    Overview: Text and localization

Text and localization rules connect character representation, language context and display or sorting choices.

A translated title and a sort title can legitimately differ from the original display name. Language tags identify context, while Unicode describes the stored characters. These pages distinguish those roles so a library can preserve the intended text and still organize it appropriately for the viewer.

    • Unicode metadata
Unicode metadata represents text through defined characters and encodings, while normalization, search keys and locale ordering are separate transformations.

    • Language tags
A language tag identifies a linguistic presentation with applicable language, script, region and extension information, while selection and fallback remain separate policies.

    • Localized titles
Localized titles provide language- or region-associated labels for one work, independently of its original title and scoped catalogue identity.

    • Sort titles
A sort title is a presentation-order key that can differ from the displayed title, with locale, numeric and tie-breaking policies determining the resulting sequence.
