Hardware for Emby (and other servers) ESXi Vs Docker - Performance
ScottRTL posted a topic in Hardware
Hi Everyone, sorry for the long-winded post: I have approximately, 5 remote users that may be transcoding at any given time, plus 3 possible direct streams in my house, then mobile phone/tablet usage, maybe a couple at a time max (but rare, at least for now) I know there are a lot of posts where people are asking what kind of server to use, and if their server is good enough, my question(s) are different. First I will give an idea of my previous servers so you can see where I have been, so we can understand better, where I would like to go: 1.) I started with a Drobo FS (for Media) with single drive redundancy, and a Dell Poweredge R610 running a Plex server (this worked well for a few years), but I did need to rebuild Plex now and again, and setup all my coverart/other metadata a few times. (not fun). 2.) I moved to a Drobo 5N (with a cache drive) I initially tried the Plex server built into the Drobo 5N, but the server was too slow, so I went back to the Dell and used the Drobo just for the Media 3.) I lost all the Drobo files because a second drive failed during a rebuild. rip. So I moved to a Synology DS1815+ (maxed the RAM on it, 2 drive redundancy) I upgraded my Plex server to an HP DL360 G6 with 128 GB RAM and 2x Xeon 5650 (got it for cheap through my work) Eventually I lost all my metadata (not media) on Plex because a SAS drive failed. 4.) I created an iSCSI LUN on my Synology and put Plex on that (so I don't have to worry about losing the VMs/MetaData), tried that for a while, but it was too slow. (At this point I decided to switch from Plex to Emby for features as well) 5.) So FINALLY (sorry for the long post again) I ended up with my DL360 running ESXi, with an Emby VM, and a seperate torrent VM (always behind VPN). Basiclly, The DL360 isn't working anymore, it is currently in my garage, and during the summer, it sounds like a jet taking off, and the fans die often. The only place I can move it is the basement, and that doesn't fit there (it's GIANT), so I need to build a PC, and I figured I would futureproof a bit, and move away from enterprise to avoid the expensive replacement equipment. (Fans, and SAS drives). I am not sure if I should continue on the ESXi route (compatibility with non-enterprise parts seems to be annoying, and the VMWare matrix is a nightmare, at least to me), or maybe run something like FreeNAS or UnRAID (Emby Container). I don't want to go the UnRAID/FreeNAS route, only to find out that I have taken a step-back in performance (like the Drobo and the Synology server application was). However, I do like the idea of getting four M.2 500GB NVMe drives running the OS, so I never have to worry again about losing my VMs(or containers)/metadata. OR just install a linux server OS, then run all my servers as containers on that. I see that I can set a GPU to passthrough to an Emby container in UnRAID, and get GPU transcoding. So that seems like a perk. So, I am curious what everyone thinks about potential hardware setup, and what my best option may be for the OS to take advantage of said hardware. I am putting this post in hardware, because the hardware I am buying is going to change depending on what OS(s) can take advantage of it (give best performance). When it's all said and done, I'll want a full replacement for the Emby Server (currently ESXi VM) and my torrent server (ESXi VM) and a couple other servers (Home assistant, Minecraft, whatever else I am playing with). With the best possible performance. How much RAM do you think? (like 32 or 64 DDR4 will be way faster than the 128GB that I hardly use currently) Intel CPU (probably, right?), Nvdia Video card seems to be a good choice (around 2070 looks fine)...? RAID on SSD or NVMe, at the OS level? Is this just going ridiculously overkill? Can anyone help with some ideas please? I would really appreciate any insight to help me make some decisions before it starts getting too hot in the garage. Thank you! -
Hello, I know this is a common issue from what I've read. Various cases but none seem like mine. Had Emby running on a TrueNAS box working fine for ages, installed via truenas plugin. I upgraded my heatsink and that's when the issue started weirdly enough. ""No compatible streams are currently available. Please try again later or contact your system administrator for details." I get this when I try to play anything. I've rebuild the Jail a few times and I've done a ton of reading, including logs, but I have no clue. My media files play fine from various devices via the nas share Emby is just a jail so it's not accessing files over LAN. I've attached my log, but I see no errors that even give me a clue. Any help is appreciated sirs ffmpeg-transcode-f57edcf6-bbb1-437d-89e2-2e9e18006075_1.txt

I am running Emby on a FreeNAS server and yesterday, I went to watch a movie and when it started, I noticed the Emby player controls were at the top of the page. I clicked on the full screen button and it did not work. So I tried all the buttons including the volume slide bar and mute function. None of them worked. I opened Emby in Microsoft Edge and everything works as it should. Was there a recent Chrome update that would have caused this and if so does anyone know of a fix? I have attached a screen shot of the top of the Chrome browser.

So new but happy user of emby now today something odd. When playing a movie and skipping the intro it stalled, As in not responding complete hookup it wil take a minute orso and i can get back onto the server. Now interestingly enough there is no error none nada 0. It look simulair to: https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/72236-emby-stops-during-playback/ So logs included although i doubt they are helpful it does seem to be related to remux ? Most plays are directstream. embyserver.txt ffmpeg-remux-2baf661c-36e8-4ae1-b61a-a4b79208d1d2_1.txt

Since yesterday the Webserver of my emby instance keeps crashing and I don't know why. I'm using the community Plugin on FreeNas atm. Installed is Version 4.3.1.0 I don't find a valid reason in the server logs for why it suddently started crashing... and decided to simply use that moment to move to a new jail with the offical Plugin on Version 4.4.3.0 installed, but I can't find a way to force trigger a Server Backup using the Server Backup plugin. I don't wanna wait 12+ hours to maybe get a backup. Isn't there a trigger button for that and if not, why? (Yes I am premiere user) I attached the Server Log, maybe you see the crash reason (but I'd prefer just migrating to a new Jail) embyserver.txt

Hi Chaps I'm thinking to get this to get rid of my 10+ year old synology nas and nuc to run freenas on it podomenatly to run emby and some other small apps like pi-hole etc https://www.ebuyer.com/863695-hpe-proliant-gen10-amd-opteron-quad-core-4-core-1-80-ghz-8-gb-p07203-421 any this any good.. shouldn't be doing more than 2 streams at the same time and mostly will be direct streaming. what are your opinion on this. I already have quite a lont of 2tb hard drives which are still in fairy decent condition

The normal Network connection works without issues internal and external. I can reach the server from the internet so the pure connection shouldn't be the problem.

I am new to Emby, and I have just installed it in a FreeNAS system. Everything went smoothly. I love the interface. I have no problems with clients on Mac, iPad or iPhone. However, when I try to play on a Marantz SR6010, I can only play music. Photos take over 10 seconds to load, and movies just never play - the best I get is a cover picture of the movie but playback never starts. The same thing happens whether I access the server directly from the Marantz, or when I access from the iPad client and then choose "play to" Marantz from the iPad app. The server and the Marantz are in the same ethernet. I never tinkered with any settings. After the Emby server was installed, the Marantz saw it without me having to set anything up. Are there any settings I am missing? Is the problem in my server, the network or the Marantz? Mac and iPad, where playback is not a problem, are on WiFi and the Marantz is on ethernet, but if anything, ethernet should be faster/more reliable?

Hello, any one running emby on freenas jail tried to make the update to Emby 4.3.x.x Or Emby 4.4.x.x. I tried and I was not able to play any content, all of them returned a invalid content file. I ended you rolling back to 4.2.x.x. Any one with sucesse? I downloaded with this. Thank You

Hello, I've been using FreeNAS on windows for a couple of years now and a few days ago a bit the bullet and built a NAS with FreeNAS. I went the plugin route for emby and everything has been working fine, that is until I tried to fast forward with my Kodi using the Companion. The image just went to black and stopped playing altogether. Now here's the kicker, I'm not having problems when transcoding the videos, it only happens if I have play a video and the bitrate is over 10Mbps. To bypass this issue, I've had to make it so that the playback forces a transcode using 1080p 10mbps on the local network. Since it doesn't happen when transcoding, I just have it to auto when playing from the internet, I'm already forcing a max of 8Mbps from outside connections. Any idea on why this would be happening?

Hello. Thanks for Emby! I've been a Premiere subscriber for several months while using it for Video. However, I added a small music library today, and the scanning got stuck around 87%. I have a samsung smart tv and a denon avr-e300 home theater receiver that both are DLNA ready. I have emby server installed on a FREENAS server with a static IP. The Server, TV and receiver are all networked and have Static IPs. Emby works beautifully on all my devices using the webserver IP except on the DLNA devices. It says the video files are music files, then error out when I try to play them. I have tried .mkv and .mp4. What other file type should I use?

Hi All Hoping for some help with this issue. I've investigated playback errors in the past, but don't seem to get anything helpful from the log this time. FreeNAS 11.2-U3 with Emby server in a jail. Created a new jail and installed Emby following official instructions for 4.0.2.0 here: https://emby.media/freebsd-server.html I can browse to the webUI and play fine in Chrome browser on laptop, but LG TV throws an error on any video: Playback Error No compatible streams are currently available. Please try again later or contact your system administrator for details. [LG] webOS TV OLED55C8PLA - software version 04.10.31 Emby TV app is up to date I can't spot anything in the log - attached. Any help greatly appreciated!

Hello Everybody, I'm new to this forum so excuse me if I'm in the wrong sub thread. I recently installed a emby Plugin on FreeNAS 11.2 (Version 4.0.2.0) to administer my whole media collection which consist of Movies, TV shows, music and games. In an article I found on the web (https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/16380-gamebrowser-guide/) I found out that you can even administer Windows games. This brings me to my question(s): 1. Can you administer Windows games on FreeNAS ? The Gamebrowser Plugin (as wirtten in the mentioned article above) just says that Windows Games can only be run through Emby Classic - but I don't really know what that is and if it is available on a FreeNAS Server 2. Is there any possibility to "stream" my Games from my FreeNAS Server to my local machine ? I thought that the Game Files are stored on my NAS and the Hardware Resources like GPU and CPU are used from my local Windows machine. Thanks for you help.

Very much a NOOB. I am trying out Emby and Plex on a FreeNAS setup. I used the new Emby plugin (thank you!) Everything runs except: With Emby I can only put SMB shares for Windows into the Library: \\FREENAS\FN-Media\Movies Yet with Plex I can put the jail folders into its libraries: \\FreeNAS\jails\plex\Movies I understand this is not correct and I should be putting the Emby jail folders into its libraries. \\FREENAS\FN-Media\Movies \\192.168.1.219\jails\emby_1\Movies Also tried using // vice \ since I am on windows. When I try this I get: "There was an error adding the media path. Please ensure path is valid and Emby Server Process has access to that location" The jail folders are owned by user root, group wheel. I have made a user emby and assigned it to the group wheel. This user has the same ID as the user emby inside the jail (983). Can't find the solution to this in any post I have seen.

LGTV app is not connection to freenas emby version 3.3.1.0 since recent upgrade
kmays posted a topic in LG Smart TV
Since the recent LG OLED TV app upgrade, Im not able to connect from the app to emby 3.3.1.0 ( latest plugin available ) Its a disappointment that an upgrade broke it, and the fact that there is no upgrades from freenas for a while. If anyone can help, will be appreciated. Thanks in advance. -
put together a new freenas (11.2)...installed emby...and, everyting is working fine except for majority (approx. 98%) of my mkv files being seen and played back as mpg files. along with the mkv files, not all, but some of my mp4 files are being treated/seen as mpg files. now playing videos via the webapp is fine, and it's not my concern. however, playing thru DLNA is a different story. any ideas as what i can do to alleviate this issue. i mean, i had it on my old build, too, but never really tried to solve this problem. now, i need to because the samsung emby is giving me an error (this will be another post so i'm not gonna focus it on here). i have an anime file: [FFF] Hagure Yuusha no Estetica - 01 [bD][1080p-FLAC][73F7748E].mkv. when i look and play this file on my samsung tv, it sees it as an mpg file; and, i assume, emby transcode it as such to the tv. any help and reply is greatly appreciated. thank you!

hey all, thx for reading. i have freenas jail running emby server 4.0.0.2, and has been running somewhat happily for some time. im running out of room on the freenas and also have no spare sata connector on the mb, so, i used the hdds from my older nas setup, and booted up another nix type nas OS to use the extra sata and storage. here is my current problem, emby under freenas(freebsd) cannot access the smb or nfs shares unless they seem to be exposed to the current jail. For the love of god, ive tried setting up mount and mount_smbfs, but say "not permitted" emby to use smb or nfs share on another pc is what im basically asking. many thx in advance, D

Hello everybody! I'll try to keep it short and sweet. Right now, I'm running v3.6.0.81_beta (will upgrade soon to v4) on a headless Fedora 27 box with 4GB of RAM and a dual-core AMD A4-3300 APU on a WD HDD. It also leverages OpenLDAP running on another FreeBSD box on my network for authentication. Have used the setup for years; I try to keep the boxes physically clean and the setup is still running like a champ. Using a couple of external USB 3.0 drives for backup. It ain't pretty, but it works. Sometimes I have issues with the Android app spinning when trying to play music on my Pixel 2 phone or buffering over WiFi when playing a movie on my Fire TV Cube app (which results in some herky-jerkiness). Those instances are relatively rare, though although the latter issue is nonetheless more annoying. I am thinking that may be due to streaming higher-resolution movies over WiFi (ideal vs real world transfer speeds, essentially a bandwith issue and not a system resource issue?). Fast-forward to today, and I have just procured a bona-fide workstation (Dell Precision T3400, Core 2 Duo) that I am converting to (Free)NAS with 8GB ECC RAM, SSD for boot, and media on a RAID 1 two-HDD configuration for redunancy. Here is the question I'm wrestling with: Should I move from Fedora-server Emby to FreeNAS-plugin Emby? Let me say that I know there is no cut and dried answer to this due to different processors, operating systems (essentially Linux vs FreeBSD), chipsets, etc. But anecdotally I have heard of a more performant TCP/IP stack on BSD, and I want to reclaim my USB drives although that is not strictly speaking a dealbreaker. However, Emby would be running from an SSD which I am assuming would make a big difference. Of course, I also don't have any experience with the FreeNAS Emby plugin. Are there any relatively stable data points or pieces of information that I am missing that may suggest choosing one course over the other? Many thanks in advance!

Hello all, first of all THANK you for your hard work making this great piece of software! I really enjoy the project and love the fact, that you are not that focussed on collecting all the possible data like PLEX does. But back to my problem. When I start my emby server on FreeNAS (FreeBSD based) the process mono-sgen is consuming lot of resources. (Background: I only have some music in emby) First of all, CPU is for some hours on about 30% load (Xeon E3-1225v3) and during this time, there can be seen often write operations on my SSD. I dont know why but it is bothering me, as I don't know why Emby does this and in my eyes it is not neccessary to write data. Read would make perfect sense, but also not from SSD, as there are only the Emby internal files stored, and the music is written from my HDD pool. Can someone please explain this to me, and if there is a solution available, please share. In this case, early 50GB are written in 1h, before I stopped the server again. I have installed Emby from the FreeNAS plugins, but I dont mind to reinstall it from scratch with the suggestion here: https://emby.media/freebsd-server.html The only thing I would like to know on this how to "recompile the multimedia/ffmpeg package". Many thanks, IceBoosteR

httpClient.Get was sending requests using SSLv3, however that was unsupported by the server(CloudFlare) which caused the request to fail. SSLv3 Should not be used, due to the POODLE attack and is insecure. Edit: Looks like there is something else causing it to fail when sending requests to CloudFlare. FreeNAS: 11.1-U5 Emby: 3.3.1.0 (using plugin) Chrome: 66 (but has happened with previous versions, both on Mac and Windows) Mobile: Nexus 6P (Android 8.1.0, June 5 2018) I have a library type of Photos to share the photos I have. Unfortunately, when I try to view them either on the web client or the mobile client, they do not display. The folder level images do display properly, but the file level images do not, nor do the single images. I have attached screen shots of everything including the server log. photos: parent level chicago: folder (viewing image thumbnails) chicago-single: image itself console-log: self explanatory server-63664617600.txt

Hi all I haven't been on the forums for a very long time and am back for a query. Since Media Browser and the rebranding to Emby I have seen Emby transform into a masterpiece and am very thankful for the teams that have put in the effort and time into this nifty set of software and different packages out there to suit peoples desires in terms of being compatible between Operating Systems and devices. This will most undoubtedly be mentioned throughout the forums but I just somewhat do not know what to search when it comes to this. I have looked among the different options for the NAS Servers but have not come to any conclusion as to what is better or for my needs. I also don't have much of an idea when it comes to hardware or OS and what's available. If any users that have experimented with more than one device or OS that can actually comment on what they found better in comparison would be much appreciated. I am still interested in what users have to say about one still if that is all they managed to use. 1 - People who have experience in the different NAS devices? (QNAP, Synology, WD, Seagates, etc.) What components benefit what and why? Possibly specs or a basic rule of thumb for when it comes to picking hardware The gist from what I've seen really is, if I am wanting the server to transcode, I will need a decent CPU to follow suite, but if I am direct streaming or direct playing, the hard work has been taken out of it and can go for something on the lighter end? 2 - The different OS and what each ones pro's and con's are? (ASUSTOR, FreeNAS, Open Media Vault, QNAP, Synology, etc.) Just an OS on the whole. Features and ease of use. Can I change OS regardless of the device I end up with and could I run into problems doing this? Mainly where Emby shines the most in terms of being easy to set up and close to error free as a package as this is my main purpose of wanting a NAS Server. (I am aware that none of them have been under development for long so expect bugs and fixes needed) 3 - Anyone who has built a NAS Device and/or decided against a NAS and decided to build another PC for a server? Would it be advisable to build my own NAS or PC in terms of getting more what I want for a better price?I currently use my PC as the server streaming to a Samsung TV with the App, from what I believe, I don't think in my scenario transcoding it taking place at all as the media plays almost instantly and my CPU/ram usage on my PC doesn't seem to increase while running the server. The TV naturally plays MP4's and the bitrate I imagine is within what the TV handles as the MP4's are around 2gig each with 1080p video and stereo output. I would potentially would want the server to do a few other things such as a monthly backup of mine and my GF's PC's and possibly have remote access. Sorry for the long post. Thanks in advance for anyone that can be of assistance and has some input on the subject. Cheers Strugglez/ Mike.

Would anyone know where I could find the Activity log files. I want to try to go through all the raw information and data myself to see I could make something out of it. The Reports plugin with the activity log doesn't give me all the information I need.
