Overview: Playback and streaming
A playback session connects source access, compatibility decisions, optional conversion, delivery and player presentation.
Pressing Play starts a chain of operations. The server must locate a readable source, select a supported representation and deliver data at a useful rate; the player must decode, buffer and present that data.
The branches below expose different parts of that chain. Conversion topics explain changes to media, streaming topics explain its transport, and player or casting topics explain which device performs the final work. Diagnostic topics connect those mechanisms to observed symptoms, so a pause is investigated at the stage that actually ran short of data or processing capacity.
From server to player
Server-to-player delivery selects a media source and a representation compatible with the requested playback path.Conversion pipelines
Media conversion connects source decoding, optional processing and output encoding into a working representation.Streaming delivery
Streaming delivery connects media representations, transport requests and player buffers across a playback timeline.Players and playback environments
Playback environments determine which media interfaces, device resources and delivery routes an application can use.Casting and remote playback
Casting and remote playback separate control, media delivery and presentation across participating devices.Understanding playback behavior
Playback behavior links visible symptoms to observations of the stages involved in a media session.
