Save Time With Emby's Intro Skip

Requires: Emby Server 4.7 or later

One of the new features in Emby Server 4.7 is the ability to skip TV Show Episode Introductions segments. This allows you to jump right to the start of the action saving you a great deal of time allowing you to quickly get to the good stuff! Combine Into Skip with Automatic Play Next Episode for a superior binge-watching experience!.

This guide will cover the following:

  1. Configure a TV Library in Emby Server
  2. Configure Emby Client for Automatic or Manual Intro Skip
  3. How to use
Configure a TV Library in Emby Server

In order to use Intro Skip a TV Show library needs to be configured. Edit a TV Library on the Emby Server console.  Scroll down to the Markers section in the library and change the option from Never to either "as a scheduled task" or "as a scheduled task and when media is added" depending on your particular needs.

Once configured, optionally go to Scheduled Tasks Menu and you'll see a new Task "Detect Episode Intros" added in the Library section.

By default this task is set to run every 24 hours.

You can optionally adjust this task to run at a specific time. To add a new Task click the + sign above.
image.png.e27f4e5d6ad9e9c60ea5edbaa3a95156.png

This shows a new schedule that starts at 3 AM and runs for up to 4 hours.

We can now click the trashcan icon to remove the 24 hours schedule:

Run Detect Episode Intros Manually

The Detect Episode Intros can easily be ran manually at any time by clicking the the arrow key.  The task will change to a progress bar like this:

Nothing more need be done on the Emby Server.

Note: The server will process all TV Show episodes in the background.
This process may take a while depending on the number of episodes you have..

Configure Emby Client for Automatic or Manual Intro Skip

Each client can be set to ignore TV Show Intros, automatically use Intros, or to prompt use showing a button.  You can set this option in the client option's Playback Menu.

Using Intro Skip
With the Skip Intro button selected you can clearly see the button on the OSD immediately at the start of playback. The timeline is still at 0:00 before the show has started to play and we can already skip the introduction of the show.

image.png.560c568970db12909dfc4ac012ba3deb.png

Clicking the Skip Intro button immediately jumps right to the start of the Episode.
image.png.c247665d5022607173b79fb843f89cd5.png

With the client option set to Automatically skip intros our TV show intros have been put on auto pilot.

Right at the start of playback it jumps to the end of the intro right at the point of the fade in.

Hi, it can work with any kind of TV series.

It works for probably 95% of all my TV Shows.  The type of show it's not going to be ideal for is the type that starts out playing the show for 1.5 to 3 minutes, then does the intro.

In a nutshell, Emby analyzes each episode of a show. It then compares the show episodes together looking for a common Introduction sequence.  If it finds this sequence it can jump to the end of it for you, aka Intro Skip.

@Gravis Did you Refresh Metadata on a Series or entire library?  But a forum topic with a specific example and client would be more appropriate place for discussion.

Sorry about posting here, wasn't sure how the forum was setup. I have made a post in the appropriate place. Thank you.

Just curious if this function could also be applied in the future to movies with post credit scenes?

Hi, it's certainly possible for future updates. Thanks.

I just wanted to say that so far this feature is proving very reliable and a great addition. I love how my Emby server stacks up to, and in my opinion exceeds, Netflix more and more each day!

The scheduled tasks took well over a day to complete on my computer though.. Oops!

Keep up the good work team.

Don't feel bad, it can take a while depending on count of episodes and hardware doing the work.  For example My Synology 920+ NAS took close to two weeks processing TV shows 24x7 that was stored on the NAS which was about 80% of my shows. The same job on one of my fast ZFS servers processed the complete library in less than 8 hours thanks to it's crazy fast storage.

One day doesn't sound too bad especially if you have a lot of full seasons and lots of shows. :)

This was my favorite feature of Emby and worked perfectly as a plugin but after it was built into Emby it stopped working and now im reading that its only a premier feature after I used it for over a month before. To be honest it almost made me look at other programs

Hi, it always required Premiere even with the plugin. Once you click the Skip Intro button in the video player, it will mention it. Maybe you're referring to the automatic skip that the plugin created via the Emby API, which as far as I know you can still use if you want.

Is this not implemented on Mac server yet?

Im running 4.7.1.0 and I dont see any entry for intro markers.

Never mind. I inadvertently dowloaded the High Sierra version of the sever. Got 4.7.5 and am running the task now.

Thanks!

How do I find when a episode has the intro skip already defined? Without playing it and looking for the button obviously...

Refreshed a series and didn't see any changes

It's not marked anywhere as it's just built in and used when available.  This is probably something you'll only want to do during initial load.  What I'd suggest is looking through the server log or look at the file system itself if you selected the option to save with media.

That's really the only easy way to know.

Welp. Nothing is showing in the logs (just an entry that I started the task), when I started the scheduled task it finished in like 5 seconds. Tried refreshing metadata for a series and played an episode after a while, and no skip intro button. The skip intro setting is applied to the library as "Scheduled task and when media is added"

No idea how I can check if it's doing what is supposed to do, but thanks

OK that sounds like it's going to run only during the nightly process so it doesn't interfere with daily operations.

Nah. I don't this is working at all. Weird, because I can't find anything on the logs.

Even with new added media.

Hi there, please create a topic in the General section of the community, making sure to provide an example and the emby server log file. Thanks.
