Metadata for Combined Episode Numbers

I have a number of episodes in my TV library that have Parts 1+2 combined in a single file, where TVDB lists them as separate episodes (for example, the pilot of Knight Rider, "Knight of the Phoenix", came as a single 2-hour episode in the Season 1 box set).  I've always just named this episode s01e01 and removed the "Part 1" designation from the title via the metadata editor, but it bothers me because it looks like episode 2 is missing.

Recently I learned that Emby can handle combined episodes when named like s01e01e02, so I tried this with a new series and it worked great, displaying the episode number as "1-2" (my only complaint is that the titles are combined with a comma, but since a lot of episode titles contain commas it's not always clear where one title ends and another begins - I suggest a semicolon instead).  Anyway, I had a look at the metadata editor for that episode and even though it displays as episode 1-2, the editor lists this as episode 1.

Going back to Knight Rider, I tried to set the episode number for that combined episode as 1-2, but the editor complained that only a single number was allowed in this field.  So that raises the question, is there a way to use the metadata editor, or something else, to manually indicate that an episode is a combined episode and change the displayed episode number appropriately?  I know I can just rename the file and rescan my library, but I would still have to edit the metadata (since I want the episode title to display as "Knight of the Phoenix" not "Knight of the Phoenix (1), Knight of the Phoenix (2)"), so editing this directly would be faster than renaming, rescanning, and editing again.  Plus, I'm just curious and I'd like to know how this works.  Thanks!

Hi, the episode number field is the starting episode number. There is a dedicated field for the ending episode number, although it might not actually be in the metadata editor at this point.

Luke, thank you for the information, it's good to know how these fields work.  I'm only seeing the starting field in the metadata editor, so sounds like renaming the files is the only option right now.

The episode title is irrelevant in filename.  Emby uses the SxxExx-xx identifier to get the Titles from Provider.  In your case you would just Edit the Title in Emby and possibly scroll to the bottom of the Edit Metadata screen and Lock Name.  Only the metadata (nfo) file show the EpisodeNumberEnd node.  But Emby know both exist as shown in the UI.

Know If you use Kodi that is a different story as they are doing something different and Emby just hasn't got there yet.

It's the best option anyway in case you ever refresh metadata, you don't want to end up unintentionally erasing those edits.

I have renamed several files for the combined episodes,  but now Emby shows one of each of the episodes is missing. How do I sort that out? Seeing this across 3 different seasons of 1 show so it's getting annoying trying to verify my library and missing episodes. Emby seems to recognize the combined episodes, but won't remove the "fake" missing episode entry. I've re-scanned each season a dozen times now, replaced metadata, searched for missing meta data, moved the files out of the library/scanned/moved back in/scanned again. When I moved the 4 files out of the library and scanned, it showed episode 1 as missing, but there was no entry for episode 2 (which is 1-2 based on the file). With no data left for a combined file it should have listed both 1 and 2 as missing.

Can you post the nfo for that episode.

If everything is correct in the nfo and a Full Scan does not resolve the issue then there is a database quirk not removing the virtual item.

You could try everything related to this episode from the folder and do a full scan to clear the item from the database then readd the item and do a full scan to see if it makes a difference.

For combined episodes I use the syntax "s03e01-e02", and it works fine.  Although the syntax you've used is supposed to be supported, it might be worth changing it as an experiment in case it is simply a bug in the code which is failing to recognise it correctly.

Here's the nfo. I know I even deleted the previous nfo file and let Emby re-create it.

Though I just checked Emby again for that season, and now it's magically fixed. Guess it just takes more than a few minutes to update. I still have a couple other seasons, so I'll try the same things and just wait longer I guess.
