Questions from new Emby premier lifetime User

Recommended Posts

heypaleblue

Hi all,

Let me start off by saying I am glad to be done with Plex and Emby feels MUCH more consistent if not a little quirky so I bought a lifetime preimer pass, love it. So I'm stoked to be using emby. I started using emby in a VM but noticed my disk ops were bottle-necking emby so I installed Emby on a dedicated machine with the following specs:

  • Intel Core i7-4770K
  • 16GB DDR3 Ram
  • Drives: OS Drive 128GB SSD, DVR Drive 1TB 7200RPM HDD, Media Drive 3TB 7200RPM NAS HDD
  • Operating System: Window 10 Pro Build 1909 Patched all the way up
  • HD Home Run PRIME TV Tuner

while up front everything will be on 1 3TB disk I will be going out later today to buy 2 more 3TB Disks so that each library can live on their own disk.

My Questions concerns are these:

  1. Why is there a considerable lag when loading titles? It takes about 12 seconds for a movie to start playing after I choose play.Full disclosure I'm still copying over media to this server but I don't think that should be an issue.
  2. There are gaps in guide. I can see all the channels my HD Home Run is reporting but some channels have no guide info but will stream.
  3. I have read on the sub that putting in a 10-series GPU helps? Can anyone explain this or let me know where I can go to read more about this / enable?
  4. The android app doesnt seem to be working great. It always gives me the option to sign into connect even though I'm pretty sure I've already done that, It's laggy and I'm not sure if that's my server or the app, other issues I'm not able to articulate quite yet.

does the community have any thoughts on my setup and how I can solve the 4 issues above?

Thanks!

Hi there, can you please discuss an example? Did you setup guide data?

Hi, our hardware section of the community has lots of questions about GPU's:

https://emby.media/community/index.php?/forum/168-hardware/

Have you checked that out? @ may also have some tips. Additionally I would also suggest checking out our hardware acceleration guide:

https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Wiki/wiki/Hardware-Acceleration-Overview

Hi, is this the mobile app, or the TV app?

This only applies to transcoding. Your delay in start of playback may be related to that. You want try an direct play as much as you can. This will depend on multiple factors. The first thing you need to ensure is that all of the apps and server, have direct access to the media. Check your network and library setup. Then each app will need to be able support the playback of your media.

Direct Access, what do you mean? Didn't I achieve that when I moved my emby setup to a dedicated machine and copied my media to local disks instead of having emby access media via a mapped drive?

1. Media Playback
I imagine this is the thread for this issue. I am simply opening Videos from local Disks on the EMBY Server. I expect that it should be take only a second or 2 for media to start but I can count to 7 mississippi style before media loads.

I Did not see any error messages

I am Using

logs attached, I generated these logs by stopping emby, deleting the log dirs and restart emby and capturing these logs.

Sample Play backs are

Futurama S1E1 Pilot aroun 14:58 Log time

Boston LegalS2E25 Squid Pro Quo around 14:56 log time

2. Missing Guide Information.

Some channels are just channels with not guide information. I know these channels were working fine when I was using Plex media server as recently as last week. a good example is channel 13, KERA HD should have guide info. It's always worked up to this point. I've cycled through guide providers and am not really having much luck. I am plugged into a converter box provide by my ISP specially for IP TV applications. Screenshot attached.

3. Hardware encoding.

Thanks I'll dig into this!

4. The App

It's the mobile app. I'm using the emby app on android 9 and it kinda feels like you ask the app to do "A" and while it's doing that you can switch back to the home screen and go into another media library but the app is still doing "A" in the semi-background cause the app to ultimately become unstable and require a restart. This behavior has been consistent betwee a Galaxy s8+ and a Galaxy A20

As expected, it's transcoding. You're running tests in the web app. The browser players don't support a wide range of media. I this case, it looks like the container isn't supported.

TranscodeReasons=ContainerNotSupported

Which makes sense, because it's an avi with an Xvid codec. It's an antiquated container. The delay you're having is because the video is being transcoded.

So what would you suggest to improve performace? The Addition of a supported GPU? Also, If I do my conversions with Handbrake and MakeMKV, am I good to go or should i be looking at certain settings?

You can probably just use handbrake and convert them to h264 in an MP4 container. The audio is fine, so just pas that through.

Yeah so referencing the Direct Play Media Formats Section of this article ) (Citation) it looks like the way handbrake is ripping my movies should enable me to direct play all my titles. Is there anything I might be missing?

also thank you so much for the quick response and all the help. Its more appreciated than you know. whoops added setting screenshot

Wait THis makes no sense. You said and the logs are report an old/bad container, but when I look at the dashboard, it says it's direct playing?

edit, yeah are we sure this is the culprit? I'm testing a bunch of different media in my library and basically everything is coming back as direct playing but the lag is still there.

The android mobile app has a better player. In your log, you were using a web browser. Totally different.

Dumb question, would it be worth trying Emby Theater instead of a browser ? better codecs/direct play/something ?

It's the same player in the android mobile app. That's why it's working well with that app. Other apps/devices might also have trouble with those videos.

I zoomed through the thread to see if any of these points were made and I didn't see anything. Hopefully some of these points might help you:

- Yes, data copying can cause problems and be a massive bottleneck. I ran a Haswell for my second personal Emby Server. It tends to keep the transcoding, external data connections and internal data connections all on the first core. This arch type was before you could manually assign cores to tasks. I'd agree with your first kneejerk assumption that this is the main problem.

- Emby can be very --- problematic when a fledgling library. Until it grabs all the metadata for the series you're adding/moving/uploading/downloading it can sometimes prioritize this on the bus. Haswell's don't have a huge FEB (Front End Bus) unless you're working from one heck of a good motherboard from its time.

- Device you're streaming to can be a big issue too. It took some time to find devices that I liked for this purpose. You have to make sure the device you're streaming to handles the format of your videos. It looks like you have AVCs there and thats fairly tried and true across a lot of devices; but not Androids running ICS (v4.0 or lower). I would honestly hesitate to give Android a "steal of approval" for anything under Android v6.0.

- I would investigate setting up Emby to not transcode your videos as best as possible. I cant find the option just now, but I recall there being a "Play as is" option someplace.

- I didn't see anything about your GPU. What are you using for transcoding?

Also, since you're starting up, I'd HIGHLY recommend looking at Stablebit as your raid software. I'm reminded of this because I just had a long discussion with a friend today who is having data recovery issues because he thought using Microsoft Storage Space was a good raid setup. I'm considering writing a thread about this specifically.

1. Data Copying and 2. Library

Ugh then it looks like I have 35 mins left until all my media is done pushing to the server  to see how big of a factor this is. While I have your eyes, What do you think about doing a new build on AMD Chips? I was thinking about doing a build based on AMD Ryzen 5 Generation 2 chips. I was thinking about:

AMD Ryzen 5 2600 2.4GHz 6 Core

ASRock Fatal1ty B450 Gaming-ITX Mobo

with 16GB of ram and then all my normal drives and what not.

3. Android Version

Then it seems like I'm good to go in this department because all my devices are version 9. I've also gone in and looked to see that RAM on my android devices aren't an issue and it looks like it's not.

4.Make Emby Not Transcribe

I was actually looking into this earlier and the forums posts I was reading, while admittedly were from 2016, indicated this wasn't possible as emby will make the best call. in any case I will keep looking into this.

5.What am I using to transcode?

to the best of my knowledge It's just my processors built in graphics but something tells me if I really look into this I'll discovering I'm doing software rendering. I'm probably gonna look into a cheap graphics card to accelerate rendering/transcoding not a 10-series card that feels like it's geared more towards gaming

hmmm Okay let me get home and I will run these tests again. From what I can see this issue really only seems to be happening with my android devices. but to be fair my library is still being downloaded from my NAS to the local drives on my computer.

Everything is finish and a final library scan has been completed.

  • I ripped a sample movie using setting I believe support direct playback (see screenshot ConversionSetting)
  • I am test 2 streams 1 on an Android Smartphone running android 9 over cellular connection and the other is my desktop using firefox
  • I am streaming 2 1080p movies at 6Mbps (See Screenshot StreamStats)
  • When opening the movies, My GPU was pegged at 70% while the movies were transcoding ahead of their stream. My batman stream (desktop) keeps cutting in an out.

What makes no sense is why these things are transcoding if I'm ripping them correctly. AS well, media that the dashboard that says is direct playing has a lag before opening.

From the logs:

12:20 Log Time - Opened Cedar Rapids (ripped with what I believe are settings that enable direct play back) from my android 9.0 phone over cellular connection. A lag in opening was present and it's chopped out 1-2. It says it's transcoding now and I'm not sure why

12:24 Log Time - opened Another Stream session Boston Legal, Which previous was reporting as direct playing and now it's saying it's transcoding.

without consistency from Emby I'm not really sure what's going on how I can fix this. Can anyone suggest a settings profile handbrake? I've attached logs and the best thing I can think of at this point is either I'm supplying the wrong settings in handbrake OR my hardware can't handle 2x HD streams or even really multiple streams at once which mean I should probably upgrade my hardware.

Now it's saying the bitrate is too high. Look in the app settings and see if there's limit set. Also, check the user profile settings in the server, to see if there's a limit set. How is the phone connecting to the network?
