Android TV unnecessary transcoding through direct play error (BETA)

Synology AndroidTV

I ripped the VOBSUB subtitles in the file and it seems that those are responsible for the transcode.

We plan to support direct play of these subtitles in a future release. Thanks.

Hi there,

I actually run the EMBY Beta Version 3.6.0.79 on my synology DS916+. Very often i run in a very curious issue. The server transcodes without any need if I start watching on my nvidia shield (EMBY app 1.6.56g) In my opinion I think that this effect happens more often if I changing the audio, e.g. german to english, or changing subtitles. In this case the sub are integrated pgs subs and should be played directly. When I open nerd stats I can see that the transcode is running with the message: "error by direct playing attempt.

When I check on the server dashbord, I got the info that the transcode was triggered by a issue with the media bit rate. I can't understand this, cause every setting for local network are on max and all is hardwired 1GBit LAN.

For a more easier inquiry I add three logs. The first starting playback, the second by changing audio and the third one by changing subtitles.

P.S. May I suggest to add a option to preselect audio and subtitle before starting the stream.

Thx.

Mike

Hi, in all of these examples, the app tried to direct play, and then automatically switched to transcoding when the app's video player reported an error with the file.

If you submit an in-app log, then @ebr can provide more info on why that might have happened. Thanks.

Hi.  The beta version of the app has this now.

Hi Luke,

I deleted the server logs and tried to fetch the logs from my nvidia shield. Unfortunately I wasn't able to connect to my shield from my mac. So sorry, I couldn't provide the logs here.

Hi.  The beta version of the app has this now.

I installed the beta (1.6.60g) on my Shield and i can't find an option for preselecting the subtitle nor the audiostream.

However, I think I could detect the origin of the transcoding trigger. I ripped the VOBSUB subtitles in the file and it seems that those are responsible for the transcode. I'm a little curious about it because with other apps I never had a problem with those on the shield.

I searched at pre play screen of the movie for the option. In my opinion the only position where it makes senses. Maybe I am to stupid to find it.

Hi.  Did you look in the settings for the app?  Unless you have multiple versions of an item, these are not shown by default (but you can enable them in settings).

Thanks...

I tried it out today and i ran directly in an issue.

I preselected Japanese as audio stream and english as sub. As soon as I started the series the app made a fallback to the standard settings.
