Scrapbookee 1 Posted April 27, 2016 Posted April 27, 2016 (edited) I am a bit confused about how Emby works with iOS and playing within the Emby app on an iPad. From this page: https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Wiki/wiki/iOS Emby for iPhone and iPad can handle just about any type of media thanks to Emby Server transcoding. If you would like to learn how to prepare your media for Direct Play, read below. The first sentence, to me, implies that I can play any format of video on my iPad. But then we get to direct play, which states Direct Play Media Formats Video — H.264/AVC (.MP4, .MOV, .M4V) Can someone explain this to me? If only .mp4, .mov, and .m4v are supported for iPad, is Emby transcoding even useful for iOS? Am I missing some setting somewhere or something that would let me play other formats in the Emby app on my iPad? I was recommended Emby from a friend and neither of us knew I'd have to reformat half my library just to play on the iPad. Edited April 27, 2016 by Scrapbookee
Luke 38831 Posted April 27, 2016 Posted April 27, 2016 Hi, welcome. In other words, what it means is that it will direct play the content if the device supports it natively, otherwise it will convert on the fly with Emby Server transcoding. Either way, it will play.

That would be amazing, if I could make that happen. Is there a setting I need to set to make this happen? I've only ever had my iPad refuse to play a video when it's a non-supported format. So say I have an mkv file I want to play, my iPad Emby app will say "There was an error" repeatedly until I redownload in a supported format. I would absolutely LOVE to get this to work, but I just don't know how. Thoughts?

If this isn't working then we're happy to help. Please see how to report a media playback issue and we'll go from there. Thanks!
