  1. Hello everyone, I am currently running Emby on a NAS Synology DS218Play. All files such as movies, series etc. are also stored there. However, over time there are more and more files and the NAS is not particularly powerful. I also have a Raspberry Pi 5 with 8GB RAM running on my network. Would it speed up Emby if I install Emby on the Pi 5 and tell the system that the files are on the NAS? Can I install my Emby backup on the new installation on the Pi 5? Many thanks in advance Translated with DeepL.com (free version)
  2. So maybe since a couple of weeks back, maybe more. I'm having some problems with transcoding 4k videos on my Synology 918+. It used to work pretty good, with only the odd movie stuttering. The one with the biggest problems is a Apple TV coming from Internet. I'm pretty sure bandwidth is not the problem in this case, we have plenty. I've attached some logs from three different media files. It looks like it's using hardware sometimes, and sometimes not? Thing is, it used to work pretty good, but now it doesn't work at all. Almost every movie that requires transcoding stutters like crazy. I tried multiple things in the Apple TV client, different quality options, disabling subtitles, didn't seem to help. The license is regularly lost

Hello Yesterday I downloaded movies from the server to my shZfv, today, at about 8 o'clock on UTS-5 I watched a movie offline. At about 13 o'clock I discovered that all the downloaded files had disappeared from the tablet and there was no license on the server. 4. I have emby APP installed on my Synology NAS. If I use my Roku Ultra (also using emby APP) to stream personal videos from my Synology server, everything is working good. If I use my Amazon FireStick (with emby APP), a lot of my videos are upside down or sideways. Videos were recorded using my iPhone. Thanks
  5. Hallo an Alle!

  8. When I play a video from my TV through DLNA (the TV is an LG C2), Emby does not know that I watched that video. The play does not appear in Server > Dashboard > Activity. Any other plays are recognized - from my PC or my phone. I also use the plugin for Trakt.tv and the play is not registered there either. Using version 4.8.10.0 on a Synology DS923+ NAS (64 bit), with DSM 7.2.2. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
  9. Hello everyone, I got a file system error in my volume1, and need to move my Main Emby Video libraries as Movies, TV Shows and custom metadata videos (example: homebrewing documentaries and youtube downloads) to another volume2. Since I have the NFO data in each media directory, I thought it would be as simple as copy the overall content and just update the library from /volume1/path to /volume2/path, however the field to change the folder path (indicated in yellow) is read-only. When clicking the pencil the Folder in Select Path window is read-only (to maintain integrity, I understand) I tried to add a new Folder and remove the previous, but the NFO metadata is not being used to update the library. Especially for my custom libraries, it took me a while to update and reference all the documentaries and other personal files I have in the NFO metadata. I'd like to avoid going through that again. I see 2 alternatives: 1) Stop the Emby Server and make this change the path directly in the metadata database field (hopefully one field only, and the file location path is not spread throughout many tables in the database), something like a SQL command would do as replace '\volume1\path' to "\volume2\path' ; else 2) Some sort of flag to force the NFO to be updated in the directory to be used while reloading the video library. Thanks in advance,
  10. I tried to change the Content Type of an existing library on Emby server installed on Synology. I followed the guide here: https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/99927-how-to-change-the-content-type-for-a-library/, but Synology stores libraries in an SQL database, so the process is not as straightforward. Therefore, I’m sharing the procedure that worked for me. I hope that it hepls someone. - Turn off the Emby server - Connect to NAS by SSH - Navigate to the directory: cd /var/packages/EmbyServer/var/data - Set correct permissions: sudo chmod 664 library.db sudo chmod 775 /var/packages/EmbyServer/var/data/ - Create a backup of the database: cp library.db library.db.bak - Open the database tool: sudo sqlite3 library.db - List the tables: .tables - Libraries are stored in the table `MediaItems`. - Get the column names for the library table: PRAGMA table_info(MediaItems); - Select data based on the name of the desired library (focus on entries with an existing `Path`): SELECT Id, Name, Path FROM MediaItems WHERE Name = 'LIBRARY_NAME'; - From the selected record, take the ID. - Select additional settings for the library based on the ID: SELECT * FROM ItemExtradata WHERE ItemId = ID; - It will show that one column contains JSON data with settings, including the `ContentType` value. - Valid `ContentType` values: - Audio books: `"ContentType":"audiobooks"` - Camera Uploads: `"ContentType":"homevideos"` - Collections: `"ContentType":"boxsets"` - Home videos & photos: `"ContentType":"homevideos"` - Movies: `"ContentType":"movies"` - Music: `"ContentType":"music"` - Music Videos: `"ContentType":"musicvideos"` - Playlists: `"ContentType":"playlists"` - TV shows: `"ContentType":"tvshows"` - Mixed content: `EMPTY` (no `ContentType` key) - Update the `ContentType` to Mixed content (original value is `ORIGINAL_CONTENT_TYPE`): UPDATE ItemExtradata SET Value = REPLACE(Value, '"ContentType":"ORIGINAL_CONTENT_TYPE",', '') WHERE ItemId = ID; - Alternatively, update `ContentType` to a new value (`NEW_CONTENT_TYPE`) (original value is `ORIGINAL_CONTENT_TYPE`): UPDATE ItemExtradata SET Value = REPLACE(Value, '"ContentType":"ORIGINAL_CONTENT_TYPE"', '"ContentType":"NEW_CONTENT_TYPE"') WHERE ItemId = ID; - Exit the database tool: .exit - Delete the database backup: sudo rm library.db.bak - Start the Emby server - Run the "Scan media library" task
  11. Hi Newbie to the forum and recently ditched Plex for Emby just months ago. I see what the buzz is about! With the proliferation of PGS subtitle use, it has really been a challenge since PGS is not supported. So off to the supported extensions. However I have exhausted every effort to get the search and download subtitles feature to work other than coming up with no results. Here is what I have done so far: I have ascertained that the file name is relevant Made certain IMBD ID is correct I signed up for both Open Subtitles and Addic7ed I installed both Open Subtitles and Addic7ed plugins and entered credentials Rebooted Emby after plugin install I have selected the movies library via advanced setting, set sub language to English, assured both plugins were checked, and to hopefully increase chances of getting something returned, I toggled just about everything off ( including "require a hash match..etc".) And I've just upgraded to 4.8 Beta The end result is the same. Every single movie subtitle search comes up with no results. Please let me know if I have missed anything. Thank you. Sh4ggy
  12. Hello everyone, I’m setting up an Emby server on a NAS DS224+ and have reached the transcoding section, a topic I’m not very familiar with. The NAS processor is an Intel Celeron J4125, which, according to its technical specs and what I found on Wikipedia, has the following compatibility: Transcoding: MPEG-2, AVC, VP8, HEVC, HEVC 10-bit. Decoding only: VC-1, VP9, VP9 10-bit. My question is how to interpret this information in Emby’s settings. Each codec seems to have at least two configuration options, and there’s a priority order between them. I recently purchased the Emby license, giving me access to the Transcoding Tests plugin. However, I found it quite overwhelming due to the number of available options. I decided to perform the file-based test and selected all the options available. Then, I assigned a folder for the tests and started the task. This generated several files in the assigned folder and began a series of tests, but most of them are returning errors. Additionally, I noticed there are over 1200 tests, and after 2 hours, only 16 tests have been completed. Is this normal, or did I do something wrong? I’d greatly appreciate it if someone with experience in this topic could guide me on how to properly configure transcoding in Emby. Thank you in advance!
  13. This certificate was specifically created to use Emby through the Microsoft Edge browser over HTTPS on port 8920, eliminating the "connection is not secure" warning. It is important to note that this certificate works properly in Edge but not in Firefox. For the certificate to function correctly, it must be installed both in the Windows Certificate Manager and on the NAS where the Emby server is hosted. Note: The domain names and IPs used here are examples (, ) and must be replaced with those corresponding to your network.example.domain.lansubdomain.local.domain 1. Generate the .crt and .key files Open the Windows terminal: Launch a terminal (Command Prompt or PowerShell) and navigate to the folder where you want to generate the files. Choose the appropriate command based on your needs: For a single domain (single SAN): openssl req -x509 -newkey rsa:2048 -sha256 -days 3650 -nodes -keyout example.domain.lan.key -out example.domain.lan.crt -subj "/CN=example.domain.lan" -addext "subjectAltName=DNS:example.domain.lan" For multiple domains and IPs (multiple SANs): openssl req -x509 -newkey rsa:2048 -sha256 -days 3650 -nodes -keyout example.domain.lan.key -out example.domain.lan.crt -subj "/CN=example.domain.lan" -addext "subjectAltName=DNS:example.domain.lan,DNS:subdomain.local.domain,IP:192.168.1.xx" Verify the results: The files and will be generated in the specified folder. example.domain.lan.crt and example.domain.lan.key 2. Create the .pfx file for Emby Use the following command to merge the and files into a file: .crt + .key = .pfx openssl pkcs12 -export -out example.domain.lan.pfx -inkey example.domain.lan.key -in example.domain.lan.crt -name "example.domain.lan" Set a password for the .pfx file: You’ll be prompted to enter and confirm a password. You can leave it blank or assign one. Note: If you assign a password, remember it, as it will be required in Emby’s settings. The file will be generated in the same folder. example.domain.lan.pfx 3. Upload the .pfx file to the NAS Transfer the file: Copy the file to a folder accessible on your NAS. example.domain.lan.pfx Ensure that Emby can access the path where the file is stored. 4. Install the .crt certificate in Windows Open the .crt file directly: Double-click on the file . example.domain.lan.crt Click the Install Certificate button. Follow the installation wizard: Select Current User as the target location. Choose Place all certificates in the following store. Click Browse and select Trusted Root Certification Authorities. Click OK, then Next, and finally Finish. Confirm the installation: A confirmation message will appear asking if you want to install the certificate. Accept to complete the installation. 5. Configure Emby with the certificate Log in to Emby and navigate to Settings → Network. Locate the section Custom SSL certificate path. Enter the path to the file you uploaded to the NAS..pfx If you set a password for the file, enter it in the corresponding field. If you left it blank, leave the field empty..pfx In Secure connection mode, select: "Preferred, but not required" (this allows connections via both HTTP and HTTPS). Click Save and restart the Emby server to apply the changes. Important Notes The domain names (, ) and IP () are examples. Replace them with the actual domains and IPs of your network.example.domain.lansubdomain.local.domain192.168.1.xx If you need to include more addresses or subdomains, add them to the field when generating the certificate. For example:subjectAltName -addext "subjectAltName=DNS:example.domain.lan,DNS:subdomain.local.domain,DNS:extra.domain.com,IP:192.168.2.xx" Credits This guide was completed with the help and insights provided by @Lessajwhose expertise made this task much easier. Thank you for your support! Final Note If there's anything I missed or ways to improve this guide, I’d greatly appreciate your feedback and insights. Sharing your knowledge or suggesting adjustments would not only help refine this guide but also assist others who might face similar challenges. 14. Greetings, I recently purchased the Emby Premiere lifetime license and have been transitioning from Jellyfin to Emby due to better support. So far, the experience has been positive, but I’ve encountered a problem I can’t seem to resolve. I prefer to access my Emby server through a web browser rather than the apps, as the browser offers tools like image capture and translation features, which allow me to interact directly with the server. However, the constant message stating "this site is not secure" has become very annoying. For context, I’m hosting my Emby server on a Synology NAS. I set up a local DNS address using Synology's DNS server to ensure I can access the server even during internet outages. The DNS address I created is nas.angelsing.local.lan, which is directly linked to the NAS’s local IP. This setup allows me to access the server locally without relying on internet connectivity. The problem is that browsers detect this DNS address as insecure. To address this, I tried creating a self-signed SSL certificate using OpenSSL on Windows. This process generated two files: .crt and .key. I imported the .crt file into the Windows certificate manager to make it trusted by my machine. I also merged the .crt and .key files into a .pfx file, as Emby requires this format for SSL certificates. I uploaded the .pfx file to an accessible folder on the NAS and configured the certificate path in Emby’s Network settings. With this, I was able to access the server using https://nas.angelsing.local.lan:8920. However, the browser warning about the site being insecure still appears (tested on Edge). While I can access the server, the browser continues to flag the connection as not secure. It’s worth noting that I have another certificate issued by Synology for my public DDNS address xxx.DDNS.synology, which works perfectly for remote connections. However, I specifically need a solution for my local address nas.angelsing.local.lan so that browsers stop showing this warning when accessing the server locally. Has anyone encountered a similar issue or knows how to obtain a certificate that is recognized as secure by browsers for local addresses? Is there something I need to configure additionally on the NAS or in Emby to resolve this? I’d greatly appreciate any guidance or advice. Thank you in advance!

    Need help updating

I run Emby on my DS223j Nas and a Win 11 PC. Emby reports my server needs updating from 8.0 to 10. It instructs me to download the update (which I did) emby-server-synology72_4.8.10.0_x86_64.spk Now it tells me to stop the server. After I stop the server, how do I update Emby on my NAS??? The update file does not open saying to pick a program to open it. I spend 2 hours searching for a simple procedure explaining how I update the Emby server! Is this some secret operation? Why is there no help on the steps I do to simply update my server? Any help would be appreciated.
  16. Hello together, i want to switch from plex to emby, bought a life time premiere pass to make sure not to miss anything. Now i want to import my directories. I added emby user to the old plex directories on the synology level. So far so good. I am able to import all files. But, right now, i really have problems with my ripped audio books and cds. In all imported directories i added cover.jpg files. But somehow, especially with audiobooks, the images are not detected or at least not shown in my library. For showing audiobooks i open my audiobook library and switch to the books panel. Here i dont see any images. On the other hand: if i switch to the folder/diretory tab, there i see the directories with images. Here are some examples: Also in the music libs there are some pictures not detected or shown. Here its only 10%, Audiobooks are 95%. I tried to play with the settings of the lib, but actually i dont know with setting is the best. I assume, usually images in the directories should be taken first, only if there is no image it tries to look up in the internet? Is it a problem if the albums are not detected? But again, i would assume, it would take local pictures first. Additionally it seems like the feature for saving images in the media folder doesnt work. I tried to upload images in the emby gui but the uploaded images didnt show up in the local media folder of the album. I read the naming convention stuff, i waited until the scan was complete (no green bar anywhere anymore). Maybe someone is able to help here?

Multiple Profiles in Kodi and Emby

Dear community I'm using KODI + Emby (installed on my NAS) for many years now, but now my kids are more and more playing around TV alone, and when I'm not especially around, and I would like to secure a little bit then content they may have access to. I tried to set up a new profile in KODI, ok that's easy so far. Then I set up a new profiles in Emby, selecting the content depending on tags (like TV-MA, FR-16...). When I logg of my Admin profile in KODI and enter the kids profile, it's like the plugin emby for kodi is not even installed (I chose "separate" for content source)... I tried to recreate another profile but choosing then "share" option. While loggin into my kids profile, there is an error message of the plugin Emby for Kodi, and I have no content... Well I'm a bit stuck, I don't really understand what I'm doing wrong... Any help would be much appreciated Thanks !

  20. Hi, question how do I move my Server in my Synology NAS to my Windows machine I tried putting my Emby server in Windows and tried the external address to stream out my network with Windows but it keeps going back to the Synology NAS server instead of the Windows Server. I tried to stop the server in my Synology NAS but it keeps on going back to that server. Any clues about what I am doing wrong?

Good afternoon, I've been searching through my most recent server log for an unrelated project that I've been working on and found a few errors in the log output that I wanted to present to the System IO errors in the log as of late, and tried to fix some by following the article below, but the issues still persist. Additionally, DSM7 has no options to schedule a task based on event such as boot-up. I'm happy to privately provide a server debug log to those who want to view the entire contents and help me out. I'm not going to share it here. Thanks in advance, friends! - Arly
  23. Hey, I would like to move individual libraries from volume 1 to volume 2. How do I get all metadata including the added date and seen status to be included? I found one or two posts, but they talk about reinstalling Emby. I don't want to move all libraries including Emby, just individual libraries. Greets Dicken
  24. Hello everyone, I'm a new emby user since a week or two. But there is a problem that keeps occuring. When a streamed a video to my chromecast it showed subtitles, but this was only the first day. Now when I try to stream the same movie (or other) it doesn't show any subtitles. When I pauze the video on mobile when it shows a subtitle and than stream it, it will show that sentence for a split second and nothing after. Context: - I run my emby server on a synology - I use opensubtitles as automatic source - self added subtitles are having the correct naming (showed at the ? in emby) - I have searched the forum but didn't come across some solution Thanks for helping.
  25. Hello, I have a Emby Server instance running on Debian 11 with my libraries on a Synology NAS connected by NFS shares. After upgrading my Synology NAS to DSM 7.x my Emby server can no longer read nor write to the NAS libraries. Emby log attached. Oddly, Emby does not seem able to connect to either SiliconDust network attached tuners which may imply the issue is not NAS permissions related but something with Emby Server itself. Debian Ver. = 11 Emby Server Ver. = 4.7.14.0 Synology DSM Ver. = 7.1.1-42962 embyserver.txt
