Arctic Zephyr: From Ashes (Danvers Preview) Alpha 4
"From Ashes Alpha 3 Cumulative Update" - "And this time it's more Alex Danvers than Kara Danvers"

As many know, overnight Arctic Zephyr: From Ashes Alpha 3 was released and than subsequently pulled due to an issue with the Settings page not being displayed. Today, Arctic Zephyr: From Ashes Alpha 4 has been released as a "cumulative update" to Alpha 3 and fixing the Settings page display issue. While we have fixed a number of issues from the previous Alpha releases, this version also suffers from a few issues but Arctic Zephyr: From Ashes for Kodi Krypton is starting to slowly come together. Alpha 4 is a stepping stone; the release is minor and some features are not functioning or have been disabled temporarily (or without us realizing it) as we prepare some of the biggest changes yet to Arctic Zephyr: From Ashes.

To signify how many changes are coming in the next alpha release, Arctic Zephyr: From Ashes is going to be skipping a version, jumping from Alpha 4 to Alpha 6 in the next Danvers Preview release. For now however, here is what you need to know for Arctic Zephyr: From Ashes Danvers Preview (Alpha 4).

Getting It

NortheBridge by Design® Repo - If you do not have the NortheBridge by Design® Repository, you may download it from https://embycdn.northebridge.com/Victori...1.0.00.zip and install it to your Kodi Krypton. This has superseded all other methods of getting AZ:FA to become the preferred method and how you will get the latest from AZ:FA first.
Emby Beta Repo - Emby, the original and continued home to Arctic Zephyr: From Ashes also has the latest Arctic Zephyr: From Ashes Danvers Preview update. It is available for download on the Emby official site or you can get the repository directly from the NortheBridge by Design® Repository.

Known Issues

Well, it's an alpha after all and there are some issues with Alpha 4 that will be fixed in the next release. Two issues, one that I knew about related to adjusting views because @ is currently making that experience better; and an unexpected crash in the Music section first reported by Blurayx.

You will not be able to select any View Type besides List View and Thumbnail View. This will be addressed in the Alpha 6 Release.

Arctic Zephyr: From Ashes (Danvers Preview) Alpha 6

"For a Myriad of Changes...

 

Over the past few days, Arctic Zephyr: From Ashes (Danvers Preview) Alpha 6 was released in two waves: the NBD Repo and then the Emby Repo (all zip files and Git releases are done at the same time as the NBD Repo). We do this for three reasons: 1) there's a delay on the NBD Repo to get it to all the edge servers around the world; 2) we want to know our audience (Windows/Linux/Mac/RasPi/etc.) which can only be done through the NBD Repo; and 3) We want to make sure that the NBD and Emby Repos always present the same version as we 100% support the Emby Server project which is seen throughout this skin and its literature so it just makes sense.

 

This allows me to tell you some pretty staggering numbers. Each Krypton Alpha release has been increasing by 100K in downloads. This doesn't mean that AZ:FA is being used by each and every single one who downloads it but Alpha 4 was downloaded a staggering .711 Million (711,000) times while the Jarvis 3.2.21 has accumulated just over 1.2 Million. Krypton Alpha releases have been increasing steadily in numbers and will likely soon pass the final Jarvis version by the time Arctic Zephyr: From Ashes Danvers (5.0.00) hits the proverbial shelves.

 

Needless to say, these are pretty huge numbers. Of course, Windows is used most often followed by TV (Raspberry Pi and its variants and other IoT devices), Linux, Mac, Smartphones, and Tablets. All of that tells us "we need to listen to these users and help better tailor it to their experiences" which wouldn't be possible without the NBD Repo. Also an astonishing number: AZ:FA has been downloaded in 71 countries worldwide (US and UK are the most popular in case you are wondering).

 

Now it's time for Alpha 6...

 

I didn't include much of any screenshots this time because Alpha 7 is getting ready to be released which will feature more in-depth screenshots as we truly start getting things working and fitting into the proposed Danvers Home Screen which you all should get a preview of soon (and I hope you all like! I'll post the UX mock-up soon for opinions).

The Road to Danvers

 

It's been a very long road to the Danvers update. So long in fact that we wanted to acknowledge all the hard work that goes into creating this skin. Danvers was to be released as version 4 of this skin but starting with Alpha 7 you'll notice a massive version jump to 4.9.99. This is because Arctic Zephyr: From Ashes Danvers will be version 5. You may say that's a little confusing but given the sheer amount of changes that are still coming down the pipeline I believe you all will find it fitting if we make this major version jump.

Arctic Zephyr: From Ashes Danvers (Preview Alpha 7) Has Been Pushed to Update Origin

Moments ago, the rather significant update to Arctic Zephyr: From Ashes Danvers, was pushed to the update origin in Washington, D.C. and should make its way to endpoints around the world within the next 2-12 hours. As always, if you have the NortheBridge by Design repo, it will automatically update to 4.9.90-alpha7 within that time. It will also be available from the Emby Beta Repo tomorrow.

Release notes, screenshots, and all of that good stuff should be posted in a day or two at most.

Seriously, this update was far larger in scope than I expected. It might as well have been Alpha 7 and Alpha 8 in one.

Arctic Zephyr: From Ashes Danvers (Preview Alpha 7) Release Update - Immediate Suspension of Alpha 7 Availability

 

It has come to my attention early this afternoon that Arctic Zephyr: From Ashes Danvers (Preview Alpha 7) is suffering from a severe bug preventing its installation and attempting to force the installation will cause Kodi to crash. Distribution of Alpha 7 has been suspended until the issue is rectified.

 

Please note that this will cause a "Kodi has stopped working" under Windows or "Kodi quit unexpectedly" under Mac OS X.

Arctic Zephyr: From Ashes Danvers (Preview Alpha 8) Released to Update Origin

 

Well, you know what they say, "when life gives you lemons, make lemonade!" Alpha 7 was suspended from distribution yesterday due to a fatal bug. Today, I am pleased to announce that through hard work, AZ:FA Alpha 8 has been released to the update origin and will begin installing on devices in the next 2-4 hours. When I have assembled release notes and screenshots of the latest update, I will post them here and push the update to the Emby Beta Repository.

Arctic Zephyr: For Another Age

 

Even though the release of Arctic Zephyr: From Ashes Danvers (Preview Alpha 8) has just hit the Emby Repo I have been able to accomplish a lot over the past day and although it may seem premature given that Danvers isn't even released yet nor is Kodi Krypton but I am pleased to announce that AZ:FA is about to get a whole log bigger and become something I like to call a "super mod" - combining two versions of Arctic Zephyr; Exploded (AZ:E) for which this project was born out of with Arctic Zephyr: Braz (AZ:, another popular modification to AZ. In conjunction with the new features coming to AZ:FA with Danvers, Arctic Zephyr: For Another Age will feature far more enhancements and will be released slowly after AZ:FA Danvers goes stable.

 

Although Arctic Zephyr: For Another Age will continue the legacy of Arctic Zephyr: Exploded which was created by @@im85288 and @@badaas, it will now also continue the legacy of another popular AZ skin.

 

The only downside to this is that the "Danvers Home Screen" may have to wait until Arctic Zephyr: For Another Age which will include a standard Black/Blue/White color design that is within the design ethos of the new Danvers Home Screen.

 

Finally, AZ:FA Danvers Preview (Alpha 8) will have it's release notes posted here tomorrow but it's already in the Emby Repo! Please report any bugs you find or any suggestions you might have!

Arctic Zephyr: From Ashes Danvers (Preview Alpha 8)

"We Got it Mostly Right This Time..."

 

After the debacle of Alpha 7, I am pleased to announce Arctic Zephyr: From Ashes Danvers (Preview Alpha 8). A Cumulative Update to Alpha 7 (meaning it has all of Alpha 7's changes) plus the fixes to Alpha 7 to prevent Kodi from crashing, the latest release brings with it a number of GUI changes and "under-the-hood" changes. It has been tested to work on multiple platforms with Kodi Krypton Beta 1 so you shouldn't run into too many problems if any at all. The Alpha 8 Preview introduces a major version change up to 4.9.90 as we get closer to the AZ:FA Danvers Beta and features a myriad of more changes. Please note that the Music Hub may still unexpected crash with this release.

 

We do however believe that this release is stable enough to at least sit out in the wild for a little while and give @ and myself a little time to rest. We have been shotgunning releases for quite a while and I do believe that this is a good spot to say "we've completed lap 1."

 

So, as long as everyone can live with the Music Hub not working for a little bit and the symbol errors, we'll have AZ:FA Danvers (Preview Beta 1) for you at the end of September which should give us time to recuperate and me some additional time to get the AZ:FA Danvers/AZ:FA (For Another Age) site up and running so everyone here gets access to all the information.

Usually on the standard icon view it would display artist image as a backdrop and also in the image to the left hand side but now it's not showing anything- is this to do with Emby or did you change something in the skin? THis is on Kodi 16.0 with the last update you released for Jarvis, just a minor niggle.

 

Al CU Lyrics won;t display on Now Playing- sort of displays floating brackets but no text, again, this is on the same version as I mentioned above on ANdroid 5.1 with only Mediacodec running (in case it makes a difference.

@@chiefnerd - Actually, the Music Update goes out today so there might have definitely been issues with Music previously. I just pushed Alpha 9 to the Update Origin and will upload it to the Emby Repo later today when I have a few moments (I don't like posting it to Emby without the release notes and screenshots - OCD like that).

 

You should however, be seeing the Music Update (Alpha 9) today.

 

Over at the Kodi forums we have talked about the "bigger news" that's going to overshadow AZ:FA Danvers - Arctic Zephyr: For Another Age which will bring together AZ:FA and AZ:Braz; the two most popular AZ mods out there. Now Danvers has become a release that's dong a lot of the backend heavy lifting as we get ready for some major changes.

 

However, let me know your experience with Music once you get Alpha 9 - if you're still having issues we'll definitely look into it for you but CU Lyrics being fixed was on the changelog list for it.

Hey guys!

 

On a fresh install of Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, I'm having troubles installing the skin. I'm using the Northbridge repo, and I've also used the Emby Beta repo too. I've even tried manually installing from the zip. Other Kodi repo skins install fine.

 

I'm running on nightly builds of Kodi. It's currently Kodi 17.0 BETA5. This is the error I receive... I've made sure Kodi has the right permissions - I think... Hopefully someone can help me get this sorted!

@@StealthDefender - I am not to familiar with Music on Kodi; we actually added a new developer for that - @@Habitual_Sinner (over on the Kodi forums) but he's still getting the lay of the land.

 

I'm trying to figure out what you are trying to do? Do you mean you want to simply press play on an album and let it go directly to the now playing screen with the first song or what are you trying to suggest? I am a little confused at what you are trying to request.

@@DomUK89 - this is the first report in a very long time of being unable to install AZ:FA. However, with that said, and having not kept up with Kodi releases since I have been moving, just looking at your log seems to indicate that the permissions on the file system aren't correct. Let's go line by line.

The first line indicates that it's obviously trying to unpack AZ:FA from whatever repository (NortheBridge or Emby) that you elected to try and download it from. It's indicating that it's trying to unpack "skin.arctic.zephyr.fromashes" to a temporary directory: 417524b3-120b-41e2-91d2-ac66772fe032.

 

However:

It can't create AZ:FA's "16x9" folder which contains the majority of the skin files. This error appears to be indicative of a file system permission issue. Kodi cannot create the temporary directory for skin installation.

The zip file can't be unpacked because the temporary directory Kodi is trying to unpack it to can't be created.

 

With that said, the last release version of AZ:FA was tested against Kodi Krypton Beta 3 (that was AZ:FA Danvers Alpha 9). However, this is currently the version still being installed by many everyday so it shouldn't matter. The current development branch is being tested against Beta 5 of Kodi 17 but I highly recommend against downloading it at the moment as there are severe bugs.

 

An alternative would be to extract the zip file and copy it to the Kodi addons directory. After that, both the Emby Beta Repo and NortheBridge by Design repo will keep it updated.

 

However, this is the first installation issue reported in a long time so I will try and replicate it to see but there are a lot of Ubuntu 16.04 and 16.10 users and this is the first report of an installation issue.

I havent been following this thread since my install of AZ:FA has been working great on Jarvis for months.  Today I get the notification about it being end of life, etc, but it also doesnt seem to want to update new content.  I added movies that show up on Emby server but will not show on Kodi on my shield.  I will happily update to Krypton when it is in the Google play store, but I dont sideload, etc.  Dont know how.  So I get a Kodi /  Emby error now that tells me to check the log, which of course I also dont know how to do.   Any suggestions?  If a log is helpful and someone can tell me how to check it I will.

I'm glad @@Angelblue05 was able to resolve your problem @@hifiaudio2. I also want to assure you that we understand distributions haven't been updated to Kodi 17 yet and even the Google Play store doesn't have Kodi 17 so you can't get AZ:FA Danvers yet. There's a "Last Call" update that's coming that will include a few additional fixes, an option to turn off the End of Life notification, and a few more stability enhancements. I think a feature is going to be added to AZ:FA on Jarvis as well but don't hold me to that one.

 

However, I do want to stress that the move to end of life AZ:FA Dormer (Kodi 16.1) was done so that the development team (now composed of three people) can focus on the upcoming version, AZ:FA Danvers (Kodi 17). We were being stretched thin so we decided this to bring you all a higher quality skin now that we got our footing.

 

Also, I know you haven't been keeping up with the AZ:FA thread but we're already planning Arctic Zephyr: For Another Age which is essentially a combination of the two most popular AZ mods (AZ:FA and AZ:Braz) as well as a new design.

 

We want to up the quality of the code and differentiate it further because it's been talked about by users and even ourselves about how much AZ:FA deviates from the original AZ that it could be considered its own skin. That's still a bit of ways off though.

I can understand that you can not support the skin for both Jarvis and Krypton, but this way of forcing your user to a new version is really not OK. One of the last updates already "broke" the home screen as the bottom bar is to small to hold the menu icons and I could live with that, but with this last skin update my Kodi Jarvis install doesn't even boot to the home screen and just stays on the skin's "loading" screen until I press the Home button on my remote. Come on, Krypton hasn't even been released!

 

This is really a very bad user experience and doesn't bring confidence that you will provide good updates in the future. What happens when Kodi 18 alpha/beta versions are released? Are you going to "break" my Home Theater setup again? I consider myself a nerd and can work around a lot of problems, but I'm not the only one in the house using this HTPC. I'm the one who gets the complaints from my wife when things are not working and I just can't tell her to SSH into the box to change stuff or "sudo reboot".

 

I do want to thank you for your continued work on this skin, I can't even begin to imagine the amount of hours your putting into this. But please think about your users that are not upgrading to beta release of software the moment they are released!
