and I deleted the system config xml file as discussed, and restarted server with no difference.

the entire directory is open to  HomeGroupUser$ with read/write access

 

 

 

ARGUH... That must have been the problem.  

Went to the Users/permissions window, and 

 

I updated them, so hopefully all will rebuild well this time.

they didnt have permissions, as the user was old, and the groups did not appear in them before.

 

hopefully will work fine... will advise

yes, that was the issue.  added permissions there for the main user (general) and it worked fine now.
