I havn't used Theater in a few years, but recently want to compare it to the Win Store app, see if anything is better between the 2. But I get "Your administrator has blocked this application...."Security warning. Will not install, even though I am an Admin and I have tried running the Setup as Admin user anyway. So regardless of why default registry settings vary, can emby incorporate changing those settings, or at the very least document it in the install instructions/wiki?

As I understand it this is because emby is not digitally signed? Before i drop over $100 on a premier subscription (or panic remove the server and apps :-) ) can someone please explain to me why emby is not digitally signed? Thanks!

Hi there, why do you think it affects the server installation? The server is digitally signed.

I advocated for Emby in the holiday deals threads when people brought up Plex but many would quit when seeing the initial install procedure fail. I ran into this on both Windows PC's when installing and they were just running the latest Win10 with little other software installed as they're my media servers. Installation needs to handle this without user intervention; this seems higher priority than new features IMHO. Edited January 5, 2021 by macv

Only the user administrator can make that call and should make the appropriate changes. But yes this has been a issue in Windows for years. But don't know the circumstances as I have never run into it.

I suggest adding some logging and error reporting as, notably, it happens on common systems (I didn't even build the box but bought it off-the-shelf from a big box retailer and a household brand name) with no modifications.

NoMorePlex 0 Posted May 1, 2021 Posted May 1, 2021 (edited) After the latest awful Plex UX updates, I am trying to switch to something else. Emby was at the top of my list, but when I tried to install a server on my Windows HTPC, I got the same Installer issue as above. The machine is pretty clean with Win 10 Pro and all the latest updates. If I were a regular user, I would stop right here and look for some other media server. But having a spare 30 minutes while the family is having fun outside, I decided to dig deeper and give Emby a second chance))) I checked the signing certificate, and it is ok. So, it is not a certificate issue anymore. Based on the latest documentation (the links above are for VS2015), I checked ClickOnce Trust Prompt policies. They are all set as "Disabled." Of course, I do not consider changing these policies in the Registry to install this one application. Since Microsoft disabled this by default - they had a reason. I am not messing with the security on the box that is always running in my house. It looks like MS is positioning ClickOnce only as an Enterprise deployment tool where Group Policies control registry. But for the home computers, they disabled it and no longer use ClickOnce for their own application distribution. I tried to push through this issue in the Sandbox Virtual Machine to see if registry change fixes the issue. And indeed if you change ClickOnce Trust Prompt for Internet=Enabled, I will see a prompt that allows me to run Emby installer. But it was only a baby step further because right after this I saw SmartScreen warning blocking the installer. Another set of users will stop right here... But I ignored the warning (since it was in the throw-away VM anyway) and continued... After this, the installation succeeded and I had to look though a dozen of configuration screens to make sure that all settings are up to my liking and all temp files are located on the drive where I want. I tried to use Emby on Samsung Smart TV and it took me at least an hour to make it work there. Primarily because there was no easy way to enter server IP address and login. These screens didn't have on-screen keyboard (like Emby has in the search bar later) and Samsung Smart Remote does not have an easy way to enter numbers or passwords... I finally removed password from the user and got it working. Default UI theme was a bit disappointing and felt dated, but at least it worked. Maybe Premium themes make it look better, but I am not ready to pay for the Premium without seeing if Premium themes actually make UX better. If they change only colors - it is not much use for me personally. Anyway, with some love from Emby team, it seems like a promising solution, so I will keep it bookmarked... Long story short, Emby Windows installation process seems to be oriented towards very techy users. Average user won't go through it. It would be great if Emby switches installers to something like MSIX, WiX, simplDeploy, Squirrel, or (better) push the apps through Windows App Store and make it really no-brainer. So, for now, Emby is a no-go for me (unfortunately), but I will probably look at it one more time in a month or two and see if the server installer installs smoothly and UX is improved on the Samsung Smart TV platform. Meanwhile, this post from MS team helped me solving ClickOnce installation issues before with one of my projects. Just in case it can improve current Emby ClickOnce installers... macv 2 Posted May 1, 2021 Posted May 1, 2021 You got a lot more confidence in MS making good decisions than I do though admittedly I've never delved into C# dev. I made the switch out of Plex right quick back in the day because it couldn't even detect what the playback device is capable of decoding. That made my PC transcode unnecessarily and was unusable as it couldn't keep up in real time. My guess is Plex users don't watch 4K. FWIW, been on Emby for a few years now and I haven't had issues related to that registry setting. But agreed that installation shouldn't require the manual step. The suggestions about changing installers sound promising, pls give it a shot, devs :)
Guest Posted May 1, 2021 Posted May 1, 2021 (edited) This to me sounds like a system specific issue though.. without even knowing or testing the EXACT cause I personally would not be sure that it would even be the actual fix. Use code signing to simplify application control for classic Windows applications (Windows 10) - Windows security | Microsoft Docs No issues here either... Group Policy usually stops specific applications from installing.. Not for sure how this would effect the system in question.. and Group Policy Settings are easily gotten to... Being that circumvention and undesired system operation can be triggered by anything you have done previously or in the history of the OS installation if not fixed to default. OR worst case the OS reinstalled. The 'Windows has protected your PC' error you will get a lot and you will get that in any type of installer. Usually you run the installer if you know where it came from and from a valid source. Other system protections should prevent an infection if it is contained in the installer to begin with. You get this notification quite often...valid or not.. and there is a way to turn it off. Edited May 1, 2021 by Guest
