Emby No Longer Working On Outside My Home Network (June, 2021)

Hello, I hope I posted this in the right section, if not please feel free to move this topic to the right section of the forum.

After months of being able to connect to my Emby server remotely, I am unable to connect to it again. This started about 2 or 3 weeks ago when Emby also started to no longer stream on my Firestick anymore.

I contacted my internet provider they told me the ports are still open (8096).

I use Avast Anti-Virus and my Firewall settings is still on "private network" but are set to allow Emby.

Can anyone address this issue? Thanks!

Hi, You don't need the UDP ports for Emby just TCP in the port forwarding.  Make sure the Server IPv4 is pointing to your local Emby Server.

As a test I would turn off any AV or malware program just to see if things start working which helps to identify the problem.

Make sure you also don't have any VPN service running on your server or router as that will change your routing.

Let us know if this helps or if you still have any issues.

Did this happen after updating the server from 4.5.4 to 4.6.2.0 ?

yes, whatever update from 3 weeks ago that was when I was no longer able to connect remotely, and no longer able to stream live tv from Emby on my Firestick (although I can still record, which is odd).

I changed it to both TCP & UDP, so far it's been a few minutes but my phone recognizes it remotely. So thanks for the update on that.

I'm the same update from 4.5.4 to 4.6.2.0 broke my remote connection. Server worked fine for me on 4.5.4 with UPnP enabled on my router and no port forwarding. Version 4.6.2.0 update I now have to configure port forwarding on my router for remote access.

@Emby  how can this be?  Was something changed with remote connections in 4.6.x?

UPnP isn't a great protocol and has issues.

Emby tries to make port forwarding as easy as possible so it supports UPnP but some routers don't like to see a change once a port is forwarded and become "dumb".

Then at that point the best you can do is remove the entry and let Emby recreate the new port forward or just turn off UPnP updating in Emby itself (network menu) and configure the port forwarding yourself.

If you still have a problem feel free to send me a PM and I can do a remote session with you and help you solve this pretty quickly.

But if you want to check a few things try reading and running through the things in this article and pay attention to the things at the bottom to check:

so far yes this has helped. I have not been on here in awhile and did not know there was a reply....but I am able to connect remotely again. It seems setting the modem to both UDP and TCP setting helped fix the issue.

You shouldn't need UDP open but the fact you changed it got the TCP part of it open so you should be fine.

Thanks for the status update and we're glad you got it working!

Yes all is working I have both UPnP and port forwarding rules configured on the router. Prior to the updates UPnP worked perfectly for me with no port forwarding rules configured on the router.
