In this file Emby selects ID 5 (plain text subtitles) as the default subtitle. Why don't it select ID 4 (in PGS format)? Edited February 3, 2022 by Juan Simón
Juan Simón 12 Posted February 3, 2022 Author Posted February 3, 2022 And even worse, why doesn't the Emby server respect my subtitle selection for this file, in the file information window? I select: But if I exit this screen and enter again, the one determined by the server is selected again: This is clearly a server error.

You haven't, you only said: 17 minutes ago, Juan Simón said: I have set Spanish language and in subtitles "Smart". which might as well have been Subtitle language. With Spanish as Preferred audio language, subtitle "Smart" mode should actually preselect subtitles to OFF for this file, as audio IS in your preferred language hence no subs needed, you likely already played that item at some point causing selection to stick. 14 minutes ago, Juan Simón said:

As for this, an item has to be played even for a few seconds for manual selection to stick, changing it only in Detail screen won't do.
Juan Simón 12 Posted February 3, 2022 Author Posted February 3, 2022 No, I think this is a server and client bug. I didn't play the movie never. In this case your assumption is incorrect. It must select the forced ones in my language (Spanish) but in this case there are 2: some in SRT format and other in PGS format. Emby selects the SRT and there is no way to change it in the movie tab. I have also tried it with other movies and series episodes with the same result. Plex, for example, remembers the subtitles marked in the movie or episode tab, regardless of what I have selected in the subtitle options (these options should only be used by default for a new movie or episode).

Juan Simón 12 Posted February 3, 2022 Author Posted February 3, 2022 (edited) It seems to me that you are understanding what you want. If there are 2 identical forced subtitles with the only difference being the format, Why does Emby select SRT instead of PGS? Why, in order for Emby to respect my subtitle/audio selection, do I have to play the movie? What is the use then of the audio and subtitle dropdown in the movie/episode tab? The selection is based not on format but on the emby user subtitle language options. The use of the drop-down is to be able to select audio and subtitles prior to playback

The first subtitle is the same language than the second. But Emby selects the second. This system only works for movies. In the case of series you have to select it for each episode just before watching it, which means that you can't watch them all in a row.
Luke 39622 Posted February 3, 2022 Posted February 3, 2022 If all factors are equal then the text subtitles will be picked over pgs because they are more efficient and don't require server transcoding.

It looks like it may not currently, but we should probably adjust that. 1
