Theme: blue neon night

For all Roku and nowTV users, even roku4, rokuTV, express, premier, premier+, and ultra. This is a full theme for emby. This creates a very dark background, like space, where everything seems to float. This is by default, a neon blue/green theme. You have 4 colors to change to your liking. It's wonderfully colorful (when you want it to be, emby standard theme can be used too) and kid friendly.

The homescreen view toggles also work differently now. The highlighted item will always be the center item. When you press ok on the roku remote, the list slides up. The highlight position is always centered. The highlight position never changes. This was my biggest complaint about using toggles, this is now solved. Ive also borrowed toggle icons for this, mostly from android's google hangouts emoticon keyboard tray.






This is just an example of some screens and how they look. I could've shown more but you can see them yourself. You cannot change certain types of things about the roku interface. This is because emby uses stock roku screens. Try this out and let me know of any issues. As emby updates each time on roku, I will keep this theme in sync.

This will be the last update I will be able to publish on the roku store for this app, unfortunately.
 
But I can continue to offer zips for people to sideload onto their roku devices. So the store version cannot be updated after today, but the zip version can until 2019. So all is not lost, it just requires manual updates after today.

OPTIONS EXPLAINED:

h264/MPEG4 in 4k: this will make resolutions up to 3840x2160 auto-detect as directly playable in h264/MPEG4 rather than transcoding. Those with roku4 should try enabling this feature.

Max Framerate: this will let you raise the limit for direct play. Choose from 30, 31, 60, or 61. The 31 and 61 are for when the framerate ratio isnt fully aligned. If you are unsure what to set this at, for best results change it to 61 until you experience a problem. If you experience problems the recommendation is to keep this at 30.

Convert DTS to AC3: this will help older roku models with systems that do not support DTS. The firmware versions in the older hardware is to blame. Newer rokus it should say you dont need to care about this setting.

Convert MPEG4 to h264: this is a personal preference and disabling this may lead to poor video quality. This will certainly ease the cpu duties though but at the risk of blocky video. This is useful for xvid/divx avi files and will pass the native mpeg4 stream.

Convert MP2/MP3 to AAC: this is once again a personal preference. This is again for those with xvid/divx avi files which use mp2/mp3 audio. In this case disable this option and save your cpu a few cycles. This will allow native mp2/mp3 audio to stream rather than converting to aac.

Unknown Audio: this is mostly for livetv streams. This will suggest the codec to be assumed when watching livetv. Changing this to ac3 will certainly help transcoding keep surround sound.

Default Audio: this is the codec we start with. If no other codec appears useful this is our fallback codec. You can choose ac3 to keep surround in everything.

Convert AAC to MP3: this one is for warbly sound and poor audio. If you experience issues with stereo aac enable this option to use mp3 instead.

Force surround: this one completes the surround audio. If this option is enabled when transcoding all aac will become ac3. This is a companion setting to the aac to mp3 option and will override what is used there.

..Or, do you mean you loaded this onto your Roku/nowTV and pictures/images aren't showing? Your movie/tvshow icons that start those rows will certainly differ, as these are curated by the server, not the Roku.

How do you have it showing the runtime of your movies/episodes, as well as the playcount?

 

I don't know if it is something with your theme or a setting I'm missing somewhere in my Roku3/Emby server, but that's something I would really like to know.  Thanks.

I added those as part of the theme. I actually find it useful to know. They cant be disabled at the moment, so you are limited to 1 line titles. The 2nd line will always be other info. I also added some other things to prevent hanging the roku. Its the same as in this thread ( http://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/21579-Enhanced-roku-descriptions-hack ) with the added "blue neon theme" on top. It is based on the present github version of the official app which is the latest ( v2.10 ) as of this post.

I agree.  It is nice to see at a glance ... installed.

 

I know it isn't necessarily a problem of this, but I've found my play counts are wildly off for some episodes ... example, I have watched all episodes of Bob's Burgers multiple times ... yet some of them show that they have been played 0 times, last played never (and some are in the double digits, which is correct).  I'm mostly interested in the quickview play time, but, seeing how many times things have been played is nice, too.  Bonus item: would you be able to do that for movies as well?  Again, not that important, just curious.

The playcounts for items not being correct can happen when you manually mark an item played. It will have a watched 1x, but no last played on date will appear with it. They can also be wrong, when you resume. You watched the entire video once, but resumed 5 times. This results in a watched 6x playcount. This is how the server works.

 

The playcounts on items should never revert back to 0, unless you manually mark them unwatched. This means either you watched those under another user perhaps and not under the present user? It could also happen if you rename episodes and emby corrects metadata accordingly. It becomes a new unwatched episode in that case. You will have to watch this one. If it occurs again, we may need to come back, circle the wagons and figure out where this is happening. It would either be another emby client causing it, or the server.

 

As far as the movie idea, yes, having the playcount and last played would be nice. The problem is there is no left over wasted space to fit this in. There was space in the tvshow episode details screen because the entire line only showed season/episode numbers, it was here I added the playcount/lastwatched. With movies the only place to add this information would be injected into the movie description. This would then, limit the length of descriptions to fit the playcount/lastplayed in. This isnt feasible as sometimes the as-full-as-possible description is more valuable to see there. It is a trade off. This is why I never added it, as I had the same idea. But, It you want this feature added as the first line of movie descriptions I can make it do this.

In the meantime, I do see where I can add watched count to thumb images. Poster doesnt give you any areas to show text. Here is how the homescreen looks.

 

 

This is how it can look, but you have to enable thumbs. The default view for non homescreen view is normally poster. It is kind of hidden how to accomplish this. First go to your movies section, and enter into it. Then press the * button. It will bring up this menu, follow the choices I make.

 

Now you should see the watched counts as a quickview. I havent gotten last played yet. Im trying to find alternatives to splicing it into the description. I also updated the icons to have less noise in them, ie clearer. I also darkened the login screen now.

 

 

If you downloaded from the roku store, it should update automatically, or you can manually. This app will share the homescreen with the official app, it doesnt replace it.

 

For nowtv users who sideload, you have to choose which you have on your device, so updated the link to the new version for nowtv users so they get the same experience.

Works for me, looks sexy, too.  Also, the watched/mark as unwatched must be it ... sometimes i don't want an episode i have watched but stopped in another viewing to keep showing up in the "resume" menu, so the only way I know (besides watching it) to remove it is to mark as unwatched/mark as rewatched again.  So it makes sense that some that I've watched a bunch only show a low count since it resets the count altogether.

Added the last two commits luke made, 2.11 and 2.12 versions. Now caught up to version 2.12.

 

If you enable the server to generate metadata for missing and upcoming episodes it will create virtual episodes. Seasons where every episode is virtual will show up occasionally. You cant play a single episode in these entirely virtual seasons, they are information only, sort of a reference. But they get in the way if you only have a few seasons of some series and just want to watch. So...to alleviate that issue, I added two options to preferences. This will help in making it easier to navigate to playable seasons.

 

Added ability to remove detailed description line to allow full titles to show as much as possible. This is in the preferences screen shown above. It can also be found in the options menu when you press * and choose "change view styles". Having both ways the option is easier to access quickly.

 

The roku store will auto update, for nowtv users reget the zip in the first post.

@@moviemadnessman Here it is with the added "detail statistics" line in the description of the details screen. This is kinda how rarflix handles this, so why not borrow the idea.

 

It is controlled either by the homescreen preference section, or via the option menu * pop-up dialogs when choosing "change view styles"

 

 

Its faster to know which will transcode or not seeing the container and codecs as part of the statistics.

Customized with a girly valentines day type theme ( hot pink/deep pink/crimson/purple ) would work better maybe?

 

You decide. There are now 4 colors adjustable in preferences. You can tailor this to your hearts content. Adjust everyday, or at special times of year, halloween theme ( orange/purple/carrot/crimson )? These 4 color changes only affect things when using the "blue neon night" theme. The "emby standard" theme will remain, unaffected, nothing happens. I've narrowed the possible color choices to just a few dozen, simplicty. But, if you have a bunch of color/#XXXXXX you want added as choices in the color list, this is easily possible. Experiment with this. Love it, Hate it? Indeed. I am not responsible for bad color choices. The above was just examples. [emoji14]

 

This will auto-update on roku's using the private link in the first post of this thread. For all those who sideload using roku/nowtv grab the zip in the same spot.

 

This includes the embedded srt fixes @@Luke submitted to github presently version 2.16.

 

Note: Previous version 2.15 with 4 color change was needlessly resetting to homescreen (like a full theme change does) after every color change. This isnt required anymore. You can change colors (they take effect immediately) and stay within the color change preference screen.

Coming back to this late... but there is a better way. To remove an item from "resume" , click the item you want removed and go into its "details", then choose "more...". Click on "Mark played" instead. This will increase the viewcount by 1, reset the resume point, and keeps your watched counts from resetting. This is how it works in both the standard app, and this app.

 

Also, added back the "glowing" border selector as default. The standard theme had this disabled for some reason (@Luke do you know why?). So made a new preference option (theme border) to select from glowing or the standard. Affects both blue neon and standard themes.

I'm new to Emby and to the forum but you da man speechles! This looks so much better than the default, and I realize there's only so much you can do to what's there. If I had my druthers you could choose what the folders look like as well as having multiple rows for a library (grid?), it seems the only way is endlessly scrolling sideways the way it is unless I'm missing a setting. I only use nonenhanced view. My gosh those alphabet letters are comically huge in enhanced view

@@scoson The letters are large on purpose to fill up the given image space as much as possible. When seen as thumbs it can show the letters full size in landscape view. When in poster view these are scaled since its a portrait view. The homescreen uses the full size thumb view. You can change what the folders look like easily too. It respects whatever images you have your folders set to. Use the emby metadata editor of the web-client to change these. It isnt your lack of hunting thru options, there is no gridscreen option. The mediacentre app has one. There are working examples of gridscreen on github. But @@im85288 might be willing to share his gridscreen from mediacentre with us? Having it in the official client as a series of pull requests, would be most awesome. If not, I can work on hacking something up to support it myself. Doesn't hurt to ask. Haw..

 

Ive made a new version too, changes are below:

* Correct "last on" to use the local time of the device rather than display as GMT (GMTtoLocal)

* Add day of week the show airs to the tv episode detail page (ReleaseDateToDayOfWeek)

* "resume from xx:xx" added to resume line (ResumeFrom)

@@speechles - sure I have no problem sharing the grid view with you. It is quite custom though to mediacentre but I am sure it can be worked into this client. I have no intention of doing the pull requests etc though as to be honest I haven't looked at the code in about 6 months! Anyway pm me and we can take things from there.

New version, changes below:
* expand bitrates to maximum 50 Mbps (roku4 uhd)
* direct play hevc at up to 60 fps at max size 3840x2160 (roku4 only)
* direct play vp9 at up to 30 fps at max size 3840x2160 (roku4 only)
* preferences menu shows model as name
* display upcoming/missing on virtual episodes

This app is for all rokus and nowtvs. Links are in the first post of this thread. Everyone with a roku4 (the app knows if you are) can run this and test out hevc/vp9 direct play. No transcoding! Even 10bit hevc should direct play. Any issues please mention in this thread. Both the roku store link and zip have been updated. I lack a roku4, and an appropriate 4k UHD TV so need testers please.

Also, those with roku4, try out the hd audio test setting in preferences and see if you can get 7.1 audio to pass-through. Eventually this is rumored to be supported. Every time roku has a system update you can enable this and check. Then disable if it still isnt.

Just got my Roku 4 today.Quickly hooked it up tonight and having trouble with theme blue neon. The first time I fired it up, I was able to go to preferences. Changed it to the 40Mbps and changed remember user to "No". It then kicked be out to the Roku home screen. Now it seems to kick me back out to the Roku home screen after a few seconds every time. The normal Emby app seemed to be OK. I'll do some more testing with it after the OSU game.

After you change the remember user to "no" this wont have an affect until the current user logs out. If you leave the app and come back it will still be that user. If you choose "sign out" it will move you back to the "choose user" screen. At this point quit the app. Now whenever started it will ask for a user. You dont have to sign out, everytime you log in. Just that once after you change the setting. This is how it works in the normal app and this app.

 

As far as it randomly exiting, this might be caused by the server scanning media. When the server is scanning, the server may not reply fast enough. The app will receive a timeout. The app requires metadata from the server to complete its task to finish loading the "detail screen". The normal app crashes into the brightscript debugger when this occurs, you get stuck at retrieving, and the app stops responding. You can only press the home button to get out, which takes you back to the roku homescreen. When this occurs in the blue neon app I have it crash back to the roku homescreen directly. This might be what you are witnessing, maybe..? Other times, you just see the 4 options at the bottom: search, preferences, change server and sign out. Nothing else, no movies, no tv, etc shows up after logging in. This is also caused by the server scanning and what percentage you are and such. It is predictable and reproduceable behavior. So this isnt a bug in the app, hopefully.

 

It works best and most responsive when there are no tasks running in server dashboards "scheduled tasks" page

 

But yes, report back on h265/hevc/vp9 direct playback. This would be the main benefit of the roku4 at the moment besides it just being faster.

I did a little more testing. It would bring up the "choose user" screen every time but when I selected my user, it would enter the app and crash if I scrolled down. I tried logging in with the kids users and everything was working fine. Logged back into my user and crashed again. I turned off the channels on my account. The trailers plugin is the only channel I had. Now I can log in with my user and everything is working. Turned the trailers plugin back on and it crashes again. So there must be something going on with that. I'll just leave the trailers plugin turned off for now since I don't really use it anyway.

 

Besides the speed increase, I got the Roku4 for the netflix and amazon 4k content. Not really crazy about the built-in apps on the TV. Plus I wanted to put the Roku3 in the kids room. I'll try to get some h265 content and test it tomorrow.

 

Thanks for the great work on this. The theme looks great and will work well until we get the scene graph app. I'm a Java developer by day and wish I had more time to dive into brightscript.

New version, changes below:

* When transcoding use 5.1 AC3 when 5.1 DTS/AC3 track is chosen, for everything else use 2.0 AAC

* MKV container with MPEG4 video stream will transcode XVID/DIVX CodecTag

* Any container with MPEG4 video stream will transcode DX50 CodecTag

* Make the missing/upcoming auto-detect as accurate as possible

 

This makes automatic detection of the direct-play/transcoding engine almost perfect. There is really no need for options regarding directplay, directstream(remux), or transcoding. That is, if you do things right. In a perfect world, the software should intelligently decide what is best, and now it is much closer to that goal. Thanks to everyone who reports issues with playback and follows through with logs and other added information requests.

 

Roku users, if you have the app already, you need just do a system update to make sure it's the latest. Everyone else, links in first post of the thread.

 

@@EduardoSantos This should correct the problem you had with "mkv with mpeg4 in divx/xvid = no video" verus "avi with mpeg4 in divx/xvid = video". Yes, it has everything to do with the container as you suspected. Nice work gumshoe. *wink* (nod to carmen sandiego). If you could check the problem videos again with the updated app you can confirm this as solved. Thanks.

One of my televisions with surround sound only supports dolby. Any DTS tracks played have no audio. This is no good. The software should automatically detect this. Now it can with firmware above 6.1.

 

 

This is the text for this option when using a firmware under 6.1, see below.

The above is only shown on legacy devices still on a firmware version under 6.1. They will see that message above indicating they need to let the system know.

 

On firmware 6.1 and higher you will see this message instead. Indicating it can auto-detect DTS or AC3 to prefer. You can always make it convert if you wanted to, the option is there.

 

New version:

* DTS to AC3 option in preferences

* Give firmware 6.1+ full auto-detection of DTS/AC3

* Add direct play support for Dobly Digital+ (AC3 7.1)

* TrueHD to AC3 if surround sound detected (DD 5.1/DD+ 7.1)

* When transcoding MPEG4 stream use MPEG4->MPEG4 rather than MPEG4->H264

* When transcoding MP2/3 stream use MP2/3->MP2/3 rather than MP2/3->AAC

* Options to control MPEG4 and MP2/3 transcoding

* Transcode MKV with MPEG4 and codecTag of MP4V same as XVID/DIVX

* roku4 direct-play for apple lossless audio codec (ALAC)

* Direct play/stream support for LPCM audio

 

 

This is merely a container swap for AVI with MPEG4(divx/xvid) and AC3 or MP3. Barely impacts the cpu at all. Sweet.

 

 

Tested a ton of videos. What works, what can transcode, what cant. All sorts of time wasted all in an effort to make this comprehensive and allow the best detection possible to minimize cpu usage. There are now options for MPEG4 and MP2/3 that can be set to NO which will allow those codecs to direct stream in your videos. If you love your cpu, look at these options and enable them to try out. If you have any issues with videos (you may as people encode videos in odd ways at times) please report them. This is why these settings now exist is to help solve issues. To give you more power and control to energize your media. This is emby after all. Haw.

 

You are in effect beta testers. Thanks for your help making this software better. Lets go team roku! Winning!

 

For the most part, setting the MPEG4 option to NO and playing direct-stream usually looks the same as converting to H264. It uses less CPU for sure. The MP2/3 option saves a little CPU copying MP2/3 audio. AVI containers with MPEG4 video and MP3 audio will benefit from this the most.

 

Still need testers with a roku4 to check direct-play of h265 hevc up to 60fps and vp9 up to 30fps with 1080p, 4k, and other various resolutions. Hevc can be 8 or 10 bit. Vp9 is 8 bit. Thanks again.

 

Update your roku, or get from the links in the first post of this thread to sideload nowtv/roku. May the force be with you. Always.
