So basically: One core app and the option to switch the layout? The same principles as OneSky where one string is translated and can then be used in any client? If I've understood it correctly then it does sound like a wonderful solution. Should I go out of my way to make a feature request or is this already noted?

You are already seeing that with sideloaded standard Android app, as that is basically ET for Android in TV mode.

While you're technically speaking the truth, it's not in a mass-release kind of state like the streamlined ATV app. It's laggy (I've made a ticket for this) and still very much made for mobile use (switching subtitles opens a screen blocking the whole player). ASS subtitles plays especially bad. On top of that I'd have to manually update the APK since it doesn't come from the play store. It's a solution, just not a permanent one.
