2 Questions about remote access and local https port

Hi,

In Settings there is a section named "Advanced" or "Hosting". This is the mine:

5c3484ffc98b4_captura_20190108_120404.pn

And this is a section of my Dashboard:

5c35ec41f1d48_captura_20190109_134148.pn

The server is running in local http port (8096), there is no option to enable https in local. Nor, in my opinion, does it make sense to activate https on local connections.

My question is: does the "Local https port number" option make any sense?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And another question is about remote access. I have disabled this option, why the Dasboard shows "Remote (WAN) access" if it's inactive?

This leads to confusion when remote access is not activated.

Hi.  Yes, it makes sense because, when routing traffic through your router, you need to specify the local port for the target machine.  That is what that number is used for.

Make sense now?

I think you misunderstood me. I asked for the HTTPS option in local: does it make any sense?

If there isn't option to activate HTTPS in local (it's neither necessary nor do I think it worked properly. Are there SSL certificates for localhost?), what is the usefulness of that value?

By other side, it should not be necessary to open any port on the router for Emby in LAN. And in case someone had a router with a very restrictive configuration, the port that would have to open locally would be the HTTP port, not the HTTPS port.

I think the HTTPS port only makes sense for remote access and that's where Emby allows it to be activated.

I think I understood :).

If you were to allow access via HTTPS remotely, you would need to setup a rule in your router that would look something like this:

[External Port] ->  [Local IP Address]:[Local Port]

That is the port that this setting is referring to.

ok, it's usually the same port. But in any case, then what doesn't make sense is for that value to be shown if I have "Allow remote connections to this Emby Server." disabled.

Yes but it doesn't have to be.  You could have your external access be [ip]:4922 but the local be 4092 if you wish.

then what doesn't make sense is for that value to be shown if I have "Allow remote connections to this Emby Server." disabled.

Perhaps disabling it would make sense...

Happy2Play

Dashboard displayed "Remote (WAN) access" is removed when "Allow remote connections to this Emby Server."  is disabled, in next server release.

I think it should be better in below section:

5c375c9d8a999_captura_20190110_155345.pn

That way it only shows up when it makes sense to show it and when it really makes sense to change that value.

Technically it's possible to use https on the local network even with remote connections disabled. It's just not something that most people do.
