Player for my Sony TV X940E

I'm testing out Emby to see how it works for me.  I have the server all setup and it has imported all my media.  I installed the AndoridTV app on my Sony X940E 4K TV, it also has a 7.1 dolby atmos AV system hooked up via hdmi for audio passthrough.

 

My hope is that I can get the Emby app to direct play the media over the LAN to my TV.  Today Plex transcodes Atmos audio because it can't figure out it is supported with passthrough.

 

When I started playing Venom 4k truehd 7.1 I noticed that it is transcoding.  When I went to look at the stats it says display mode 1080/60 and is transcoding to 1080P.

 

I didn't see any settings in the app that related to resolution, just audio passthrough.  I also didn't see dolby atmos passthrough.

 

Any suggestions on how to get it to work for my TV?  Is it possible?

I installed it on my Nvidia Shield that connects to my TV and passes through Audio to the same system.

 

Everything works fine on the Shield.  2160P, all sound formats work.

 

So how does one find out why the same TV only plays in 1080P and dd5.1 is the only sound that plays natvely?   I assume Emby isn't understanding the capabilities of the TV.  Is there a setting somewhere for that I can change?

 

I had to remove my internet bandwidth limit of 15Mbps even though the TV is on the same LAN as the Emby server.  That helped, but then I had to set the bandwidth speed on the TV player from Auto to 100Mbps to get it to finally play direct stream video.  If I didn't do that one of my videos with has a 76Mbps stream wouldn't play on the TV.

What type of Atmos track is being played?

Your TV only supports Atmos via lossy DD+ / EAC3 and will not support TrueHD Atmos over ARC.

You're TV doesn't support E-ARC, so it won't make any difference.

You will only get Atmos via ARC if the track is encoded in E-AC3/Dolby Digital Plus.

 

In regards to 1080P, all apps on Sony Android TV report that they are playing back at 1080P/60hz. The actual video being played will be at 4K though.

Sony TVs don't match frame rate via android apps, but if you use Motion Flow settings True Cinema / Film Mode (Cinemotion) High, that will do a reverse 3:2 pulldown and display 24hz content correctly.

Odd I wonder why Plex on Shield says direct play for Dolby Atmos and TrueHD.  The Shield is just connected to the TV and uses the same sound bar.

 

EDIT: the Shield is connected to HDMI 1, the HT-ST5000 sound bar supports all audio formats via HDMI, so that is why the Shield works.

The main audio track / Atmos track is encoded in TrueHD.  The TV will never be able to directly output this via ARC.

The reason why it works on the shield is that it is plugeed directly into the soundbar so is not using ARC and is bitstreaming it to the soundbar directly.

I have been able to test video with DD , TrueHD, Atmos Dolby TrueHD, DTS DTS-ES 6.1.  They all work/don't work as the sheet says except DTS 7.1.  DTS 7.1 the sound is slow, garbled and often completely missing.  It is not trying to transcode.

 

 

For DTS 7.1 I enabled debug logging on the server and played Venom, this is the piece in the log between starting/stopping the video.  The sound was not good: Debug.rtf

 

Hopefully this can help with DTS 7.1

Hi.  As barong stated - your soundbar may support those formats but your TV does not so they will not pass and the app will transcode to a format that is supported.  Plex is transcoding too they are just doing it in a different way/place.

 

Sony TVs have always had trouble with DTS from Android apps too which is actually why those options exist in the app.  If this is a new TV then 5.1 DTS should work but 7.1 may have to be downmixed.

 

As you found, the Shield has no problem with any of this.

I tried the same movie in Plex on the TV and it struggles the same way with the 7.1 audio.

 

bummer I was hoping to get something better with Emby than what I get with Plex. 

 

Support help is definitely better with Emby.
