Thoughts on these? I've had good luck with Seagate and these are currently cheaper than Western Digital. Anybody know what drive is inside?

I guess this one is even less on Amazon right now. Thing is I have a $10 gift certificate from Best Buy because they quit supporting the Insignia smart plug and I had one.

Maybe I can get Best Buy to price match and slap down the GC..

I've had nothing but problems with seagate.  I run WD Reds now for years w/o problem.  Google hard drive shucking if you want some insane deals.

Not sure why my thread got tagged as Closed. I don't remember doing it but cannot change it.

Did you grab an easystore/mybook? I just shucked my fourth a few weeks ago. Great drives, the 8's get down to $129 at best buy sometimes.

I'll wait. The model number is off by a letter so it'd be hit or (most likely) miss for a price match to amazon.

Larger Seagate HDDs tend to use SMR tech. Personally I avoid those and stick to CMR/PMR based drives.

Care to elaborate?

Much info on Google.

SMR = shingled magnetic recording

CMR/PMR = conventional/perpendicular magnetic recording

There's a performance penalty and internal overhead in SMR drives for non-sequential update workloads. More work and sector relocation leads to more wear. Not worth the lower price IMO.

I'll stick with WD. Not worth it for $10!

exactly this.  $130 for 8TB WD Red is unbeatable.

Depend on the Seagate drive

shingled magnetic recording (SMR) was only in some USB and Drives that lable as Archive HDD there meant for long team storage only as in write once.

two-dimensional magnetic recording (TDMR) is found in the Barracudas and Ironwolves and other line under 12TB

heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) 12TB and higher

The WD external drives have reds in them, well they are no longer reds because of all the shucking of externals, but it is largely understood that they are the same drive just relabeled to easily be identified as coming from an external.

What about Elements? Basically $110 after 15% cash back..

As far as I know the drives are the same as the easystores. The easystore is a best buy exclusive, and the element is what everyone else sells. Looks like a sweet deal.

Ordered the Elements.. basically $110 plus tax!

I'll report back on the contents.

I can still use the $10 Bestbuy GC for something else.

This is true (TDMR,HAMR) for the pro and enterprise models. But their higher capacity desktop and external models that run at lower RPMs, including Barracuda, have been using SMR. It's getting harder to find Seagate docs with this info and they've shifted to stating TGMR as the recording tech. If you find older datasheets for the same models they do include mention of SMR.

Unless there a reason for high speed 7200rpm drive which mainly games loading there really need even a stock 5400rpm drive can easy push 16 HD steam of 8mb/sec at ocen.

It not hard if no where to look see page 6

As long time seagate user all way to 80's all one has to do call them and ask and I usually run them for 5 years 24/7 then update them make old one's as backup storage drive in fact I have upgrade to 8TB as I still got a few more to go on emby server
