I swear I had audio in the Android TV app on beta .28 or .29, but on .30 I'm not getting audio in either Android TV or the standard Android app. In some cases it just goes to a black screen and spins.

Hi All-

ATSC 3.0 went live today in Omaha, NE. I am picking up 5 stations. All 5 work flawlessly and quickly/smooth in the HDHR app as well as the Channels DVR app (Android and Android TV). Video and Sound are great. However, not too well with Emby 😪

Installed the latest Beta server (4.7.0.35). Latest stable versions for both the Android app and Android TV app.

With the standard Android app on my phone (Pixel 6 Pro), Direct Play, it will attempt to tune the station (spinning circle) and it will flash the image for a split second then go black. No sound. No anything. If you change it to transcode, station will play after a while and have video & sound. (Both transcoded)

On Android TV (Nvidia Shield and Tivo Stream 4K), Direct Play, it takes a long time to tune the channel, 30-40 seconds, then works with sound most of the time. Other times it says "cannot tune channel". You can play back a recorded ATSC3 show and video will Direct Play while audio transcodes.

The ATSC3 channels play perfectly on my Galaxy S20 Ultra.  I am waiting for a Beelink Expand M, so I can connect my Galaxy phone to my TV via my Yamaha AVR.  That will tell me if my TV and AVR works with the Dolby AC-4 audio codec.

Not exactly. None of the ATSC3 channels work on my Android phone (Pixel 6 Pro) (3.2.44). They sometimes work on Emby Android TV, most of the time they do not. When they do it takes a LONG time to tune, like 30 seconds or longer.

They all work on the HDHR app as well as Channels DVR app for Android and Android TV. Takes about 4-5 seconds to tune and always work.

Takes about 15 seconds to start playing on my Galaxy S20 Ultra.

Channels DVR tunes them on my phone (as well as Android TV) in about 4-5 seconds. Video and sound is perfect.

On my phone, Emby hangs for a long time then the channel image flashes for a split second, then goes to black and nothing happens. No sound or video. If I enable external video player (VLC) it plays the video but no sound (to be expected since it's AC4).

Phone is Pixel 6 Pro.

Emby Android TV is a cluster too. Doesn't work sometimes "Unable to tune channel". When it does work it takes forever to tune, 30-40 seconds.

When watching ATSC 3.0 on my Nvidia shield I have audio. That's because the server will transcode the AC4 audio to AC3 automatically because the Shield does not support AC4 audio directly. When watching ATSC 3.0 on my Apple TV there is no audio. The server direct plays the AC4 audio to my Apple TV for some reason, even when the Apple TV does not support AC4 audio.

Could there be a feature added to always make the server transcode the AC4 audio to AC3?

I would think that would be a great marketing move for Emby, since the only way currently the HD Homerun can decode AC4 audio is by over the cloud.

How long does it take to tune the ATSC3 channels after you select one? Double check your tuner status to make sure it's not falling back to an ATSC1.

It actually should if you are connected directly to a sound system that does.

Hi ebr,

I think you are missing my point.

When I am watching ATSC 3.0 with a shield or my Roku I have sound because the Emby server can decode and then transcodes the AC4 audio to AC3.

When I try to watch ATSC 3.0 on my Apple TV there is no sound because the Emby server direct streams ac4 audio to my Apple TV. The Apple TV or the Emby client app cannot play AC4 directly.

Is there a way to make the Emby server transcode the AC4 audio to AC3 when using my Apple TV?

Like a selection on the server "Always transcode AC4 to AC3".

This feature would be very useful in the time being until AC4 is widely adopted.

Hi.  I understood your main point.  I was just correcting your statement that the Shield would always have to transcode AC4.  With the right setup, it can direct play it.

Your other issue needs to be reported in the Apple TV forum.

Agreed... Up-voted this comment.

Nor does the AC4 play thru Emby Theater for Windows.  The following is to Emby staff's attention, not gbees, pertaining to Emby Theater on Windows 11 with only stereo audio out available.  It's an annoyance each and every time I play an HEVC ATSC 3.0 program, which I always opt for when available.  I finally decided to search for a solution in the forum here.  I haven't found one.  But this thread seemed like a good maybe best place to continue the discussion.

I paid the [insulting] $0.99 Microsoft requires of us for the HEVC codec in Windows 11, so I don't understand why that didn't 'buy me' audio of HEVC videos in Emby Theater for Windows. But with that the case, as to this above ... Almost 2 years later after this astute observation and the only way I can get audio in the latest Release or Beta versions of Emby Theater for Windows when playing HEVC live or recordings of ATSC 3.0 channels off my HDHomeRun 4K is to change the playback Quality [annoyingly] manually and reduce it to a bitrate lower than the source, thereby manually triggering Transcoding.  Which as an aside is problematic when the source quality is 1080p - 4mbps to begin with as the only lower choice to reduce bitrate from that is  720p - 4Mbps or lower, i.e. no 1080p - 3Mbps... but I digress.

So, it seems long overdue to see logic in the server and/or client, wherever needed, to (perhaps an option to configure) automatically trigger transcoding when the source media being played contains AC4 audio.  Further, I don't understand why transcoding of the entire video, or just audio stream alone if that can work, isn't happening when the ATSC 3.0 HEVC programs are 5.1 audio... As my Emby Theater is set to Stereo so why isn't transcoding being activated, anyway?

Much thanx for insight and/or assistance regarding the above, if the option "is in there" but I haven't figured out where and how.  If not available, please make it available.

That's exactly how I'm configured.  I had mentioned at the end "... As my Emby Theater is set to Stereo so why isn't transcoding being activated, anyway?"  But I know my tendency to overly describe things may get lost.  haha

BTW what platform and version of the UI is that screencap from?  I remember seeing the "Audio" option within the left menu from a while ago, or that only on Theater for Linux; which I don't have running presently to check.  Presently the route to audio options for me is "App Settings > Emby Windows > Video Player > Audio Options".

Is it possible transcoding will be triggered for the version of Emby Theater you're using, manually installed I presume, but not the Release or Beta (I run both) version of Theater one gets from the Microsoft Store?  Tho until recently I used to use a manually installed Emby Theater on Windows and everything I described above was the exact same.

Welcome to other ideas.

That was an older version of Theater for Windows I thought you might have been running. I just wanted to verify the audio settings were setup like the picture.

Have you tried the new Emby Theater or Windows that was just released a couple weeks ago in the store?
If not, I would definitely make sure to try this, as it's the unified version of Theater moving forward for Windows.

The new store version is more integrated with Windows and doesn't need/have separate audio settings.

With that said, can you install the store version of Emby, which will be the latest/greatest version of Theater for Windows.

The audio options have been moved to a tab under "Video Player" to make it clear that these audio options apply to video playback.
There might be a top-level Audio Player options in a future update with audio settings for playback of audio items.

BTW, it's no longer called "Theater" - just "Emby" 🙂

Yep, made it a point to say so but yes this is all when I'm running either the latest and greatest Release or Beta of Emby installed from the Windows Store. I even uninstalled the Electron based Emby Theater on this, my new primary workstation/server I built that's taking over all my computing duties.

But I think I'll be reinstalling the legacy Electron base Emby Threater on it.  As I think a point you made is at the heart of the issue: "...as it's the unified version of Theater moving forward for Windows. ... The new store version is more integrated with Windows and doesn't need/have separate audio settings."

I just checked now, and:

1. I do get stereo audio out using my legacy Windows 10 Pro workstation playing non-transcoded 'Direct Play' of HEVC ATSC 3.0 channels with either 5.1 or 2.0 AC4 audio, using an older Electron based Emby Theater. v 3.0.20.

2. On that exact same workstation doing nothing more than stopping the ET video playback (even closing the ET even tho I do not have "Exclusive Audio" checked) and switching to the newest  Store version of Emby player, NO audio is output.

3. Enable transcoding in the new Emby, needing 720p/4Mbps (destroying the ATSC 3.0 HEVC quality), and I get audio.

4. Switch back to the old Electron based Emby Theater, and I get audio out again. ( But for numerous reasons I can't & won't be using that for day to day video playback, nor is it connected to external speakers, nor this, nor that, nor etc...  Using that workstation for Emby playback doesn't work for me.)

So, I'm certain this is not an issue unique to this new Windows 11 Pro workstation I based my comment/suggestion/request on a few days ago.  Does anyone get audio out of 5.1 or 2.0 AC4 audio of HEVC ATSC 3.0 video played by the new unified Emby on a Windows 11 Pro workstation using Direct Play?  If so, we could use a sticky thread tutorial on how that is.

Still thinking if we had a configurable option to trigger transcoding of just the audio when the source is AC4 I think that would be a great work-around.

p.s. I reinstalled Emby Theater v3.0.20 ...

1. on one hand and I'm back to having audio out via Direct Play of HEVC ATSC 3.0 channels with AC4 audio.

2. On the other hand audio & video is so badly out of sync when the channel's audio is 5.1 AC4 it's completely unwatchable; only in-sync when AC4 audio is 2.0/stereo.

3. As application of audio re-sync is not available conditionally, and not applied on a case by case basis configured in the ET UI (why is that?) when the watcher determines it's needed, and one can't configure a server-side sync delay as that is only appropriate for a small subset of channels ....

Nothing in regards to ATSC 3.0 HEVC + AC4 audio is totally workable.

I'm reminded of why I a) hadn't been watching many HEVC channels or recordings in Emby, and b) the aggravations of the past and why I uninstalled the Electron based Emby Theater.  🤦‍♂️
