AirPlay media presentation and screen mirroring

AirPlay provides supported media-output and screen-mirroring routes whose sender, application and receiver choices determine how the presentation reaches another screen or audio device.

AirPlay can present supported media on another device and can also mirror a sender's screen. Those are different modes: choosing a receiver for video within an app is not necessarily the same operation as choosing Screen Mirroring.

The app, sender platform and receiver determine which route is available and how that presentation behaves.

    Identify the selected mode

    User-visible arrangement Presentation being requested
App-based video output The app's supported video presentation on a selected receiver
Audio-output selection Audio through a supported remote output
Screen Mirroring A representation of the sender's displayed screen

Apple documents app-based video streaming and screen mirroring separately. It also states that some video apps might not support AirPlay.

This means that operating-system support for AirPlay does not by itself establish support in a particular Emby app or media path. The specific app/version and available output option supply that evidence.

A matched video can still produce different output

Imagine an original comparison using the same source and subtitle selection.

In screen mirroring, the phone first presents the video and subtitle on its displayed surface. The mirrored result can therefore contain that subtitle as part of the screen image.

In an app-based media-output path, the app and receiver integration determine how video, audio and subtitle presentation are supplied. Seeing a subtitle on the phone before the switch does not establish that a separate subtitle track was delivered to the receiver.

Picture dimensions can differ for the same reason. A mirrored screen includes the sender's composition and scaling, while another media-output route can prepare the programme using its own presentation path.

The casting and mirroring comparison develops those media-route consequences.

Receiver selection is one stage of connectivity

Apple's documented consumer workflow for iPhone/iPad video streaming and mirroring uses the sender and compatible receiver on the same Wi-Fi network. This describes that workflow rather than every possible managed or peer-to-peer deployment.

A receiver appearing in the output list establishes availability for selection under the current environment. Subsequent activation, media presentation and ongoing sender behavior are additional observations.

If video fails after selection, preserve the mode that was chosen, the application, source and tracks, and whether any picture or audio actually started. That context distinguishes a missing app route from a failed session on an offered route.

Controller behavior and media behavior need separate observations

A pause command, a sender screen change and an output-route change can affect the active session differently. A mirroring session continues to depend on its screen source; an app-based media session follows its supported output integration.
