MSattler 387
I've got one movie that seems to always remux DTS-HD 7.1. Which is odd since other BluRay's with DTS-HD 5.1 and True-HD just end up as PCM now. But in this case it seems to want to remux to AC-3? Any known reason for this? This is on a Shield. Interesting, I swear that for other DTS-HD BluRay rip's I end up getting PCM sent to the receiver. Will test when I get home. With the latest Shield updates I was pretty sure I saw either PCM or Dolby Digital Surround. Not AC3.

foghat 65
Oh well. There seems no interest in getting truehd to work right so i will just stick with plex. It plays this movie without any issues. Ture HD? Your original post talks about DTS-HD. Either wayy, I doubt that is the case - pretty sure I've read they are working on hd audio pass-through. All of my moves have one audio track - either DTS HD or Dolby TrueHD. My dts hd 5.1 movies end up playing as PCM. I can't even play DTS HD 7.1 movies - gives me a player error (tried with 3 different dts hd 7.1 movies). If I had to guess, I'd say this is because ac-3 does not support 7.1. But who knows. In your case, I bet it isn't even playing your HD audio track - as AC3 does not support 7.1, it probably picks the one it can play most 'natively' which look like your track 2 - DTS 5.1. Though I thought emby could pass through DTS so strange it is showing as transcoding to ac-3. Do you have DTS pass-through turned on in the options? I bet not. Try turn it on and see if it plays as DTS. Bet you dollars to donuts that if you were to remove all audio tracks except the dts hd 7.1 track, you would end up with the same player error I am getting. Edit: from your log file: Stream #0:1 -> #0:1 (dts (dca) -> ac3 (native)) Pretty sure dts(dca) means it is just using the DTS track - track 2. Try turn on DTS pass through and see what happens. RanmaCanada 360
Have you tried using SPMC as an external player at all? It is the ONLY way to play HD files on android and get all your sound right.
foghat 65
Have you tried using SPMC as an external player at all? It is the ONLY way to play HD files on android and get all your sound right. Plex plays HD audio fine. At least as far as I can tell - only stated using it on my Shield as a stop gap until emby supports it.
MSattler 387
Plex passes TrueHd and DTSHD through with no issues. Emby for 5.1 TrueHD and DTSHD will just play PCM. Emby for 7.1 DTSHD will simply remux the audio to AC-3. Plex on the Shield right now works perfectly. No transcoding and HD audio passing through without issues. Maybe they are working on it, but if you have not been able to tell, the things that get worked on are things Eric and Luke want to work on, not things Emby needs to keep up with plex, or things the userbase want. If the current solution is good enough for them, then it wont get changed. I mean look at the release notes as of late. There is nothing groundbreaking here. In fact the latest blog was about adding local users. We have had that forever. It is not that i am ungrateful, it is simply that they have shunned all the 3rd party developers except for one. And they don't cater to what the users want. How long did it take for people to convince Luke that everything transcoding wasnt ok? He didn't see it as a problem so it wasn't worked on. Plex isn't perfect by any means. But for no transcode/no remux playback with hd audio, it simply works.

Not that it really makes a difference one way or the other (as HD audio is just not supported right now), but as I noted above, the log file you provided is showing that the 7.1 HD track is not being played at all. Emby is selecting DTS track and transcoding to ac3 - probably because you don't have the dts pass-through option selected in the app. Offering to beta test HD audio is great, but if it isn't ready to be tested, it isn't ready to be tested. Grass is always greener..... I have been spending a decent amount of time in the plex forums over the past couple of days. You talk about not caring what users want - there are threads, 100s of posts long and years old (and still active) requesting a proper collection implementation. General consensus is: don't hold your breath and, generally speaking, Plex has gone 'corporate' and doesn't seem to care at all about what the 'hard core' users (i.e the plex pass holders who post to the forum) want. I think it awesome the Luke and ebr are so active in these forums and more often than not are genuinely trying to get issues peopel are having figured out. Pass through is selected in the app. All 5.1 movies play fine with PCM instead of transcoding. It's only 7.1 movies that I can duplicate it. While Plex isn't perfect, they are good at the main thing Plex is supposed to do. Play back content to it's fullest capability. It's great that Emby has so many bells and whistles and features, but if you cannot get the basics right, who cares about the bells and whistles? At least Plex sold out and that is the cause for not listening, they made money off the product, and it works for 90% of the people. Emby on the other hand has 2 developers who make their living off of the product, but have no real desire to listen to the users. The fact that we are still talking about the lack of HD Audio Passthrough is an issue. There simply is no interest in fixing it because it isn't an issue for the dev's. That is my whole point on this. If Luke see's something he wants to fix, it's fixed immediately. If it's not something that concerns him, he doesn't bother with it. Just take a look at the beta releases. How many times has he put out a beta release that forces someone to reinstall, or immediately fail back because it was not fully tested. Because he only tests it for what he uses it for. I mean, take the Player Info sticky in this forum for instance. It was last updated in June. What good is a sticky when it is 6 months old, and there have been numerous client changes along the way..... foghat 65
Which probably makes sense since HD Audio is not supported. Though it is strange that it is transcodiing to AC3 - if you have the DTS pass-through enabled as you say. Try removing all audio tracks except the 7.1 DTS HD track from your movie - I bet it doesn't play at all (none of mine do), which obviously is not great. Or maybe I am reading the log wrong and the 7.1 hd track is playing. I don't know. I want to see HD Audio support on the Shield app very badly (and I believe it will come). But given, I bet, that the Shield app user base is likely much smaller than probably any other app user base, and, as you say, there seems to just be Luke and ebr (for the most part), I understand why it may not be a priority them (as disappointing as this is to me). Plus, need to keep in mind, the app isn't using a custom built video player - not sure if it is still the case, but at one point the player being used did not even support HD audio pass-through - in which case there is nothing ebr or Luke can do. Short of changing to a supported player, which probably opens up a whole lot of other complexities/work. Edited December 2, 2016 by foghat

Family members are still using Emby for now, but it just makes zero sense for me to keep dicking with this.
