New Windows App? Beta and Release?

We are the opposite and tend to watch more live iptv than movies.

I don’t use emby theater too much for this as find kodi’s simpleiptv much easier although are starting to use emby more and are loving the horizontal display mode and the ability to record.

Have even caught the other half using emby instead of kodi!

Cant wait to see the new app, hopefully it still allows external players but to be honest the built in MPV is pretty darn good.

Would also like to see a setting to auto select the highest quality default language audio stream like other players.

Hi Luke, re: your comment below will there still be an option to download a full version other than from the MS Store?

WIll the new app still have an option for the desktop horizontal layout?

Are you able to give us a preview of the changes? 

Ive finally got Theater running perfect, hope there's not too many changes.

What does the current MS Store version have that is better than the Desktop?

it will look exactly the same as the current desktop app, so everything will be familiar. It will definitely be available through the store. Whether there will be sideload builds published is undecided at this point.

After complaining that theatre wasn’t as good as WMC for a long time I’ve had to eat my words.

Theater in horizontal mode with all user options turned on I.e. backdrops etc looks so much better, is lightning fast and I can’t imagine the unified app could get any better.

Man that is really disappointing to hear. I was really hoping for more customization options similar to what we had with MB2/WMC.

Being able to swap from theme to theme was so much fun, and added some much variety to this product.

Having to look at the same boring interface with no way to change it from time is getting really old.

 Luke your great, but I think you know what I am talking about.......

The current emby theater app has one theme/style and a few color options changes.

I'm talking about the 5-6 totally different themes that had multiple views, style options like were available with MB2/WMC.

Take a look at my history on these forums. I've been complaining about the boring plain look of theater for like 5-6 years.

These are not themes in my opinion. They are color palette changes. Not the same thing in my book.

For those of us who don't use the store or have it disabled for whatever reason, it would be a disaster if there's no option to install a standard windows app. Can you give some certainty here?

I agree I don’t use the store either and a standard app that can be downloaded and installed is my preference. It’s not really sideloading

I don't think it's going to be exclusively in the store. It just means the same app will be in all download locations. It's going to have two video players and different UI software which will make it universal.

Now you keep crazy talk like this away from this here forum. Dev's think all we want is for every app took 100% the same. No choices, options, or customization. To suggest otherwise is nonsense. lol

I'm joking clearly. I've been unhappy with the lack of customization for the product since they killed MB3/WMC.

The possibility of using skins used to be available, but the lack of development finally ended that. The new app will be using different UI software, so I was wondering if skin development and implementation might be easier. Electron isn't very good, and it clashes with something that mpv uses. Libplacebo will eventually replace that and this issue will be eradicated. But Theater will be long past that by the time that happens. I have a feeling that the skin development will have a greater possibility in the new app.

I do not code in anyway, I am only an end user, so much of what you said is over my head honestly.

I just know from past question I have asked about this topic is that they (Dev team) want their product to be a "cohesive experience" across all platforms.

I think my only hope is that other users here will try and create skins/themes.

ET for linux and ET for windows desktop are the same. The Windows Store version is similar, it also checks Premiere status periodically, but the difference is that updates come from the store and not our servers.

For Linux, there's a strong chance we will revamp the app later this year after Windows, but that's still to be determined.

Yeah Cheese is one of the old WMC theme creators that's been around for a long time. Back from before Emby was rebrand from MB3. I've seen his work on this updated versions of his old WMC theme, but it's been 7 years.......All the other old theme creators , soaltaker, thogsoft(sp), ect are not around much anymore, if at all.

I can only hope that with this new release of a new theater app that someone out there takes up the challenge and puts together a few good skins.

They're different operating systems. Linux doesn't have a 'store' so this doesn't apply. This is only about the Windows app. The Linux app will have differences. Currently,  both are using mpv as their player and using electron. The windows store app is entirely different, and uses the stock windows video player. The intention the 'unification' is to align the store app with the others. To do this, the Windows app will be using a customized Windows player and a UI software that can be used on multiple platforms (not sure if Linux supports it). The initial 'new' app will still use mpv but will also use the Windows media foundation. This will allow the option of full support for Dolby Vision and other media. Yes, Windows HDR supports all forms of HDR with the correct plug-ins/extensions. Dolby labs has a DV media platform extension.
