If it starts transcoding because of quality settings defined by user or auto selected by Emby, allow server owners to increase their quality settings in order to prevent transcoding when it isn't necessary.

Here where it says: Reducing bitrate due to quality settings we should have a quality settings drop down menu. So I can forcefully increase users quality setting to prevent transcoding as well as make quality better for the user.

Hi, the quality setting is a per-app setting, not a user setting. I think the next release of the server will help make this a little more clear.

So maybe a more appropriate server option would be to ignore the user's quality setting.

Hello,

When user is watching live and we see that it is getting transcoded like we can send a message to that client we could also send a command to this client to force change the quality settings for this client.

Hi, that is much more complicated. It is better to just prevent it to begin with, right?

Though that this method should be easier to implement as option to send a message to the client already exists. So server could just send to client json example: {"changeQuality": 10} and if client can parse this json than don't show this message to the user, but just change their quality to 10Mbps.

But yeah your method would solve this problem as well.

Why can't you just speak to your "user" and educate them? I mean they are friends or family right?

Maybe they've set lower quality intentionally to save on their data cap, or to reduce bandwidth over a limited internet connection? I'd be quite annoyed if somebody else enforced this for me at a server level.

Some people are not technical and if I always need to remind them to increase quality settings from 1Mbps to 2Mbps in order to prevent transcoding it would annoy both me as well as the user.

In Slovenia everyone has unlimited bandwidth (Only bandwidth cap would apply on mobile data). I also don't think you can get internet lower than 10Mbps. Average user here has more than 100Mbps.

My sister is at home while it's getting transcoded from 2Mbps to 1Mbps. Here the problem is that she forgot to turn on WIFI on her phone. Asking Emby to warn the user that they are on mobile data would probably be too much to ask. I also don't feel constantly monitoring in order to prevent encoding when it is not necessary (quality settings). In this example it is better to be laggy for user, so he would know that something is wrong and maybe notice that he is on mobile data and not on wifi.

So wouldn't you forcing her bitrate to something higher just make her playback not play properly in this instance?

Correct, and instead of wasting limited mobile data, having worse watching experience (lower quality than original). Laggy video should remind her that something is wrong and this should result in her realising that she forgot to turn on her wifi.
