Album Artist Images

I recently move my music library to a new location, so had to rescan again.

I noticed that a lot of artists are missing images EVEN THOUGH there is a folder.png in every artists folder

image.thumb.png.84b49581cea0f238537b3d15d42e2562.png

as can bee seen here with the Altered Images example.

And as shown in the library view.

image.thumb.png.48784357eca561e495fb4b1cb6ea1bc5.png

No amount of "Scan Library" will grab the images, and nor will a "refresh metadata" from the music library root. If I select an artist and refresh metadata on the artist alone, it will often grab the provided image.

What is odd, if I "edit images" and manually add the image I already have, it does not update the image in the artists directory, it instead adds it to AppData\Roaming\Emby-Server\programdata\metadata\musicartists

image.thumb.png.4786f974d9c78217db0641bbdfc648e6.png

Why would it do this when I have the options of the library to store all with media?

image.thumb.png.c9517d2648ece2a72518c29bf5df49cb.png
I can understand it doing so if the artist is not present or there is no provided media.

Anyway, how can I get all the artwork that was correctly added before back without manually doing every artist?

And to confuse me even more, I have all media downloading OFF as I have my own.

I find trying to focus on that Amy Winehouse logo is driving me crazy as well 😀

Can you please show us all of the music library options?

You ask this so often that perhaps an "export as text" option would be helpful for libraries? I know there is the xml version (so have also attached as not all is exposed in the library settings).

Hopefully that's enough data to get to the bottom of this?

Before you ask, my music library is "perfectly" organised (as can be seen in the previous post) and ALL tracks are fully tagged also with mb tags etc. Though, that would not explain why the supplied "folder.jpg" in the artist root is ignored and another image is grabbed even if image grabbers are disabled.

For example, that Amy Winehouse image that Emby decided to use upon a metadata refresh is not in my collection.

So,

A library Scan is not picking up the provided media within the artists folder

A "refresh metadata" is grabbing a new image and placing it in AppData.... etc rather than using the provided images. The image I used for example (Amy) was grabbed from "Discogs" (as shown here), removing the plugin results with the image being grabbed from "Fanart", even though image downloaders are DISABLED?

In all cases, all artwork for artists regardless of them being provided as per the folder and media naming conventions, is being grabbed and placed in AppData's metadata/musicartist folder.

Expected behavior is to use the provided images, and if they are not present, to do nothing. I have image grabbers disabled and can manually edit images if this case arised (it never has as I have artwork for ALL).

So, something is very amiss.

Hopefully this is something silly (mangled xml?) and an easy fix. I am not fixing me music collection atm as I want to keep it as is in the hope of Emby doing what i expect it to do.

EDIT: Just to note, album cover artwork is fine. Emby is using them correctly and not attempting to download afresh.

ok, here's log files doing a metadate refresh on 2 artists. What is odd is that I noticed in the B-52's one, it states "2023-07-03 09:00:46.460 Debug Skia: Returning original image P:\Music\The 411\folder.jpg" for some reason, and it never fixed the b-52's image (even though present in artist folder)

anyway...

@LukeWere these of any use??

I only ask as it's still the same and I really don't want to manually go through them all when the images are there already that Emby SHOULD be using.

@LukeSix days ago you asked my to post logs, and I have.

If there any chance you can look at these so I can sort my album collection? Or do you want more from me, like blood?

Perhaps also move this the the testing area? I am using the latest beta and it may be related.

@LukeIt's been a long time (2 weeks) since you asked for the logs and still they sit there, is there any eta of when this annoying issue will be even looked at, let alone fixed?

At the moment, I dare not fiddle with the music library and fix  the artist images in case you need anything to be tested, but... I really want to get the library sorted.

i believe this issue has been around since the day emby introduced proper support for music. it was well discussed for a while but people got bored of the inaction and stopped complaining eventually.

if i recall it happens when lets say you have 2 artists in your library, A and B.

Emby scans artist A and finds your metadata on disk. But artist B is also a guest artist on one of artist A's album. As emby scans artist A and finds the album that features artist B, it finds no metadata for B and looks it up online. that artist metadata gets added to emby's central metadata folder as clearly it can't go in the folder with artist A's stuff. it then moved onto scanning artist B and emby finds it already has artist B in the db. the metadata in the central metadata folder is used and anything you had in artist B's folder is ignored. nothing will change this.

sound familiar?

no, it's not related to that.

what it is doing is not finding the artist image as supplied and documented in the info. folder/poser.ext in the artist directory. Instead, it searches for the artist image and downloads it (even though image downloading is off) and then places that in (even though storing is set to with the files) the appdata directory.

This is the opposite of what is expected on all counts.

Now, it may just be me, but.... I doubt it. What's more likely is that others have not noticed. If they looked in their appdata emby dir, they would see a musicartists folder containing replicas of the images (or worse ones from discogs etc0 they already have in their own music directory structure.

The good news in these examples is that there were no attempts to use the internet for images, so I think your library settings are being honored as they should be.

Yes, but the other only contains a small amount of artists that MusicBrainz does not contain.

Can you use the image editor to manually select new images for both avril and b-52s, then attach the server log? (again with debug logging enabled). thanks.

and the bad news?

The image that I showed for Amy Winehouse was not in my metadata folder, and nor is it in the artists folder in music, that contains a far better image. But... this still (regardless of where Emby picked the image up from) begs the question, why is it not using the images i have provided. I would of course be much happier if it did :)

I keep a well maintained music library, so Emby should have no issues. All media is provided, and all is named correctly, and yet - they are ignored sadly.

When you say "the good news is...", is this an indication that you acknowledge there is an issue that needs fixing, hopefully.

well, i have done this, and post above. it takes the images, and rather than placing anything in the Artists folder (in my music library ie. "/Music/The B52's/") it places them in Artists within Appdata/......../metadata/musicartists instead, the fact that artist images are in my music library is ignored when both scanning and when manually adding. Album images are used correctly within /atist/album/folder.ext.

Also, as you can see, my library settings implicitly ask to use data within the library, and not appdata. It appears that this works for everything, EXCEPT artist images.

I keep a well maintained music library, so Emby should have no issues. All media is provided, and all is named correctly, and yet - they are ignored sadly.

When you say "the good news is...", is this an indication that you acknowledge there is an issue that needs fixing, hopefully.

The bad news is that we don't know yet why it's not going to the artist folder.

well, i have done this, and post above. it takes the images, and rather than placing anything in the Artists folder (in my music library ie.

Can you do it again? You did just do it recently but that was for a metadata refresh, and since you had internet images disabled, nothing new was obtained. So I really need to see the process of obtaining a new image. The easiest way to do that is with the manual image editor.

Just thinking out loud, does 1 of your songs have the image embedet in its mp3tag.

Even though it looks like you disabled embedet  images.

of course i can, if it helps to fix this, i am happy to try anything.

I will do so when none of the family is watching so I can make sure it's a clean log.
