Kramerika 16
I am having an issue that I am struggling to find a solution for. I am running the Emby server and streaming to the Emby app on an Amazon Fire TV (2nd generation) through a hard-wired network. I have movies that are HD video with DTS audio and others that are SD video with AC3 audio (DD). The container is always MKV, and the video is always h.264 with the same or very similar quality. The only difference between them is the resolution, frame rate (either 23.976 or 29.97), and the audio. The HD content plays perfectly fine, but the SD content only plays the audio without the video. If I disable the built-in VLC player, it all works fine although now everything is being transcoded which I do not want if possible as I do not want the server doing unnecessary work. The frame rate does not appear to play a role. I put a few SD movies that do not work with the built-in VLC player on a USB drive to test them directly with the stand-alone VLC app, and they work fine there. It seems as though it is related to SD content and AC3 audio with the built-in VLC player. However, I do have a few anomalies. I have one movie that is SD with a DTS-ES track that works fine, another movie that is SD with a DTS track that does not play the video, and another HD movie with an AC3 track that plays fine. How can I get it to direct play the SD video with AC3 or DTS audio like the stand-alone VLC player does?

How can I get it to direct play the SD video with AC3 or DTS audio like the stand-alone VLC player does? I'm not sure as I haven't seen this situation myself or reported by others. I guess you could try playing one of the problem vidoes for a few seconds and then back out and send a log (turn on debug options) but I'm afraid I'm not going to get enough information to see any errors that may be reported by VLC because it spits out so much garbage when you stop a video. Still probably worth a try. If you do that, please come back here and tell me the Emby user name that was logged in. Thx.
Kramerika 16
By username, do you mean the user on the server that I am using in tandem with the Fire TV app? The user profile on my server/app is "MediaServer" which is tied to my username here, "Kramerika", in the user profile settings on the server. I am using the trial version of the app right now but plan to invest in Emby Premiere once I am convinced that it will work the way that I want it to. I actually did try doing that (sending the log from the Fire TV app) last night after playing an SD movie with DTS audio that doesn't play the video. I will do it for a few more examples tonight when I get home.
ebr 15186
Thanks, I found your log. The one curious thing I see is this: 12-03 22:16:36.780 W/VideoCapabilities( 2154): Unrecognized profile/level 32768/2 for video/mp4v-es What does the media info on the server look like for these items? Kramerika 16
Here are some examples based on the circumstances that I posted. I did not include the chapter info to cut down on the length. I created all of these files with Handbrake using the original MKV rips from my own discs using basically the same profile with a bit more compression for HD movies. I kept the original audio and subtitles while compressing the video to h.264. Here is the info for the file that I sent the log for which is an SD movie with DTS audio. Kramerika 16
Bummer. I wonder why the stand-alone VLC app for the Fire TV plays them fine? I also can play everything on my Nexus 7 with the Android Emby app without transcoding. I might try an Nvidia Shield TV at some point. I sent a few more logs for good measure just in case it was helpful. Edited December 5, 2015 by Kramerika
Kramerika 16
A small update on this. Almost everything seems to work without using the built-in VNC player and transcoding. There is one exception. The movie about that is SD but with DTS-ES sound hangs the app. It sits and spins, and I have to hit the menu button to exit the app. If I could get it to generate a log, I would send it, but it seems that when it crashes, the log disappears. Hopefully I will be able to direct play everything with a future update as I really don't like to transcode. Is there any way to speed up the app loading content when you start it up? It is sluggish. Once everything loads, it's pretty snappy. I am on a wired GB connection, and the server is 64-bit Windows 7 with an Intel i7 and 6 GBs of RAM. Also, I was wondering if it was normal for some of the actors/actresses images to be missing? I tried to update the people on the server, but that didn't help. ebr 15186
I've never heard anyone say this app is sluggish. Mine produces a full home screen in about 1/8th of a second. Are you sure you don't have something like a drive needing to be woken up or something?
Kramerika 16
No, it is always on. It is a WD Green 5400 RPM 4 TB drive. It's possible that a faster drive would help, but I didn't think it would make that big of an impact. It takes more like 15-30 seconds for everything to load on startup for me. Once it all loads, navigating is fine.

I used to have slow propagation of the different rows, especially Next Up, but it's very pretty slick lately.
ebr 15186
Green drives do automatically sleep but that's not necessarily the problem. Just one possibility.
Kramerika 16
In doing some searching, it seems that there might be a way to turn off the sleeping feature, but it's not straight-forward. I'll have to look into it further, try it out, and report back. Otherwise, I might try a black drive instead. I do get some "(slow)" messages in the log. They are from 1000 up to almost 70000 ms. The IP address associated with this is primarily my Amazon Fire TV (wired) or my Nexus 7 tablet (wireless), which are what I have been using to test, although there are a few entries for the server IP or from 127.0.0.1. I set static IP addresses on all of my devices. I don't know what to copy from the log. Here is a section with a slow message. 2015-12-10 14:38:06.7128 Info HttpServer: HTTP Response 200 to 192.168.1.80. I'll have to look into it further, try it out, and report back. Otherwise, I might try a black drive instead. I wasn't able to use the wdidle3 utility for some reason (it was a while ago), but I was able to use this tool. I had to create a bootable linux flash drive and run it from there, but it worked perfectly. It's a bit of a hassle, but it's pretty straight-forward and worth it in the long run IMO. Kramerika 16
Thanks! I'll try that. Did you disable the timer completely or set it to 300 seconds? In some of my searching, it was mentioned a few times that disabling it completely can cause problems and that 300 seconds was a better option. jluce50 118
You know, I honestly don't remember. I think I set it to 300, but I could be wrong.
taxion 0
Using the search feature i was unable to resolve my problem. (So i'm forced to make my first post, been running "emby" since 2012. Set up. Emby server on a dedicated windows 7 machine. All files in library are stored one of two NAS (drobo5N). playback of HD (mostly H264) content is flawless and plays directly. However, anything encoded in MPEG2 also wants to play directly and the FTV does not support direct playback of MPEG2. If i uncheck VLC in the setting everything plays but everything is transcoded. Transcoding is quick but quality of content that can be played directly is degraded. Is transcoding on the fire all or nothing? Suggestion on play direct h264 and transcode h263? ebr 15186
Ah, a .vob file... And the OSD says "Direct/V"? Luke, should the VLC profile be transcoding a VOB?

taxion 0
using tsmuxer i changed the container to a .ts. It plays but says it's direct/v, which i doubt. it looks transcoded and should be.

Why do you doubt it? I'm sure it is direct streaming it and VLC is just decoding it locally.
