No matter what I do, I can't seem to get subtitles working with LAV splitter. I used to use Haali so this is all a bit new to me, but at this point I think I've digested half a dozen tutorials without it helping much.

I have uninstalled all codecs on my system, rebooted and reinstalled LAV.

I have set preferred language to "eng" and subtitles to "advanced" and *:eng" (also tried "normal"). If I press * during playback in MBT it even shows me there are two streams (subtitles or non) and allows me to select either. No subtitles in MBC either.

I know LAV splitter is doing something because when playback starts the system tray icon appears.

If I run the file in VLC I do get subtitles, so I know that works...

Any help appreciated.

Try installing xy-VSFilter - that's what I did and I have both internal and external subs working.

Thanks. That worked a treat!

Wonder why LAV was punishing me.

I have this installed and it runs during playback in MBT and I get subtitles. I can't figure out how to turn on subtitles in media Browser Classic. Until I can figure out why MBT won't let me log in on my PC, I have to use Classic and it is a poor experience without subtitles. I need to turn the sound up so loud that it interrupts others in the house.

MB Classic uses Windows Media Center, which is 64-bit. You need to install the 64-bit version of xy-VSFilter. I just tried it and it works just like the 32-bit xy-VSFilter fixes subtitles for MBT (which is 32-bit).

Thanks! That's perfect.

The one thing I'll add to that guide is that you need to install both 32 and 64-bit versions of xy-VSFilter, since you need 32-bit for MBT and 64-bit with MBC.

Feature request then would be to have MBT and MBC fix all that stuff on installation.

Still having issues actually, and the behavior is identical in MBT and MBC.

Internal subs work if I set LAV Splitter to "Default" and install xy-VSFilter for both 32 and 64-bit.

External subs (.srt files) do not.

lav can't do external subs but VA filter should be able to.

Thx. I know it doesn't do externals. That's why I'm loading xy-VSFilter. Do you have a link for VA filter? Because it seems clear to me now that xy-VSFilter is not starting. The green arrow never shows up.

The plot thickens.

I tried another movie with external subtitles, and that worked. So I tried some formats.

  • MKV works with external subs.
  • MPEG-4 video stream in an AVI works with one file but not with another. I tried the one that didn't work in VLC and the subs are picked up.

Maybe it's just that file... Hmpf... MediaInfo data below.

Sorry that was auto correct. I don't use lav and xy in MBC. I just tried MBT and did not get external subs to work at all. Turns out it does not support it so I don't see the point of installing xy,

All working now except the one that doesn't.

I did run into an interesting one. I have The Hunt for Red October with subs only for Russian parts. In Windows Media Player (which is 32-bit), it works fine. In MB Classic (which is 64-bit), it works fine. In MB Theater I get English subtitles for English parts, but no subs for the Russian bits! It's like the whole thing is reversed.

I give up.

For your misbehaving avi file - try muxing it into an mkv container, I'm pretty confident that will work.

  • Get mkvtoolnix
  • Open mkvmerge
  • Drag in your avi
  • Click "Start muxing"

Thanks for that. It has now "muxed" away and "everything was fine" as per mkvtoolnix, but xy-VSFilter still doesn't fire up with the new file. VLC shows the subs for the new file.

No big deal. I don't really like that movie. But this is bugging me...

You can use MKVMerge to throw the subtitle files into the container as well.
