Video recorded by iphone play with bad rotation on Samsung App

Hello,

I know this topic must have been discussed thousands of time, but I cannot find a solution to fix it.

I have some old video (mov format) created with an old iphone. video is in portrait format.

In Emby web app, video is perfect. In VLC also. But on my Samsung app on my tizen smart TV, the video is rotated by 90°. So it fit very well my 16:9 TV, but it's difficult to watch without a stiff neck.

I'm pretty sure there is something to modify with the video metadata, but can't find why ?

And it's ok on emby webapp, so it's only a tizen problem, or is it a video problem ?

Thanks.

Hi there, can you provide a sample video for testing? Thanks.

Sorry, haven't seen you replied to my topic yesterday...Don't receive notification. 🙄

Please find attached the video file itself, and screenshot of VLC playing file (OK), screenshot of emby webapp playing file (OK) , and screenshot of my samsung playing file (KO - note that the thumbnail has the correct orientation on the TV).

On my Samsung TV the orientation is correct, but the aspect ratio needs some adjustment related to the rotation.  What model is your TV?

@Luke, part of this issue is the same problem of needing to pull in the rotation info so that we can manually rotate the aspect ratio

hello,

any idea ? I can batch change rotation metadata, but how to be sure about the "correct" value ?

Thanks

Hi, this is a limitation of the Samsung video player. We'll look into what workarounds might be possible. Thanks for the feedback.

I need to try and test this in to see if the older devices are not handling the rotation correctly.  It will take me a a week or two to get to it, but I will check and let you know what I find.

Any updated on this issue? I also am running across the same issue.

Lastest emby, server (qnap) and for Samsung TV ( i have 3 of which all do it, including this years 65" 900a model..)

Portrait videos or pictures, will thumbnail correctly in emby, but will landscape it once you open them.

Hi, we're still looking into it. Thanks.

I even tried turning the world on it's side for the shot, hence the volcano blew up 2 weeks ago... (not doing THAT again!)

I'm also having this issue.  @LukeCouldn't Emby transcode these problem videos to the Samsung client so they play correctly?

My info:

Model : UN65KS8000
SW Version: T-JZMAKUC-1250.2, BT-S
Sub-micom Version : T-JZMAKUS-1007
Emby for Samsung 1.0.94

Thumbnails display correctly however the video itself doesn't.

I am also seeing this problem on my Samsung TV it would be nice to be able to change the rotation

We've begun to work on resolving this and it is in fact already done for newer models, it's just that it will require a combination of both app and server updates before you see the impact.

Older models still need some additional work which we'll be getting to soon. Thanks.

Hi Luke,
Great to hear!

Which current version supports the newest Samsung TV ( qnap 4.6.7)

Thanks!

The first part of the changes targeting newer generation devices will be in the upcoming 4.7 release.

Just to update my findings.

When playing 1080p video be shot from my phone recorded in landscape or portrait it plays back in the correct rotation.

When playing 4k video shot from my phone recorded in landscape or portrait it plays back only in landscape mode. (Portrait videos are rotated)

Hope this helps.

Are you using the store or the USB/Beta install version?  What app version number do you have installed?
