    Overview: Display technologies

Display technologies produce light and visible images through different panel or projection mechanisms.

LCD systems use a light source and modulation arrangement; OLED pixels and projectors have other light-production relationships. Those mechanisms influence the context for contrast, motion and viewing conditions. The individual pages explain the technology before specific model performance is compared.

    • LCD and LED-backlit displays
An LED-backlit LCD forms pictures by modulating a separate backlight through a liquid-crystal pixel structure.

    • OLED displays
An OLED display produces light through independently driven organic emissive elements, with picture behaviour determined by its pixel arrangement, drive and brightness controls.

    • Projectors
A projector forms a picture through an imaging engine and optics onto a viewing surface whose size, reflectance and ambient illumination affect the visible result.
