External Player stopped working

@@Luke, can you add me to this PM thread, too? I am also having issues since the latest update, with no changes having been made on my end. I'm also getting a "stream.mp4" path passed to my external player which is causing issues. (MPC-HC can't find .srt files for subtitles with this type of path. Tested VLC too, same path, same result.)

If this is getting passed into the external player instead of the direct file path, then it means the machine running Emby Theater does not have direct access to the M: path

 

The machine running Emby Theater AND Emby Server is the same machine on which the E: path (in my case) resides. They are on different drives (Emby Theater and Emby Server on the C: drive, video files on the E: drive), all on one desktop computer. I can't imagine why all of a sudden Emby Theater would not have direct access to local files that it has had no problem with for years, with no changes except for an Emby Theater update.

 

And like others, I'm discovering that almost nothing is written to the log files, even with debugging on. Most recent is attached. Is this by design?

Hi.

I just restored version 3.0.9 from backup and PowerDVD starting working fine with Emby Theater.

Launched straight into the program when selected.

 

I am more then happy to run any config/diagnostic process if it helps. I am sure it will update to 3.0.10 at some point as I saw it requested the .zip file.

(I changed the autoupdate to false, but from I have read that doesn't stop the updates or it was a old thread)

Thinking about this a little bit more, the logs I looked at yesterday may point to something. In the stable server logs, playback was just cut off. But in the beta server logs, it said that 'stop' was pressed in mpv. Which it absolutely wasn't. So I'm wondering if something is occurring that server is misinterpreting, and ending playback.

 

Luke, you want me to post the logs excerpts showing what I'm talking about? I can do that later, when I get home.

Ok, I misremembered what the server logs reported. They appear to be the same. For consistency, I used the same video on each server. It played for a very short time, then it simply closed at the same point. For comparison, here's how mpv normally closes, when pressing stop.

Ok, I think I found the culprit. I had the log level set to vo=trace, and apparently when used with the emby server, mpv doesn't like that. My bad 

 

And yes, VLC worked just fine

I remember having issues with PDVD a while ago. There is more than one way to launch it. I don't have it anymore, and I don't remember the specific executables, but maybe explore that possibility?

But given that my setup is all on one PC (no actual "file sharing"), and has been working for a very long time until the latest Emby Theater update with no change on my end, and others seem to have similar issues that also started with the most recent Emby Theater update, it seems worth considering that something in Emby Theater changed that caused this.

At this point everybody should be using the correct network path in the server library, regardless of whether the videos are on the same machine as the player or not. The server needs to direct the player to the exact location of video, or it won't work.

@, Yes, I have the shared network path set for all of my libraries, such as:

 

Folder: E:\My Videos\TV

Shared network folder: \\LIVING-ROOM-PC\My Videos\TV

 

This has worked fine for a very long time. The path has not changed, is still correct, and works both locally and over my network just fine.

I've read though that PM thread, thanks. You said to "Take a look at the path that is displayed on the video detail screen in the web app. That is the path the ET machine needs to be able to reach." In my case this shows (for a random sample video):

And then you said "Try taking this path and entering it into windows explorer on the ET machine. Make sure it is accessible before trying to play in Emby."

 

So I did exactly that and as expected, the path works fine. It works fine on the PC where I use ET, and it works fine on other PCs on my home network as well.

 

The other user with the problem in that PM thread found that his network path was not set correctly. Mine is correct and functional.  

 

I also changed ET back to using its built-in player temporarily (a nightmare on my shitty old PC), and I can see in "stats for nerds" that it's also using that streaming URL instead of the direct path.

 

So why is ET all of a sudden passing a streaming URL like http://192.168.20.18:8096/emby/Videos/1489062/stream.mp4....instead of the direct path? This seems to suggest that it doesn't have direct access, or at least "thinks" it doesn't, when it does/should.

 

What else can I do to help troubleshoot why it would not have direct access when it should?

Well, I had an old version of PowerDVD sitting around, so I thought I'd take this for a spin. Aaaand, it didn't work. Just the same as these guys are saying, it launches but doesn't play anything. All the other players work, VLC, mpv etc. Now I remember why I got rid of PDVD... it sucks!

Nope, VLC fares the same as MPC-HC. (Both of them can play the streaming URL that Emby is passing them, but they can't find .srt subtitle files because since they don't have the direct path of the video, they don't know where they should be looking.)

I use PotPlayer as an external player for Emby Theater, and with version 3.0.10 installed PotPlayer is picking up .srt files associated with videos with no problems.

 

The usual rules apply where external subtitle files are concerned. I always have my media players configured to prefer external over embedded subtitles, and the external subtitle file should have the same name as the the video it is associated with.

Yes, me too. I've had the same setup for a long-ass time; I know how to use external .srt files. The only thing that's changed in my setup is that now Emby Theater is passing a streaming URL to my (and other people's) external player instead of the direct path. If that's not happening to you, that's great for you - I wish I knew what difference might cause it to happen to some of us but not you.

 

I installed PotPlayer just for kicks, and ET also passes the streaming URL to that as well, and it also cannot find the .srt file. (Which it can if I play files directly in it.)

 

I tested something new now - in ET I normally have the subtitles OFF, and I let my external players handle them completely (I enable them or disable them in the external player depending on if I need/want them or not). When I keep them turned off in ET as usual, none of the players have subtitles at all because they can't find the .srt files, as I've mentioned. 

 

But if I do turn subtitles on in ET first before I play an episode, then all players do play subtitles. But not from the .srt files - I don't know what ET does to pass subtitles to the external player(s), but they don't actually recognize the .srt files, and certain functions are limited because of this. Also, for some reason I can't skip forward or back at all (in any of the external players), which is a deal-breaker. And on top of that, whatever is happening to make the subtitles work, it apparently causes ffmpeg.exe to spike its CPU usage which causes playback to suffer to the point of unusability and sometimes the player(s) outright crash. (It's possible someone running a better PC than the old one I'm using might not see that issue.)

 

So basically what I've learned here is that PotPlayer fares no better, and that enabling subtitles in ET first before playing something is not a solution. (Not that I'd want to be dependent on a workaround that would require me to remember that in advance, anyway.)

 

So, still at square zero, all I need is ET to go back to passing the direct path to my external player(s).

MPC won't even run on my machine, VLC is the same as mpv. The server is streaming the media, so external subs won't work.

I don't understand why anyone uses an external player, anyway. Especially PotPlayer and VLC. PotPlayer uses mpv, and VLC is pretty much mpv, but not as good. MPC is junk, and MadVR is a nuisance.
