When a user changes files, do they have an expectation that the state of a movie they are in the middle of watching would be maintained? The number of movies that show up in the continue watching, where state is really important, is a fraction of total movies, so the probability of change impacting a user is a function of in-progress vs. total. Do you collect usage telemetry on use, that can turn an opinion into fact?

I'll take a look at changing the cover to show differences in resolution.

Hi.  It is all watched state - not just in-progress.  So keeping track of everything  you have fully watched.  Plus things like ones marked as favorites.

  1. Use a "multi versioning plugin", that seems to be an idea not something that exists.

It does exist.

  1. does not work with popular content acquisition tools that do not support multiple formats per folder.

If you acquire your media legally, you will cease to have this problem.

With HDR to SDR tone mapping in the current Beta inching closer to release this issue will likely be a thing of the past for those people who configure this and have a decent GPU.  There likely won't be a need to keep both the 4K/HDR and 1080 versions as just the 4KHDR would be needed.

For those less fortunate that will continue to require multiple versions there is yet another way to handle this but is more hands on.

Emby supports folder access and this could be used to help handle this in many situations.

For example you could have:
1. D:\Movies  (all common movies go here)
2. D:\4K Movies (only 4K movies go here that aren't in Movies)
3. D:\HD Movies (only non 4K movies go here that match a 4K version)

You now grant everyone access to the first but then only give this person access to option 2 or 3.
This person will only get the movie one time this way and will get either the 4K or HD version.
