Ok not sure if my tablet & phone are possessed but I have tried to log into the app once again and now the same message is back, It finds my server but won't connect?

Any ideas at all ?

It's ok I fixed the issue once and for all, my malware finder software for some reason after doing scans on the system would read the server as malware (no idea why) and wouldn't allow the server to fully restart after upgrades, I had to contact the company and get an exception made now it works fine..

Hi, welcome. You might want to check out our wiki on Connectivity:

https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Wiki/wiki/Connectivity

It goes over some troubleshooting steps you can try. Let us know how things go. Thanks.

Hi! As per today, I have the same problem.

On my tablet, version installed: 2.6.11

When inside of my network there's no problem. Whenever I use the app, direct web access or the connect portal.

When outside:

Using the app trying to login with with connect, after login, it shows the server listing and when I choose my server, it shows the following error: "we're unable to connect to the selected server right now..."

If I use the web connect portal "app.emby.media" it shows the same error.

If I access through the public address/dns name "http://mydns:8092"or "https://mydns:8920" it works without problem.

On the router, those two ports are correctly forwarded.

Already took a look at the connectivity page and all seems ok.

Any thoughts? That's holding me back on my car implementation.

Note: If I start VPN on the laptop, for example, the "app.emby.media" portal with connect logically starts working.

I went to app.emby.media, logged in, and do not see my server listed.

I've been having this same problem recently. Tonight, I decided to actually spend some time investigating.

Here's what I found:

Using the Emby app on my iPhone, I cannot connect to my server from outside of my network if I have the Emby server setup to use HTTPS. When I have my server setup to use HTTPS, I get the same message that the OP reported, "Unable to connect to selected server .. blah blah blah".  You can tell if your server is setup to use HTTPS by looking at the "Remote Access" address reported on the main page of your dashboard.  If the remote access address starts with "https", then your system is setup to use HTTPS.  If the remote access address starts with "http" (no s at the end), then your system is NOT setup to use HTTPS.

To fix the problem:

I currently disabled HTTPS on my Emby server.  Go to the Advanced settings on the dashboard, and UNCHECK "Report https as external address".  After this change, I can once again access my server from outside of my network using the Emby app.

Hi, good investigation, yes. You're correct. In order to use https with the ios app right now you would need to have a cert from a trusted authority.

I'm having issues similar to above. Everything works fine in my LAN. I'm using the Android app. I can access the server externally through IP in a web browser but can not through the app. When I log in with connect it tells me invalid user, and can't connect to server when I enter its IP. But doing that when in my LAN it works fine. Using 3.0.6 on the server and latest app.

Sounds like a router setup issue.  Please go through the troubleshooting steps here and let us know where you get hung up: https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Wiki/wiki/Connectivity

To people that are experiencing HTTPS issues. What happens if you post your entire PEM chain inside that site?

https://tools.keycdn.com/ssl

Any errors? Can you post screens?

There shouldn't be anymore https issues, hopefully, now that we added explicit support for self-signed certs.

@ Luke            I have the port forwarded on my windows 7, per instructions in wiki. i'm using P.I.A as my VPN. and everything works great when connected to wifi. but away from home i can't connect. my external address is same as vpn's, Could vpn be blocking me from connecting away from home? Is there away around this Luke? And https is not enabled in dashboard.

Have you already tested port forwarding sites?

http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/

There, put yout IP (or DNS name) and your Emby port that you are trying to connect.

If it is reachable... the only thing left is what Luke said, to make sure server is registered in Emby Connect

Well you don't have to use Emby Connect, but yet, please tell us the results of the port forwarding test above. Thanks.

Yes just tested and it says port is open.

If you look at the front page of your Emby Server dashboard, it will display your remote address. Is this address correct? This is the address the app will attempt to use when signing in with Emby Connect.
