Overview: Casting and remote playback
Casting and remote playback separate control, media delivery and presentation across participating devices.
The device that selects a film need not be the device that decodes or displays it. Casting, mirroring and remote control arrange those responsibilities differently. The protocol pages and connectivity topic identify the controller, receiver and server relationships needed to understand where an operation failed.
Casting and screen mirroring
Casting and screen mirroring send presentation to another device through different media paths, with receiver playback or sender-screen transmission changing resource and processing requirements.Google Cast
Google Cast connects a sender application to a receiver application that manages the selected media presentation and its resource-loading path.AirPlay
AirPlay provides supported media-output and screen-mirroring routes whose sender, application and receiver choices determine how the presentation reaches another screen or audio device.DLNA playback
DLNA playback uses discovery, media descriptions and device-specific compatibility information to connect a source with a receiver.Playback remote control
Playback remote control sends commands to a selected playback session while reported state and actual media presentation establish what the receiving player did.Controller and receiver connectivity
Remote playback depends on separate discovery, control and media-retrieval paths whose reachability and access contexts can succeed or fail independently.
