KristianT 0 Posted December 26, 2020 Posted December 26, 2020 Hi. I have searched for the answer to this question, but only found some very old ones where the answer was to try the same in a new release. This was a lot of releases ago. (Back in 2019 I think) When watch something on emby the subtitles is working fine. But if I chose to pause and exit the current stream only to resume at a later time with the "resume from mm:ss" feature the subtitles are not working. They simply does not show. This happens in the chrome web browser, in the windows Emby Theater app and in the android app. My emby server runs on freenas and the emby version is 4.5.4.0 Does anyone know what can cause this? How it can be fixed? Or a workaround that can make the subtitles show up on resumes? If anyone needs more information about settings or anything required to answer or look into this, please ask and I'll try to supply what I can. KristianT
speechles 2055 Posted December 26, 2020 Posted December 26, 2020 (edited) What type of subtitles are these and what kind of container is the media? For example.. is this MP4 with internal ASS/SSA subtitles that will not play? Or is it MKV with external SRT? Knowing the answer to those questions will help us understand why this happens. You can also provide us any ffmpeg logs created, or server logs, during that time which can also provide clues to why this is happening. Edited December 26, 2020 by speechles
KristianT 0 Posted December 26, 2020 Author Posted December 26, 2020 Thanks for a very speedy reply Speechles! I am not that versed in the world of subtitles and video containers. The latest example is an MKV video file where emby displays the subtitles as (English SUBRIP). I will make a note whenever I notice this behavior and see if I can find any common type of file or subtitles when this problem occurs and try to update this thread. Attached is the ffmpeg logs created just now where the problem occured. Any clues in there? ffmpeg-transcode-1bb815dc-5e5a-46ba-92de-cc57b62745b0_1.txt
speechles 2055 Posted December 26, 2020 Posted December 26, 2020 Stream #0:2 -> #1:0 (subrip (srt) -> webvtt (native)) It is something we need to look into. The subtitles are being delivered. But for some reason they are not making it onto the screen for you. Let us see what can be done here. @Luke
KristianT 0 Posted December 26, 2020 Author Posted December 26, 2020 Great! Thank you! If I understand you correctly, this has to do with the emby server? And not any configuration or settings on the client side? The fix must come from the emby server side? Should there be anything you need from me it the search for a solution. Just let me know. As mentioned, I can make a note of the times when I see the error reoccur, and can try to upload new ffmpeg logs if they help.
KristianT 0 Posted December 27, 2020 Author Posted December 27, 2020 I believe I installed it using the plugin feature in freenas.
Luke 42083 Posted December 31, 2020 Posted December 31, 2020 @MRobi what install method do you use on FreeNAS?
KristianT 0 Posted December 31, 2020 Author Posted December 31, 2020 The issue appeared again today. The logfile is attached. ffmpeg-transcode-385f3646-d164-419b-9735-a4c9663ddc2b_1.txt

Manually created the jail and then essentially the instructions at https://emby.media/freebsd-server.html for the beta, but instead of the beta file I'd use the latest stable file.
Luke 42083 Posted January 3, 2021 Posted January 3, 2021 @KristianT can you do that to install our latest version?
KristianT 0 Posted January 3, 2021 Author Posted January 3, 2021 @Luke If I understand you correctly you want me to install a new instance of emby in a new jail manually? If so, do you have any good and clear instructions for how to migrate all the data from the existing installation to the new installation? Including the ssl certificate. I don't want to lose the data and settings for the users. Also that feels a bit counter intuitive since the freenas server has the option to install emby directly from the gui. Shouldn't that work fine? If it does not, would it be better to fix that installation? I used the gui in the picture here when i installed it. Are you saying thats the wrong approach. Should emby not be installed using the plugins feature in the image:

Should emby not be installed using the plugins feature in the image: You should be able to install manually in your existing jail and it won't overide any of your settings. Packages are essentially scripts that run through the same process but programmed by somebody else. A good practice in FreeNAS is to keep the config settings outside of the jails and then mount the config directory to the right location inside the jail (just as you would mount your media storage). I had a dataset I named "apps" that had config folders for every jail running on my server. This way if a jail goes down for any reason, you can re-create the jail, map your config folder, and you're back up and running within minutes with no loss. In Emby's case it doesn't even need to re-scan the library. As for your question re: the FreeNAS GUI, that is not maintained by Emby. Those are typically maintained by the FreeNAS team in the case of iXsystems plugins, or by a community member in the case of community plugins. You can't always rely on the person maintaining the plugin to be following the Emby releases and updating it right away, in fact they're often behind. Manually installing from Emby's github allows you to take control of your own updates without relying on anybody else.

KristianT 0 Posted January 4, 2021 Author Posted January 4, 2021 @Luke @MRobi I have reinstalled the emby server with instructions from here: https://emby.media/freebsd-server.html However, I did not find the correct filename for the current release so in ended up installing the beta version. Also I did not manage to restart the emby server after install, so I restarted the jail from the freenas gui instead. I have attached the commands and outputs from my reinstall in the post here. Emby came back up and running with all settings intact. Version 4.6.0.10 beta The problem with the subtitles still exists. Log file attached. I also noticed the subtitles disappears if one skip ahead in the movie. Also, could you tell me the correct link to the current release version so i can install the release instead of running the beta? emby_reinstall.txt ffmpeg-transcode-b9ea2aa7-1ba8-4f86-b4e8-432e0f0d7ebe_1.txt

Head here: https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Emby.Releases/releases/ The latest beta will always be on top. You'll see it tagged in red as "Pre-Release". If you scroll down you'll see the latest stable, tagged in green as "Latest Release". As of right now that is 4.5.4.0. In the list of files you'll see 2 for FreeBSD. Either FreeBSD 11 or 12, it will depend on which version of FreeNAS you are running. Based on the fact you're seeing an Emby package in the ixSystems plugins, I'm going to assume you're on 11. So based on that, this would be your latest stable https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Emby.Releases/releases/download/4.5.4.0/emby-server-freebsd11_4.5.4.0_amd64.txz Now since you're on 4.6 in the beta stream, it's not usually recommend to go backwards to stable. You'll see for the most part, the beta releases are 98% stable anyways and you'll get early access to new features
