Hello team,

As I haven't done things carefully, I have updated the DSM to 7.1.x and reinstalled Emby community package without following your procedure. @Carlo

I understand that currently, there is a conflict between my old Emby instance and the new one that is running on something I am no longer able to update or control.

I have found the new Emby instance in /volume1/@appdata/EmbyServer.

The point is I don't have /volume1/Emby folder (I used default path from previous installation). I found files in /volume1/@appstore/EmbyServer but this not fits to your procedure.

From my point of view, the missing part is the copy command. As you mentionned on a post above "Not @appstore but @appdata", I don't know from where I should get the data to copy.

Could you please help me identifying files to delete / copy in order to be able to use the new Emby instance ?

@FlavKpronewhat's underneath /volume1/@appdata/EmbyServer ?

What version of Emby Server did you have before, do you know?

Hey Team,

Just wanted to say thank you very much for this guide!

I upgraded to DSM 7 without following any of the early steps, and wiped my Emby settings. The guide was really easy to follow and seems to have fixed everything for me!

Thanks you!

I've been trying to migrate to DSM7 on my Synology DS415+, however, I am not successfull when trying to install Emby on the updated NAS. I've tried with the package Center, and with the manueal install and choosing the appropriate file (64 bit I beleive is the right one for INTEL Atom C2538?😞

I get the same error on both methods:

Screenshot2024-03-09141607.png.0c1762d6374e0c3098baf592248c7122.png

It has to be said, that I didn't follow the instructions, until I realized that things wasn't working... I simply upgraded everything in the DSM ui, and then realized that emby wasn't working, and then came here...

Home you guys can help?

Hi, what version of DSM are you on?

I've now reverted back to "DSM 6.2.4-25556 Update 7".

But i tried to install DSM 7, don't know exactly which version, but it said I was fully updated, so I would assume it was 7.1.1-42962 Update 6.

Were you trying to install via package center or by manual package upload?

You said you were on DSM 7.1. Are you able to update to DSM 7 .2?

No, didn't seem like that was available for the DS415+

Posted

It's not available directly on the DS415+ but you may still be able to install it. Try pulling down from Synology the DSM version for the 920+ and give that a shot installing it. The DS415+ and the DS900+ normally run the same OS version and are part of the same family of 4 Bay NAS. Try downloading DSM 7.2.1 by picking the 920+ and let us know how you make out installing that on your NAS.

Using rsync seems better than the cp command in the instructions. Copying all my Emby media took a couple days.

rsync -av --partial --progress /volume1/Emby/ /volume1/@appdata/EmbyServer/

*nitpick aside, the instructions worked well and Emby seems to be running great after going from DSM 6 to DSM 7.2

For local copies not involving a network, cp is normally about 20% faster than rsync.
rsync will checksum every file it touches regardless if it doesn't exist on the destination which is overhead not needed.
rsync also has issues on large data sets as it holds everything in memory, hence why rclone is often used instead of rsync.

But the biggest reason I'd use cp locally is that it can do lightning quick data copies on certain file systems as it won't actually copy data but instead use a snapshot of the existing data-saving storage space as well. It's done about as fast as you hit the enter key. A couple of examples would be ZFS and BTRSF. CP will run circles around rsync on a copy-on-write file system like this. Doesn't apply to most Synology NAS but if using ZFS especially with compression on then using ZFS to make snap shots across computers is faster yet as it moves blocks of already compressed data that's already checksummed.

But mainly, I was just trying to keep things as simple as possible to follow

I think I may need some help with this, as I think I've done everything as directions said, and I still don't see my libraries or working plugins, though my users are there.  I'm also not sure if it's not a Synology issue, as the Emby section is, well....kind of blank.  I can re-install the apk, but it doesn't seem to fix it, and I can't UNinstall anything.

Yet if I check in Emby itself, it says the server was installed.

No library, but I have my users.  And the images above.  I did Putty, I transferred over everything a few times now, fixed the accounts, all of it.  But I'm wondering if Synology didn't uninstall Emby cleanly before I updated to 7, because it both says it installed but doesn't say it's installed. @Carlo

When did you upgrade from DSM 6?
What DSM version did you update to?
What NAS do you have?

I just upgraded yesterday on my DS1618+, following the instructions.  I updated to the newest Emby, uninstalled, then upgraded DSM 6 to DSM 7.1.1-42962 Update 7, which says it's the most up to date, then re-installed Emby manually, and on from there.  But I really am guessing Synology didn't uninstall the Ember server correctly when I first did it.  I have my users, and it says it's installed, but all of my libraries just exist as blank images, and nothing else.  Synology is just weirdly blank when I click on the Emby server app.  I can SEE things installed, but they also seem to have not installed properly, and I'm wondering if I need to SSH in to delete the install completely.

I just decided to try cleaning out the Emby install through SSH, and all I could find was EmbyServer.  Deleted all of those instances.  It finally vanished from the Synology installed apps, but now if I try to install it manually or through the package center, it tells me port 8096 is conflicting somehow?

Now I'm definitely stumped.

I think I've fixed it, so for future reference:

I had to use Putty to dig in further and delete all EmbyServer instances. Basically from another post:

1. Navigate to /volume1/@appstore then delete the application you want to remove.

2. Navigate to /var/packages see if there is a folder named the same as your app and remove it

3. Navigate to /usr/local see if there is a folder named the same as your app and remove it

So, cd /volume1/@appstore, and if I saw Embyserver, rm -r EmbyServer, rinse and repeat for all three. I think I only had to delete out of the @appstore folder though.

I then tried to install Emby from the app store, and it gave me that port error, so I went looking to see what was running, and....somehow EmbyServer was still ghosting around.  I followed the directions in this image to find EmbyServer.sc to delete it:

image.jpeg.07b0af7dba5f1845e93ee33c6f7c8e1f.jpeg

Still gave me the error, so I ran to find what was on the port.

netstat -lnt | tail -n+3 | awk '{print $1 "\t" $4 "\t" $6}'

I had to do these various things a few times, rebooting the NAS, until I could finally manually install the beta server without getting that port error.  I then copied everything over, fixed the owners, and it seems to finally be working, though the Emby package in Synology still looks weirdly blank.  I don't know how that can be solved.

Whatever it was, I seem to have cleaned it out and gotten Emby running.  It just took a lot of Googling about SSH to figure out what was stuck.

Thanks for the detailed instructions.

Another, simpler method is to uninstall the program via package center, then in SSH after going sudo, remove the app folder located under /volume1/@appstore.

I couldn't uninstall it in package center.  That was literally the problem I pointed out in my first post; the application as installed on my Synology continues to look bizarre, but since it otherwise works, I'm leaving it.

This is what it looks like no matter how many times I went in and used SSH to delete it all, then re-installed it manually (since doing it through Synology itself kept giving me the port error, even when I kept checking everything possible to see nothing running on it.)  So I've given up.  It works, even though it looks broken.

Only attempt if comfortable using SSH, sudo and know at least the basic Linux commands to perform what's described below.
I'm not providing specific commands to blindly follow as this shouldn't be performed without some basic understanding what is being done.

Here are the steps to try and fix your Emby Server installation. Note a restore from backup is a possibility so it's vital to have a verified backup of your NAS.

  • Before we start:
    Shut down Emby Server.
Verify you have a recent backup to revert to or perform a backup of your NAS at this time.
If using either ZFS or BTRFS file system, take a snapshot. (this will make reverting super easy if needed).
Using SSH, rename /volume1/@appdata/EmbyServer to /volume1/@appdata/EmbyServer-original. (modify location if needed for your system)

  • Let's try installing:
In Package Manager, click the "Install" button for Emby Server (this will install an older version).
    Exit and restart Package Manager.
If Emby Server is installed, move on to the next step.
Using Package Manager, manually install the latest Emby Server version downloaded from our website.
Install the downloaded Emby Server file using Package Manager.
    Exit and restart Package Manager.
If Emby Server is installed, move on to the next step.
If Emby Server is NOT installed, skip to the last step about reverting.

  • Getting the latest version:
    Stop Emby Server.
Use SSH to copy /volume1/@appdata/EmbyServer-original overtop /volume1/@appdata/EmbyServer.
Using Package Manager, manually install the latest Emby Server version downloaded from our website.
    Exit and restart Package Manager.
If Emby Server is installed and working, you're all set! (quit following instructions).
If you still have problems, skip to the last step about reverting.

  • Reverting back (only if problems exist):
If you took a snapshot, revert it and restart your NAS.
If no snapshot is available to use, restore your NAS from backup.

Let me know if you have any questions about these steps.
