Issues with certain subtitle formats

Hi all. I saw several recent threads complaining about subtitle issues but felt none of them matched exactly my case. They might be related though.

I am having problems with subtitles when they are in ASS format. The playback starts normally but it seems Emby app is unable to properly load the subtitles.
Also I should note that:

  • The issue does not happen if playing the same media from a browser;
  • The issue does not happen if the subtitles are in SRT format;
  • The issue does not happen on LG webOS app. (I changed my TV a few weeks ago)

Server log is attached.
Server version is 4.7.14.0 arm64 running on Raspberry Pi 4 Model B.
Client version is Emby for Samsung 1.6.4 installed through USB using this procedure (not listed in store for my country yet).

Please tell if further logs or debugging steps are required.
Thanks in advance.

A few questions:

  • What is the language of the ASS subs?
  • Is it an internal or external ass file/stream?
  • How long are you waiting during playback for the subtitles to load?

The reason I ask is that with common languages, the subtitle font is built-in, but it can still take up to 10-15 seconds for subtitles to start appearing. If it is a less common language and we need to load a separate font file, it can take up to 45 seconds for the font file to be processed and subtitle display to commence.

About your questions:

  1. Language is PT-BR
  2. Internal and external. For testing external subtitles I grabbed a .srt file and converted it to .ass using Aegisub. Emby client is capable of loading the SRT file but not the ASS file. Changing back and forth between them didn't work for ASS, but in all cases the client was able to load the SRT.
  3. Around a minute. I also tried to seek to arbitrary timestamps and playing from beginning.

Any chance to support PGS subs and direct play? I know that another media player managed to do that recently for their Samsung app, it's really helpful cuz with them it doesnt really matter where the subtitle is positioned and if you can or cannot change the position as PGS have their own fixed position, the downside atm is that you cant direct play it.

Subtitle tags for position appear on TV. Ex: {\an8}Hello world !

Is this with 1.2.6? It's been fixed in later versions

The version is 1.6.4, the last version for Tizen. Is there another more recent version?
The font style (italic, bold) appear on TV as a regular font.

Ex:

Hello world appear on TV: Hello World, instead of Hello Word

Hello world appear on TV: Hello World, instead of Hello Word

On PC all it's OK.

Can you provide more information such as the file and subtitle format, it is internal or external subtitles, etc?

However, I'm guessing it's an srt file, in which case your answer is probably here

Yes, you have right.
SRT uses a different method for positioning: X1:… X2:… Y1:… Y2:…

Oh my god... Good news. The font style appear correctly on TV when the subtitle is external.
When is internal (matroska container, mkvmerge v74.0.0) didn't work. But why?

Best regards.

On your site you mention the supported formats:

  • ass
  • srt
  • ssa
  • sub/idx
  • vtt

The format *.srt, *.vtt work only external (i checked). ASS and SSA didn't work. I will try if work inside the matroska container.

Hello, again.
Conclusion: the formats ASS and SSA didn't show under any circumstances (internal, external).
The SRT and VTT format show in both cases, but font style works only if the subtitle is external.

Best regards.

Hi, can you provide a sample video for testing? Thanks.

ASS has been fixed in the next updated. I will have a look at embedded srt issues, if you can provide an example that would be appreciated.

Thx for fixing ASS subs...I use them constantly.

Also, I have to say that gray, light gray and dark gray are great options for reducing subtitle blooming (I was using ASS for this, but now I can use SRT subs). There is one tiny issue: gray is darker than dark gray. Not a big problem, just saying...

I don't have a problem with SRT subs and format styles...

When the subrip is embedded, we usually rely on the internal player manage the subtitle stream instead of extracting it on the server which can be slow. The problem is that when the internal player extracts the internal subrip stream it removes any formatting characters. This is why they render as plain text instead of bold or italics
