OpenSubtitles.org API change seems to have broken Emby subtitle search

Ah, thanks, I thought it best to check before I register with the same credentials as my existing one!

Hmmm. Ok, so I shutdown Emby server, copied over that opensubs dll over all the instances I could find on my PC and rebooted, but after the reboot it's still showing the same issue.

I've re-checked the VIP box in the Opensubs page but still nada. Did I miss something?

Are you using the right credentials? The accounts themselves are separate even if the sites belong to the same organization. If you were a legacy .org member the migrated account to .com might have a different name. For example, an "_" character was appended to my username when migrated from .org to .com.

Disregard if the updated plug-in doesn't connect to a user account.

Ah, thanks.

I had used the same as my .org one, which was fine, it picked up my VIP details, but it has changed the first character from upper to lower case. I was definitely using the correct credentials but it didn't like it, but I've changed the password to a shorter one (16 random characters) and it has now accepted them.

Thanks!

I think I recall going through this a few years ago when I initially set up Emby... the age-old question of "is the plugin asking for my username, email address, or would either suffice"?

Unzipped the linked plugin above, odd results when manually searching. The fact that I have Addic7ed plugin also installed made me wonder where the search found the results. (this pretty obvious on the desktop, but the Android TV client gives zero info).

So, uninstalled Addic7ed, tried the new opensubtitles.com plugin both ways, it doesn't work if I use my email address for my VIP account. I had to change it to my username.

So odd. Even worse, why can't I remember this 3 years later? How about a reminder on the settings page for the plugin devs?

Just an FYI for the occasional Googler who comes though here wondering why they don't seem to be automatically getting subtitles from opensubtitles.com.

A belated Merry Christmas and Happy New Year's to all. I was going to start a new thread about the subtitle issue that I have but thought it best to chime in here since it is related. I don't know what other peeps do in regard to subtitles but unless the subtitles come with the movie (mkv file) I download my own subtitles from wherever I need to. This allows me to check the sync of the SRT file and make changes as necessary.  So, with this in mind, I would like to see the option when searching for subtitles, that MB allows the user to search the local drive which is where my subtitles reside when I download them myself. Reason being is because Open Subtitles does not always have the correctly synced file all the time therefore an edit is necessary to fix it. So, if in addition to the open subtitles search there was also a local search function that would be awesome. Cheers!!!

Manually? I'm hoping you'll tell me there's a program to assist with this.

I think I once found a janky website to edit srt files, but it was a PITA.

Well, sort of manually. But I run the video file through a series of programs to get it done. Can't remember the old programs but now I use Audials and Boom. Can't remember if it was and Adobe or Cyberlink product but it did the job. Time has since moved to a new generation of tools and much faster, not simpler but faster. Downside is editing the srt takes time and I can only handle doing 3 movies in about 8 hours. Mostly because i get into the movie and forget that I am editing...lol.

The OpenSubtitles plugin is specifically about retrieving subtitles from the OpenSubtitles website/api.

The subtitle search screen doesn't come from this plugin. It comes from the main Emby client.

I did a quick search for your request and didn't find anything in the Feature Request forum, so I think you'd be best off creating a request post there:

Well then consider my comments as a request for such an enhancement. I didn't realize that a person needed to "formally" ask for a feature but just to simply mention it in a post would suffice. Although I have only been on this forum since 2018, I guess some things have changed. Anywayz, thanks for the input.

It's actually a helpful suggestion to make the request in that forum. Other people go there to look for, comment and "vote" on feature requests. Your idea can get more traction over there and this thread will be forgotten over time.

Wow, you have a lot of patience! For most things I find that the offset subtitles option on playing back generally gets them into sync once I've found some that are correct but out of sync. I seem to get the odd TV show where the subs slit throughout the episode but it's easier to change the offset during playback than manually edit them all, especially as I tend to delete TV shows are we've watched them (not movies though, I have an archive for those!)

Two possible causes, both fairly easily fixed with a decent subtitle editor:

First - subtle differences in frame rate (e.g. 29.97 vs 20 fps), which the editors have facilities to adjust for.

Second - different editing to remove commercial breaks, so different offset adjustment from each break onwards is needed - again a standard facility.

Works great !:

  • Installed Opensubtitle.com v1.0.42 in my Emby v4.7.14.0
  • Created an account at www.opnsubtitles.com
  • Entered the user+password in Emby opensubtitles.com plugin (non VIP)

Thanks ! , see also topic:

The obvious one is called - wait for it... Subtitle Edit !

This is under regular development, and once when I sent the developer a bug, he responded with a new beta containing a fix later the same day.

For SSA/ASS subs I prefer Aegisub (it doesn't handle any other kinds of subtitle); this is an old program which was abandoned over ten years ago, but which a number of people have brought back to life, updating dependencies, fixing bugs, and adding necessary features.  Recently Subtitle Edit has greatly improved its handling of SSA/ASS files, but it is still not my first choice for them.  Aegisub is the tool used for making those elaborate karaoke animations is some anime.

Beyond those two there is nothing of interest as far as I can see (except I have a couple of specialist programs for OCR of different types of graphical subs).

Will this be going in the plugin store for automatic updates anytime soon?

What do you mean by that? Which server version you're on?
