Are Emby smart playlists supposed to be working now? Using dynamic nodes, I don't see them anywhere. I have a bunch of them in Emby. 9.4.15 of your addon.

Regarding views, here's what I don't get. Dynamic mode. So, I go to a given Emby library via it's synamic node, say, Archive Movies. Then I pick folder. That is my list of genres, it's list view type, you can't change it, fine. Now I pick a genre, say 3D which is a folder. Now I have a list view type of 3D movies in my Emby library. On the Emby server, all those movies are in fact in the 3D folder. Yet, my only choice is list view again despite in list view being able to see movie information. That seems wrong, seems like maybe nextgen is still considering the content to be a folder when it is in fact video files?

xsp are available for synced content only and the option must be enabled in plugin's config menu.

First, as you are using dynamic nodes, I would recommend an update to 10.X. I fixed lot's of issues related to dynamic content.

Second, not sure why you use dynamic modes. I recommend syncing content and use dynamic nodes only for content not possible to be integrated into Kodi.

Third, if you use dynamic nodes for not supported views (like folders), I still recommend syncing content. Dynamic nodes for synced content uses a hybrid mode and still benefit from syncing.

Finally, I'll check the views again, but my dev version is 10.X and I'll not modify that in 9.X.

9.X is stable/beta and will not get major changes, only bugfixes.

Edit:

I checked the folder view (with hybrid dynamic nodes) with my custom skin and I can change it. I continue testing...

Different user here, but I just happened to come to ask some questions about this area as well.

In response that second point, I was hoping to use dynamic nodes because it is a very clean way to keep content of the same type segregated in skins. For example, I have a main library for "Movies" that is set to type movies. Then I also have a second library "Movies - Cartoons" that is also set to type movies. The problem is that if I sync both of them, they all wind up in the main movies view in my skin. And I would ideally like to keep those separate. Using dynamic nodes would be a perfect solution to that, if I could get it to work that is. I currently have 32 libraries in Emby. But right now I only sync Movies, TV, and Music. Everything else I would like to handle through separate menus and sub-menus ideally via dynamic nodes.

So that's what I actually came here to ask about. I have tried really hard to follow the directions, but I cannot get media to play via the dynamic nodes menus unless I already have that data synced. I'm really hoping I screwed something simple up in the installation/setup. Or is that just the way this works? What happens when I choose "Movies - Cartoons" via the dynamic node menu, I see everything exactly as I would like it. I mean it's perfect. It takes me right through the menus to the point where I would hit play to see the movie.

But when I hit play, it's actually "resume" in the skin I use,  I get an error stating "Playback failed [OK] One or more items failed to play. Check the log file for more information about this message." I cannot figure out how to get it to work other than by syncing the extra libraries. If I sync the libraries, it works great. But then my movies menu is loaded with cartoons and concerts and etc. And my TV gets loaded with anime and cartoon episodes.

Should media play via dynamic nodes even if it is not synced? If so, is there a set of directions somewhere that explains how that would be set up? This is one of two areas that is keeping my Kodi install from just being perfect for me. Based on your previous comment I might try 10x to see if that helps. But any help/insight you can offer that would get this to work be greatly appreciated.

Sure, you could also try 9.X beta if you don't want upgrade to 10.x.

I don't wanna review issues probably already fixed.

If the issue still exists, I need a kodi.log for review.

Not if you customize your skin. There are lot's of postings if you don't know how to do it.

So still no need for dynamic nodes at this point, not saying it's wrong what you are doing.

I don't see a need to sync them is why, it's not instant, trips up here and there, and there's just no benefit for me. Dynamic nodes work great for me. I don't have a need to store anything on OSMC machine.

I can update to 10.x, the problem for me is it says Kodi 20 for now. the ominous warning says "Kodi 20 support will be dropped at some point.". That implies it won't support 20 down the line. I use OSMC, I will not be updating to 21 until OSMC is ready for 21. I don't want to get into a situation where I'm stuck on 20 but only 21 is supported and now nextgen doesn't work until it is. Perhaps I am incorrect on this though.

Dynamic nodes are the best reason to use this "plugin" to me. I don't want 2 sets of data.

Rather than take anymore of your time, since you said it should work I reinstalled from scratch to a new installation. I tried with both 9.x stable and 10.x. And sure enough, it works on both even after installing the Aeon MQ9 Mod. So I must have broken something along the way in my original installation. As I slowly add back all my add-ons and customizations, I'll keep an eye out for it breaking and post if it happens again.

I'm just beginning to put all my customizations back in, but for now it is working beautifully. And I want to say, you seem to be be pushing back on the idea by having dynamic modes working really adds a lot to the setup. It's so nice to have all them Emby categorizations available without having to try to reinvent them with custom nodes or playlists. And being able easily access them from multiple clients make rolling it out much easier.

Just my two cents there. Dynamic nodes just add so much to the setup when they don't have to part of the synced nodes. That's not meant as criticism or to be argumentative at all. I really do appreciate the work you're doing here.

Just a snippet from my log - but when opening kodi each new day im getting this sync behaviour that is extremely slow. It wont sync any new content until its done, and in the top cornmer it moves 1 movie at a time every 2 seconds. Fresh install. Nothing is being edited with the sets on emby, yet every day now it is doing this?

Did you try 9.4.18 beta? I fixed some reported sync issues by this version. Even if your snippet doesn't show any indicators of a bug, probably you are affected. I need the complete log for review.

I could imagine, there is a bug and the init sync starting over and over again due an incomplete sync/crash.

About dynamic nodes, again it's absolutely fine using them. I personally do not use them cause they have several drawbacks. First and that's main reason for me, they have poor performance. You probably don't have this issue as you use small to medium sized libraries. If you have several thousands movies etc. you will see they are very slow compared with synced nodes cause each view is build on the fly.

Second, Kodi integration of dynamic nodes is not perfect in a way Kodi could handle metadata on synced content.

Third, in 9.X the dynamic nodes are not abstracted by content type. Means a dynamic audio/photo node uses workarounds to keep Kodi playlists on track.

e.g. audio content should be added to Kodi's music playlists and not video playlist. Without the workaround, Kodi would add everything to video playlists.

In 10.X I addressed the issue and 99% is solved by the new design. However e.g. a mixed Emby library (especially in folder view) still uses "magic" to keep the content straight.

4th, external plugins/skins cannot benefit from dynamic nodes and you might lose functions.

I could continue, but you see it's not optimal. Mostly edge cases but sooner or later if you focus on small details, you will see the difference between synced and dynamic nodes.

In 10.X I squeezed the best out of the dynamic nodes, if you have suggestions for improvement, I'm open for it.

btw. 10.X will drop Kodi 20 support when I fully integrate Kodi 21 new multiversion selection. This will require database changes.

I had a quick look and haven't found any crashes yet. This happens every time you start Kodi? Even if you start it two times in a row? I need to rule out Emby server is definitely not rebuilding the boxsets for some (unknown) reason cause if so, it would be a correct behavior of the plugin.

Just each time i start it the following day. I'll monitor it tomorrow to see what happens, but i havent noticed anything on emby itself changing.

Yes, but following day something could have changed on Emby server. You need to restart Kodi 2 times directly in a row.

I still review your log searching for a pattern. Something seems to be odd, looks like in a loop for some reason I don't know yet.

EDIT:

I found 2 minor bugs both will be fixed in next version, but neither could be directly related to the issue.

Hello quickmic,

I’ve a problem with sync of tvshows. Many of the tvshows are without any episodes.

I tested different versions of the addon (9.x ; 10.x) including reset of kodi database with the same result.

I currently use:

-        Emby Server 4.8.1.0 in a docker container

-        Kodi 20.4 (Nigtly kodi-20240218-2de15467-Nexus-arm64-v8a.apk, because there is a bug in 20.4 stable with harmony remotes)

-        Emby For Kodi Next Gen 9.4.18

Can you take a look at this?

Here is my log file:

The log is absolutely clean.

Maybe a permission issue on Emby server. Didi you try an Admin account for Kodi?

For a deeper look, I need a test account on your sever.

I just don't need any of the features you are saying I get with sync.

So, for Kodi 21, if I am running Kodi 20 and stuck on Kodi 20, let's assume this. If I am also using V10 of nextgen, and, you update it for 21 and it no longer supports 20, what happens to my current install? Does it stop working?

I fi move to 10, I want to make sure the system will keep working even once you stop Kodi 20 support is the idea here.

Isn't it obvious? Any version running on Kodi 20 will not stop working out of the blue. At some point you cannot update to newer versions with Kodi 20.

@quickmic

Hi, I figured out what is causing the "playback failed" problem I was originally reporting with dynamic libraries. Playback will fail if you select "more information" instead of directly selecting "play."

Set the default video action under Settings > Media > Videos > Default Selection Action to Play and it works fine. But set it to Show Information and then select Play or Resume when the information dialog is shown and playback will fail with the message "Playback failed [OK] One or more items failed to play. Check the log file for more information about this message." You can test this quite easily by selecting Choose. Play from there works. Play after more information doesn't.

It dos not appear this is a skin problem as I tested with several different skins and it happened in all of them. And it's important to note, if the library is synced it will work fine even if you access videos through the dynamic library menu. It only fails if the library is not synced and you select show information before play.

Hope this makes sense.

Sorry, one more quick note. Even though this is the 9x thread, I'm testing in 10.x now based on your previous suggestions. While I assume this is the same for 9.x, a 10.x solution would be great.

Yes, I assume so too. I'll check it.

I just checked with 10.X and estuary mod v2 on Kodi 21. No resume, dynamic node, unsynced content via plugin run menu.

No problem.

I need a kodi.log for review.

I'll check the log, but what you reporting sounds like a Kodi 20 bug.

I checked the log, you could try disable path substitution.
