Image file in artist folder not used

In my music library there are some artists without image (because Emby does not find an image itself).

To fix this, I tried to add an image (with the name "default.jpg") to the artist folder, like described in the Wiki. But Emby does not uses this image. What am I doing wrong?

Hi.  Have you tried right-clicking on the artist and selecting "Edit Images" and providing an image that way?

It will use this image in the folder browsing view. But we do not associate folders with artists anymore and that is why it is not used with the artist.

@ebr: Yes, that's what I have done in the past. But I thought, by adding the image as a file (as described in the Wiki), Emby would pick it up automatically and this "manually added information" don't get lost if I have to move the data to a new server someday.

Usually, I don't like to have all the meta data stored in the media folder. If all the images and NFO files with meta data, that Emby automatically retrieves from the internet, are stored with the media files, everything gets cluttered and confusing. But to add only a few images for those exceptions, where no (or only a wrong) image is available, would be OK (to persist this information). That's why I tried it, but it doesn't work :-(

@Luke: Yes, ebr already suggested that, and I did it this way in the past. But as I wrote, I'm looking for a way to provide "manually added meta data" in a persistent way.

How would Emby store the image inside the media folder, if I use the image editor and if I had selected the "store meta data inside the media folder" option? Couldn't I provide the image the same way, even if I don't want to select this option?

I already thought about a feature request like: If meta data is not stored inside the media folder, but manually changes to meta data is done in the Emby web app (and updates are deselected for this data), there could be an option to exceptionally store this manually changed meta data in the media folder, to make it persistent. But this requires that Emby uses such data ;)

When you add an artist image via the image editor, it is stored in:

[Metadata path]\metadata\artists\[artist name]

which, conceivably, could be curated manually (outside the image editor, but why?).

Note: I back this folder up periodically, as it is currently NOT covered by the backup plugin.

Hi d00zah,

thanks, but what you wrote does not answer my question. I know where Emby stores it's meta data and of course it's possible to manually modify the data there, but as you already wrote: Why should I do this?

I'm looking for a way to provide some meta data (images or even NFO files) together with some media files. That way I could simply copy the media files to another (new) server and it will automatically pick up those files and I don't have to do all the manual changes again using the image editor or the metadata manager.

Lately I had to copy a complete library over to a second server and had to redo all the manual changes I did using the metadata manger or the image editor. So I noticed it would be a nice feature, if manually changed data could be stored with the media files, so that it is automatically picked up by Emby. I don't like to have all the meta data stored in the media folder, but only the few manual changes.

I remembered the Wiki contains lists of possible names for images you can add to your media, so I tried to add an image for a music artist this way, but it doesn't work. But you can tell Emby to store all meta data inside the media folder, so there could be a way to provide such an image.

I understood. I archive the 'artists' folder periodically, & when rebuilding my server, just extract the archive to the new metadata path prior to defining libraries (or importing a backed up config). Imperfect, but nothing is lost & the only time it takes is for the extraction... as you suggest. I do the same for 'collections' (from server 'data' folder). Upon initial scan, all (~) my changes are there.

Hi d00zah,

I understand what you try to tell me, but that's not what I try to do here.

Of course it's somehow possible to archive (all) the metadata and try to copy it to a new server, but I don't want to archive all metadata.

In a perfect world you would provide a folder with media files to Emby, and Emby automatically gets all the related metadata for it. But of course the world isn't perfect, so there are some files that need manual changes to the metadata. I was looking for a way to do the manual changes in a persistent way.

Currently you can choose between two options.

1) You can tell Emby to store all the metadata inside the media folder. That makes it easy to keep all metadata (even the manually changed data) and to move it to a different server (all data or only part of it). But it adds many additional files to the media folder and therefore I don't like it. Especially as it is not really necessary to archive all the metadata that Emby collected by itself.

2) You can tell Emby to store all metadata somewhere else. This keeps the media folder clean and clear, but it is difficult to keep manual changes if you move part of the media files to a different server.

As I wrote, recently I moved the media files of one library from one server to another. Not all files from the first server and the moved files where added as a new library (beside the already existing libraries) to the second server. As far as I can tell, there is no (easy) way to copy (only)  the related metadata as well. So I had to redo all manual changes on the second server.

That made me think of a third option that could be useful: All the automatically retrieved metadata is stored outside the media folder, but manual changes are stored with the media files. That way, only some metadata files are stored inside the media folder, but you can simply move media files to a different / new server and all the manual changes are still there. The media folder wouldn't be filled up with many metadata files, but you could still keep / provide some automatically used own metadata for some media files where necessary.

By reading the Wiki I had the impression, that it is already possible to provide at least your own images with the media files. So I tried it with the image for an artist, but it didn't work. That's why I asked why it didn't work and if there is a different way to provide the image with the media files so that it is used by Emby.

I am running Emby 4.0.1.0

Took an newly added music album with it's parent folder (album artist) and copied to other server on other location.
The original server seems to find and save album artist metadata on the NFO file located under artists path.

Indeed if I change one picture or text on metadata, the NFO is updated and the picture can be found on the path:

5c48aa4db8590_l2.jpg

Second server, though received the whole package (album artist folder and the album folder under it), shows some other text, other pictures and has no info on the album artist path:

5c48ab09a1940_l3.jpg

I also could not locate these info on the metadata path (c:\users\[uSER]\AppData\Roaming\Emby-Server\programdata\metadata\artists).
I really can't figure out where it is located.
It really does not matter anyway: real problem is Emby ignores NFO data just added.

I can edit the .db and insert the correct path on the mediaitens table but it just not seems to be a viable option for every new album artist..

Sorry for not being clear.

I am trying to deploy both an album and it's album artist.

They are on a server with their custom images and metadata stored both on Emby's database and the .nfo files.

So I grab the parent folder (the album artist) and copy to another server.

I am adding to a second server the folder structure containing all info and mp3 files from the original server.

On previous versions, Emby would rescan the library, pickup the info on artist.nfo and album.nfo, all images accordingly updating the database.

Problem now is that the artist nfo is ignored by the rescan process and there is no means to make Emby link that newly added artist to the .nfo sitting on the folder.

(sorry for the poor english)

Most important feature for me would be to have the images in artist folder to be possible to be used as an artist image. I have lot of files in my library. Many local underground artists, that do not have any pictures in official metadata sources. Album images are OK through mp3 embedded images, but for artist image there is no way to have it locally from media folder. I will not start to add pictures to Emby metadata folders, more permanent and easy solution needed. I really wish some day artist images in media folders would be supported.

I tag my music using MusicBrainz Picard. But for many artists there is no possibility to have artist image.

There currently is no correlation with folders and artists, but it is possible for the future. At present it is all tag driven. You can always use the web interface to customize an image. Thanks.

I also don't understand why local artist thumbs and fanarts are not supported anymore.

It worked in the past and what is easier than using the artwork already present in the artist folders?

I also have many unknown artists where no artwork can be found via online media sources.

I spend quiet some time searching the internet for useful artwork.

Manually adding these images via the image editor is no option for me here.

Please make this possible again.

I'm in the same position, spent a lot of time putting together custom artwork for jazz ensembles etc, disappointed to upgrade to v4 and see that there are no longer artist backdrops in album view. Strange when the backdrops are there in the folders and are still used in the 'album artist' screen. Really hoping there is some simple way of getting this working again.

Had to rebuild Emby's database. Rescan all libraries from the beginning.

All content still present (both on the NFO files and the images on artists folder) was ignored.

There are no means I am aware to "point" artists on Emby to their correct library folder except using queries on DBBrowser.

It just does not make sense Emby should ignore artists' NFO files and honor album NFO files.

As previously stated there is no means to port info from one installation to other.

I understand that by editing library.db (DB Browser) and changing the artist's path does the trick.
I was manually editing every and such new artist added to the database in order to Emby "see" it's folder and, thus, folder.jpg and fanart.jpg.

I wonder... Would there be a query in order to do that "database wide"?
