10-bit H.265 HEVC Hardware Acceleration is Broken on 4.3.0.30

HEVC 10bit H.265

Best Answer seanbuff , 06 January 2020 - 01:10 AM

Just thought I'd report that I have done some testing on the latest Windows build (4.4.0.5) and this appears to be working correctly now on HEVC content, especially 10-bit.

All transcoding is being performed by the GPU as expected.

Thanks @softworkz

@Brudertac - Once again, thanks a lot for the logs.

Now we have ruled out any possible (significant) differences of the command line, so this must be due to the different ffmpeg version.

The current situation is as follows: We already got an updated ffmpeg version in the pipeline. It will first debut in the Windows releases of the upcoming beta (4.4.0.5).

As long as there won't be any showstoppers, that new ffmpeg will be included in the Linux beta packages of the subsequent beta release.

Please retry as soon as it's released and let us known about the results then.

Thanks for your patience,

softworkz

@seanbuff - as good as it sounds, and as ludicrous it may be to tell a satisfied customer that his satisfaction might be erroneous - I'm afraid, I still have to.

The reason is, that we haven't implemented hw color mapping/conversion for QuickSync yet.

There's one thing that might be happening in your case:

Our latest ffmpeg allows separate hw contexts for QuickSync encoder and decoder. So you might see QuickSync decoding _and_ QuickSync encoding - but what's happening in-between is done in software. So, the 10bit color conversion is probably done in software  while decoding and encoding is done in hardware.

If I could see a log file, I could confirm..

Good news there's movement on this.... how can get involved in the Beta for Synology (I posted a request in the Beta forum months ago but have heard nothing). Keen to get this working like it used to, my Emby has been unusable outside my LAN for quite some time now.

Thanks for the logs - these confirm what I mentioned above.

There's still a way to go, but that's still a nice little improvement.

Thanks for reporting!

@processcreative - This is off topic. Please post your question in a separate thread.

Thanks!

Is it possible to get the latest beta for Synology? Or is the release of the next stable version so close that it's worth waiting?

10-bit transcoding with VAAPI started working for me again with 4.4.0.13. Some issues with quality selection (with 4k videos, selecting 1080p-60mbps automatically chooses 4k-40mbps instead. Also, changing the quality usually results in infinite buffering) and the bitrate/fps statistics aren't very accurate, but other than that, works good

Hi there,

Any update on the release of 4.4? This is a show stopper for me, I originally switched from Plex to Emby because i found Emby more stable, but with it eating CPU on my Synology 918+ comparitively to Plex I may have to switch back again :(

Thank you, I appreciate there are many different moving parts when compiling for several platforms. Are you able to provide a rough eta please, or even a binary that i can help test with?

Im having the same HVAC problem and Im waiting on the same answer. I purchased 700€ NAS Synology 1019+ and I cant watch 4K videos.... really stupid

But with our lead DEV from Asia our software where I use to work was also having same problems, they would use "older" builds for different upgrades, so they added new feature, but many times they broke something what was working before without problems
