New Free Playback and Increased Device Limits

The Emby team hopes you and yours are enjoying a Happy Holiday Season.  We would like to announce a couple of changes that will hopefully increase the value of Emby in all of your households.

First, to aid in the transition from our old TV-only Android TV app to the new Standard Android app on that platform, we will be eliminating the need for the app unlock by allowing free playback for up to five TV devices per Emby Server.  Devices beyond that limit will require Emby Premiere.  Previously purchased unlocks will still be honored.

This should allow most households to move to the new app more easily.

Second, recognizing that today's households have more and more devices, we are increasing our standard Emby Premiere License device limit from 25 to 30.  We will then also increase the extended premiere plans from 45 to 50 and 75 to 80.   Existing extended subscriptions will remain the same but new ones will be at these new levels.  All standard licenses will be automatically updated to the new 30 device limit immediately.

You should see all of these changes rolling out over the next week or so.

Happy Holidays from the Emby Team!

Will the 25-device lifetime be increased to 30?

And the 45-device lifetime to 50? (Its not avaliable to buy anymore)

Also with the "hopefully increase the value" you mean also the price for bigger plans?

Example of the 75 device at 19,99$ to 80 device at 23,99$

Price per device before: $0.27

Price per device after: $0.30

The 30 device still have the same price as before 4,99$

And now the price per device Is: 0,17$

Shouldn't it be the other way around? Usually the more you buy, the less you pay. The 30 device now Is way more convenient

This is not to say that I disagree and will not pay anymore. Of course you can do what you want and as long as the software is worth the price I will continue to use it.

PS: It would be great to know which users are using how many devices. I know it's done on purpose so that it can't be known.

Sorry for the long post. Happy New Year

@ebrI also purchased a Lifetime 45 device plan, since it was a one time payment and not a subscription, does that mean it is now change to 50 devices or still remains at 45 devices?

Thanks,

Duane

If I previously paid for an app unlock on the Android TV app (on my Google Chromecast), will that unlock credit apply if I switch to the Standard Android app? Or will it count towards the 5-device free limit?

Is there anywhere I can see how many devices are counted towards the server limit? From the server Devices config, I just see a complete list of every device that has ever connected. Is there a way to kick a device off the list?

So eventually people that use "Emby for fire tv" will stop working at some point?

Life time... And now since a few days this... removed almost all devices. Still saying this. Cause devices that not get used anymore it also counts.
Like there  is an update  for the browser.... new device.
I cant  login to see  weekly  to see if that happend and remove devices.
And now i read there can be added more devices i keep receiving this message. very strange.

```
How long does a device count towards my limit?
The system tracks device usage for about a week. So you need to count only devices used regularly by your users when estimating the limit for you. It is important to understand this is a device access limit NOT a concurrent connection limit.```
Well this cannot be true.. If it was, then i would not get this message.
Removed all exept one. And still it says im almost at my limit. Reboot server  did not help.
Browsers are not included.
Also, removing devices from the 'Devices' page makes no difference to the calculation, devices are tracked internally only.
Then its time to go jellyfin. Lifetime for only a few users is not worth it for me then.  😪
It seems clear that Emby's terms of use may change for worse in the near future. Just in case, I will start planning the migration to Jellyfin.
Thanks.
Emby's and Twitch APK terms refer to the rules and conditions governing the use of Emby’s media server software and Twitch's live streaming platform, covering user rights, content access, privacy policies, and acceptable use across both services.
How's that?
The App unlock feature while great in theory and spirit, could at times get convoluted & frustrating, often times having the end-user, his/her system admin, Emby support & billing staff, not to mention mods and power users all trying to help the end-user, only to find, after many back and forth messages, the store transaction was declined, never completed, was for a different app or purchased using a different account.
To me it seems clear, Emby is providing a richer experience by having more client app choices available to use without needing a Premiere license.
At the same time expanding the standard license count for Premiere devices from 25 to 30 or 20%.
Emby makes additional features available to non-Premiere systems as well as add additional value to the standard subscription by increasing the Emby Premiere active device license count by 20% for no additional cost.
Why jump ship when nearly everyone is receiving additional benefits? What's not to like?
Reading all the comments, I see that the device limit is a very common issue.
including myself having frustrating problems.  I have 5 devices in my home and am still getting the premiere device limit exceeded. Why am I having this pop up on my screen when I have 5 devices, that is with in allowed amount of devices in my account?
When will the new free 5 per tv client apps be in action? Right now I am still seeing offer to buy subscription when trying to play a movie from android client on Chromecast with Google TV
@Luke Since I paid to unlock the Android TV app, and now that using the app on TV does not require any payment
Could you atleast give the users who paid for the TV app Skip Intro feature?
Or like how is the purchase honoured?
You're using the new Emby for Android and not the Android TV (Theater) version?
Are you sure you don't have 5 other Emby for Android devices in use that could have already used the 5 free full playback device licenses?
Skip Intro is a Premiere Feature.
The individual unlock license to get full playback will no longer be available for purchase moving forward, but any devices with an existing unlock is still honored as posted in the announcement. You are not losing any functionality, just gaining functionality by way of the 5 new licenses you will now have.
Yes of course I am using new Emby for Android, with new UI and all. I have the Android TV version separately on the same TV because I paid for the app unlock there but I'm not discussing that.
And ahaha yes, I am sure I don't accidentaly have 5 other TVs in use lol. I have only one TV, the one which still asks for subscription when I try to play amything (or 1 minute of playback)
Same issue as @kelstar,
Server 4.8.10.0, FireTV App 3.4.16 asking me for license or 1 minute play.
Only thing that goes beyond 5 devices are like 30 browser instrances most of them marked over three years ago on Devices tab.
I sideloaded android app (3.4.36 arm7) onto my fire tv 4k 2nd gen and that works now!
HI, yes we'll be getting this update to the store soon. Thanks for the feedback.
Does this mean that the Emby for Android TV app will be removed from the Google Playstore?
If so, when will this be happening?
Hi, we’ve never said that, so certainly not anytime soon.
So if the Emby for Android TV app is still available, does that mean the App Unlock can still be purchased for that specific app?
