    Overview: Color and luminance handling

Color and luminance handling connect brightness adaptation with gamut limits, highlight shape and changing scene content.

A brightness adjustment can affect the appearance of color as well as light. Peak detection and highlight roll-off influence the luminance treatment; gamut mapping addresses colors outside the destination's range. Scene adaptation connects those choices to content that changes over time, giving the curve an appropriate context.

    • Gamut mapping
Gamut mapping adapts colors that fall outside the range the target color space or display can reproduce.

    • Peak-luminance detection
Peak-luminance detection estimates the brightness range present in decoded pictures so tone mapping can respond to the content.

    • Highlight roll-off
Highlight roll-off gradually reduces the separation between bright input levels so they fit below the output limit.

    • Scene-adaptive tone mapping
Scene-adaptive tone mapping changes its mapping over time according to the brightness characteristics of the current scene.
