removable HDD and Wi-Fi & Wired network connections (I'm using wired). A full range of MP4 files play audio/video both from the local HDD and networked NAS disk in the basic extender interface (not Media Center). In the Media Center interface the MP4 video plays beautifully from the PC Server, however no audio will play in either the Pictures/Videos section or from MBC. In the Media Center interface in either the Pictures/Videos section or from MBC, both audio & video play beautifully for .avi, .ts. I have not installed LAV filters so I do not play MKV over the extender. There should be some way to set up MBT/LAV/Reclock to transcode multichannel AAC to 5.1 LPCM and pass on via hdmi, that the receiver will understand.
