OK got you, but where in the dashboard and how will I know its started direct streaming and not transcoding?

Is his internet stable at home? With decent speed? Do you know? Because I stream from my brothers remote server across country and I direct stream everything and the playback doesn't stutter. I don't know about 1080p, but the best way is to test and find the best outcome

My Internet is BT fibre about 40MB down and 9.5MB up. Its a decent connection normally.

His connection I am not sure he is on Virgin Media Fibre which is normally faster think its 50MB

I will probably be taking his laptop to his house this evening, he lives less than 1 mile away from me.

Under active device, simply mouse over the one for Kodi :) it will indicate what it's doing

Btw we made the playback smarter in that it will try to direct play first unless you've selected play from http. Then if it fails, it will try to direct stream instead. If it fails (bitrate too low vs what is required) then it will transcode for you.

OK I can see that now.

I have set the Kodi add-on to 7.7MBps and playing the same 1080P MKV it now says direct streaming. The Kodi video cache is now staying at 100% and its not buffering.

Like I said I need to try this from his house this evening remotely.

So Direct play is not over HTTP then?

In the Kodi add-on settings I have "Play from HTTP instead of SMB" selected.

ffmpeg is no longer running on the server during direct play which is good! Obviously when its transcoding that's when ffmpeg kicks in and eats the CPU

Direct play is only when Kodi can access the file directly because it's available locally or via network. For remote access, direct stream is equivalent to direct play, in the sense that there will not be transcoding happening when the server streams the content it will stream the file as is.

OK thanks, that makes sense now!

Yeah, transcoding should not be necessary at all in Kodi because it supports pretty much every format. If the selected video quality bitrate is lower than the actual content bitrate, Emby server will transcode to match the lower bitrate requested (only useful in the situation where your internet is slow and you need to convert high quality profile into lower quality like SD, for example)

So I think it sounds like it might be better to leave that Video Quality setting in the Kodi add-on at its default of 100MB HD.

Yes that is correct or select the highest appropriate bitrate. I use remote direct stream everyday and i only enabled play from http and left video quality at default settings. No lag or long buffering. I think the longest I've waited was like 3secs for the show to start playing while direct streaming.

OK great I've set it back to its default. I am taking the laptop back to my brothers in about an hour so will test it remotely soon  :D

He is going to be well happy!

Kodi played everything we tried but 1080p mkvs kept pausing. This was wired on his LAN. 720p play fine.

It even did 720p mkv on Wi-Fi in the Media Browser Windows 8.1 app!

He's happy anyways and I was pretty impressed as well.

I've got all the kids tv and movies in Emby now, still need to import the bulk of the adult movie and tv content and the music library.

Actually I am wrong the two 1080p movies that weren't playing well are Apple .MOV

I've asked him to play a certain movie title, I know is 1080p MKV in Kodi, suspect that will play OK.

The .MOV were maybe transcoding. I take it the is no way in Kodi to know if it's Direct Stream or Transcoding?

We were also pressing O on the keyboard to see the on screen playback diagnostics in Kodi.

Thanks

Yeah, it only tells in the dashboard currently, I think. .mov didn't work? I'll have to check it out. Ty for reporting :)

I can post up some mediainfo for the mov files tomorrow if that helps. They played but paused and started a lot.

Did you have a chance to check in the dashboard to see if the .mov content was being transcoded or direct stream?

@@cw-kid oops and yes if you can post the media info. Thanks :)

These were the two .MOV 1080P  (according to Kodi's media icons) that we played and that kept pausing.

Looking at the video width and height they don't look like 1080p. But Kodi was definitely displaying them as "HD" and I'm fairly certain when pressing Info on the remote on each title it showed the 1080P media flag as well.

I'm using the Xperience1080 Kodi skin not sure how accurate it is with the media info flags but I assume it's Kodi itself which reads the mediainfo of the content.

The plot thickens!

On my Kodi HTPC in the lounge which is still connected to the MySQL database, those two .MOV titles (If you are jumping in here, read further up this thread) are showing as SD and 480P, which seems right with what the MediaInfo application is reporting.

Yet on my brothers Laptop, Kodi connected to Emby showed them as HD and 1080P.

I have just looked at Kodi on my Windows 7 laptop which is connected to Emby and those two titles on there are also showing as HD and 1080P.

Something very wrong here with the mediainfo in Emby!

I then looked in the .nfo files for these two titles.

Here is the MediaInfo section from the nfo file of the Anastasia title: (I am unsure if this is the untouched nfo that Kodi exported or if this nfo has since been changed by Emby)

Not sure why there are two <video> sections ?

But clearly Kodi PCs connected to Emby are displaying incorrect mediainfo, which is worrying to say the least.

I bet its down to that damn Emby Server Kodi nfo import code, it seems full of holes and bugs. Or the Kodi video library export routine for the nfo files is not right.

I also bet if I refreshed this title in the Emby metadata manager that this mediainfo would change and be corrected.

This looks like I have uncovered another big issue!

Also the aspect ratio flag is missing in the Kodi connected to Emby but is not missing in the Kodi connected to MySQL.

I've just gone in to the metadata manager and advanced refreshed the Anastasia title. And then in Kodi connected to Emby I reset the local database and now.....

The media info flags for this title are still incorrect and are still showing as HD and 1080p.

So what does this tell us? MediaInfo is not working correctly in Emby? Or the information in the nfo exported by Kodi is incorrect?

I then renamed the .nfo file to .old so Emby would not read it. I then refreshed the title again in the metadata manager. I then reset the local Kodi database again and now....

Looking at this title in Kodi the media info flags are still incorrect and say HD and 1080P.

And looking back in the folder on the file server Emby has created a new .nfo file itself. And looking in this nfo file it also has two <video> sections, so I think it is Emby doing this not Kodi!

Hi

I have just discovered issues with MediaInfo in Emby with the Kodi add-on for Emby vs plain old Kodi and MySQL.

Please see here for full details and findings.

Thanks.
