Audio sync ideas of interest that may apply to someone's setup:

Cable, HDMI issues possibly contributing to delays:

Well, yes, some of those tips may work for some setups. In my case it's BT sync delay that's the problem...

But why resort to all that when a simple feature that so many players have could mitigate the issue?

Gen,

What player software is actually playing back the mkv media in Emby Theater?  I think Emby transcoding does not covert to mkv file format.

  1. Doesn't it convert mostly to AAC in mp4 file type?  I think mkv playback, when it's possible, goes direct playback for the player software that is working either in a browser or inside the TV App.
  2. If audio sync is not working, doesn't that mean the TV App or computer browser software player is not supporting this feature?
  3. Isn't Emby just delivering the direct play mkv file when Emby is notified that direct play is possible?
  4. Then isn't the audio sync control something that happens with TV App or the Browser and not really an Emby feature?
  5. Or does Emby have to update the metadata so that audio sync is supported?

I don't know these answers, but it seems audio sync is not just a situation to tweak with Emby to get it to work.  Are there not other player applications involved?

Does anyone know if any of this is valid?

Guys!

I've rarely been more confused from a conversation like from this one. Almost every participant has their very own specific view, understanding and expectations - which is not unusual at all, but what's kind-of hilarious is that participants do not only share the same common denominator (being able to adjust A/V delay in Emby Theater for Windows), but also sharing the exact same blind spot about it...

It's so weird that I even feel like I should apologize for the case that I'd be missing or misunderstanding something. Otherwise I'd like to gladly inform you that Emby Theater Windows does provide an option to configure audio delay (positive and negative)!

It's there for years already and the same setting exists in the new Emby Windows beta

There's no adjustment possible during playback (via hotkeys like someone suggested), but the feature exists and is working.

It's fine for making adjustments to accomodate for latency differences in local audio and video paths - which are typically of rather static nature.

What it's not intended for is the mentioned use case of fixing/adjusting for incorrectly authored media files. If someone has corrupted or flawed videos, there are tools available to fix them up, even before adding them to your library. Emby has clients for more than 20 different platforms and it doesn't make sense to implement video editing and fixing features in every single one of them
From my personal point of view, this is way beyond the scope of Emby.

On the other side, allowing adjustments for A/V delay to compensate for software/hardware behavior on a client, is definitely a basic and elementatry feature and we have that for quite a while in ET Windows.

Where & how is this done in the Emby app that is running on my Chromecast dongle (which is how I stream to my big screen from my Emby server)? That "Emby Theater" settings section does not exist in my setup.

Only Emby Theater Windows has that - which is what most people here were asking about (this is the "Emby Theater" forum)

I'm on Android, and though it *is* the wrong sub (I came here through googling) it doesn't mean the need isn't more general. Also, from experience what having watched countless videos over the years, nothing beats an in-player fix. And that's why players always have it getting and center instead on burying it in the preferences.

I suspect at least some of us wandered over here after searching "audio delay," don't use Emby Theater Windows, and were just chiming in. Regardless, how shall we ask you to implement this in other Emby playback apps/platforms?

I apologize for the typos in my previous post, can't edit it.

I mentioned that having it in-player is better because I've found different files requiring different sync settings. However reflecting on it it seems silly to have to stop watching, go in settings to find the specific one, adjust it, restart the video, check if it's ok, go back to settings etc etc... Kodi handles it beautifully, allowing you to change the delay while the video is playing. Makes setting it a breeze.

When you play those files locally on a Windows machine with VLC or Windows Media Player - does that require different audio delay values as well? Does it even require any settings to make?

I didn't understand the question

  1. When you play your media files on the same Windows machine with Windows Media Player - do you need to configure any audio delay to get audio and video in sync?
(assuming the video file is authored correctly)
  2. If yes,
    • how and where do you configure the audio delay in that case?
    • do you need different delay values for different videos in that case?
(again, assuming all video files are correct)

Thanks

For anyone following this thread who would like to encourage the Emby devs to add adjustable audio delay to other Emby clients/apps, please go to this new thread and chime in.

If you're interested in any improvement, you'll need to help us understand the problem. If we don't understand the core of things, then there's no chance for a feature request to become ever considered for implementation.

Buuuut as I said before I don't use Windows, I use Android devices. Care to read the very few last posts?

I did. That's because I asked whether you would be able to and you responded "Able? Sure. Willing? No".
